NEIL ARDLEY ~ MIKE TAYLOR REMEMBERED
DUSK FIRE 103 (Barcode: 5065001032011) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2007

The short and tragic life of pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist, an eccentric genius fallen victim to mental illness / drug abuse, which proved self-destructive and led to his death at the age of 29, is surely worthy a script adaptation for a Martin ScorseseFind albums by this artist movie. Sometimes referred to as “the Syd BarrettFind albums by this artist of British Jazz”, Taylor had close ties with a relatively small group of musicians, like Graham BondFind albums by this artist and the members of his Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist, which included Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist – soon to be founders of CreamFind albums by this artist. Many people will be surprised to learn that three songs co-written by Ginger and Mike appear on Cream’s Wheels Of FireFind albums with this title album (“Pressed Rat And Warthog”, “Those Were The Days” and “Passing The Time”). Another one of his superb songs – “Jumping Off The Sun” – was recorded by ColosseumFind albums by this artist and appears on several of their albums.

Although known intimately by very few people at the time, the legend lives on and periodically the flame of interest is rekindled among the modern British Jazz fans, like in the case of reissue of his only two existing recordings: PendulumFind albums with this title and TrioFind albums with this title. Even fewer people are aware of the spectacular tribute album recorded by Taylor’s musician friends three years after his death. Recorded under the musical direction of another British Jazz legendary figure, composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, who discovered Taylor’s genius immediately and scored some of his compositions for the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist when Taylor was still alive. Unfortunately the concert, which was to feature NJO and Mike’s trio never materialized, since Taylor (already very ill at the time) simply missed the gig. Nevertheless Ardley continued to use Taylor’s music as part of the regular NJO repertoire and suggested to Denis PrestonFind albums by this artist, owner of the legendary Lansdowne Studios in London, where most of the pivotal modern British Jazz was recorded, to produce a tribute album to Mike Taylor’s musical genius. Preston, who recorded the two Taylor albums, needed no persuasion and funded the complex and costly project with no hesitation, considering it a most appropriate gesture.

Ardley assembled a group of 20 musicians to record this project, sharing the scoring of the music for a large ensemble with others, who were close to Taylor and new him well, like Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and Dave GellyFind albums by this artist. One of the tracks is based on a previously unreleased Taylor quartet recording, with the ensemble overdubbed on top of the original recording, which makes Taylor’s participation in this project almost “in person” as well as “in spirit”. The list of the participating musicians reads like the who’s who of modern British Jazz and includes among others: Ian CarrFind albums by this artist and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and David HorlerFind albums by this artist on trombone, Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist and Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist on saxophone, Peter LemerFind albums by this artist and Alan BranscombeFind albums by this artist on piano, Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist on bass, Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist on drums and of course the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist on vocals. I can’t think of a more appropriate tribute than this one, full of love, dedication and music genius by all the people involved.

Considering the fact that this album combines the genius of Taylor’s Jazz composition with the genius of Ardley’s Jazz scoring / arranging, we get (in mathematical terms) a genius squared result – a rare event indeed. Recommending this album would be somewhat similar to recommending someone to read some Joyce or see a van Gogh – completely superfluous. I’m sure you get the drift by now!

BAKER GURVITZ ARMY ~ ELYSIAN ENCOUNTER
ESOTERIC 2248 (Barcode: 5013929734821) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2011

This is the 2nd album by the British supergroup Baker Gurvitz ArmyFind albums by this artist, which was created when legendary drummer Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist joined forces with brothers Adrian GurvitzFind albums by this artist (guitar) and Paul GurvitzFind albums by this artist (bass), known to British proto-Prog fans as the founders of the legendary band GunFind albums by this artist. The trio was joined by excellent keyboardist Peter LemerFind albums by this artist (with extensive Jazz background) and extraordinary vocalist Steve ParsonsFind albums by this artist (ex-SharksFind albums by this artist aka Mr. Snips). These five formidable musicians had enough talent between them to blow any band off the stage, which is clearly evident from what´s enclosed here. Both Baker´s drumming and Adrian´s guitar playing is some of the best ever heard on record. This music simply refuses to fade out and remains to be vibrant and exciting. Play it loud!

PETER LEMER QUINTET ~ SON OF LOCAL COLOUR
ESP 5031 (Barcode: 825481503129) ~ UK ~ Avant-Garde Jazz

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2019

This is an album by British Jazz pianist / composer Peter LemerFind albums by this artist and his quintet, which features saxophonists John SurmanFind albums by this artist and Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, bassist Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist – all iconic figures of the British Jazz scene. The album presents eight tracks, five by Lemer, one by Surman, one by Carla BleyFind albums by this artist and finally one by John Coltrane. The album was recorded live at the Pizza Express in London, on February 20th, 2018.

But the story behind this album goes back fifty years into the past, when the almost identical lineup of the quintet (with George KhanFind albums by this artist in place of Skidmore) released the album “Local ColourFind albums with this title”, which was recorded a couple of years earlier, on the pioneering independent record label ESPFind albums on this label Disk, founded in 1963 and run by a Jewish NY lawyer and Avant-Garde Music protagonist Bernard StollmanFind albums by this artist, and which yours truly proudly stored in his collection ever since.

That album was the first modern / Avant-Garde British Jazz album to be released in the US, together with several other modern European Jazz albums, including even recordings originating from behind the Iron Curtain. At that time most Americans were completely unaware of the existence of modern Jazz outside of the US. It was also the first recording, which features Surman. Five of the compositions on that album are also present on the album, approached in a completely new and different way.

Despite the fact that the musicians are five decades older this time, they seem not to have lost any of the vigor and passion, and with the added experience of a lifetime the music obviously gained an unprecedented level of depth and finesse. The new album also offers a closure of sorts, as it was the last recording by Hiseman, before his tragic death just four months after this album was recorded.

Overall, this is a fine Avant-Garde Jazz album, beautifully executed by these superb players, which will certainly be a cherished addition to every serious British Jazz collection, and the unusual circumstances surrounding it add to its historic value, serving as a half-Century time bridge between the early days of modern British Jazz and now. Brilliant stuff!

All of it is excellent, which of course comes as no surprise after his contributions in bands like Matching MoleFind albums by this artist, Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist and National HealthFind albums by this artist. PHIL MILLER / IN CAHOOTS ~ LIVE IN JAPAN
CRESCENT 02 (Barcode: 5020522080224) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1991 Released: 1993

Guitarist / composer Phil MillerFind albums by this artist and his In CahootsFind albums by this artist ensemble have been a consistently excellent source of great music for many years. This particular lineup is a sextet and includes: Miller – guitar, Elton DeanFind albums by this artist – sax, Jim DvorakFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Peter LemerFind albums by this artist – keyboards, Fred BakerFind albums by this artist – bass and Pip PyleFind albums by this artist – drums. Recorded live during a Japanese tour, this album presents the group performing the wonderful Miller’s compositions in an extended form, with many outstanding solos by all the players. Much of the set is drawn from Phil´s solo album Digging InFind albums with this title and it is interesting to compare the carefully controlled studio versions with these loose, fiery, live ones. Miller always talks about himself first as a composer and only then as a guitarist, and rightly so since although he is an excellent player, he has very few equals as a song-weaver. Excellent stuff!

PHIL MILLER / IN CAHOOTS ~ OUT OF THE BLUE
CRESCENT 05 (Barcode: 604388476626) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 2000 Released: 2000

Guitarist / composer Phil MillerFind albums by this artist and his In CahootsFind albums by this artist ensemble have been a consistently excellent source of great music for many years. This album is very special in their discography, as Phil wrote the music for this album during the period when his brother, pianist Steve MillerFind albums by this artist became ill with the cancer which eventually killed him in December of 1998. Phil had originally hoped that Steve would play on the recording but, as his illness progressed, that ceased to be a possibility. In a way this album is a tribute to Steve and is dedicated to his memory. This is a real return to roots for Phil, harking back to earlier days when he, Steve and Pip played together in DeliveryFind albums by this artist, a band which leaned heavily on the blues for its starting point and it coincides with CuneiformFind albums on this label Records re-release of the Delivery album Fools MeetingFind albums with this title. It represents something of a departure for Phil, being his first venture into the blues for 30 years. The writing is simpler and there is more of a groove in the rhythm section. The usual In Cahoots sextet line up of Phil Miller - guitar and guitar synthesizer, Fred BakerFind albums by this artist - fretless bass guitar, Elton DeanFind albums by this artist - alto sax and saxello, Peter LemerFind albums by this artist - keyboards, Jim DvorakFind albums by this artist - trumpet and Pip PyleFind albums by this artist - drums is augmented by Doug BoyleFind albums by this artist on guitar. Excellent music from start to finish, which of course is not surprising for a band that keeps delivering one great album after another.

This is the 2nd album by the band GongFind albums by this artist released on the AristaFind albums on this label label, which has musically almost nothing to do with the original band of the same name, after it was turned into a Jazz-Rock outfit by the then leader of the band, the French drummer Pierre MoerlenFind albums by this artist. This album features such excellent players as keyboardist Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, bassist Hansford RoweFind albums by this artist and many others. RAY RUSSELL QUARTET ~ THE COMPLETE SPONTANEOUS EVENT
JAZZ IN BRITAIN 74 (Barcode: 5060774190814) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 - 1969 Released: 2024

This is a live archival album by British Jazz guitarist / composer / bandleader Ray RussellFind albums by this artist. It collects five live BBC radio broadcasts recorded by Russell and his quartet between 1967 and 1969, with pianists Roy FryFind albums by this artist or Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, bassists Dave HollandFind albums by this artist or Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Alan RushtonFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents twenty tracks, seventeen of which are original compositions by Russell, one is by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, one by Charles LloydFind albums by this artist and one is a standard. The sound quality of the recordings is brilliant, and hard to believe these recordings were done almost sixty years ago. A few of these tracks were released on an LP in 2000, the early days of the fabulous Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, and now the complete material is available, for which all British Jazz fans are eternally grateful.

Russell is undoubtedly one of the great silent heroes of the British Jazz scene, rarely in the limelight but continuously active behind the scenes, an author of countless compositions and extensive work as composer of soundtracks for films and TV, a sought after session player with myriad of albums he plays on, but sadly with rather limited recorded legacy as a leader. Most of his albums as a leader originate from the late 1960s and early 1970s, including those by the brilliant Brass Rock ensemble Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, which he led. Therefore, this excellent album is even more important to portray his contributions.

The music on this album is stylistically quite “well behaved”, as far as the melodic compositions are concerned, strongly rooted in the Jazz tradition, before Russell moved into the more Fusion oriented pathway. His guitar work is absolutely brilliant, displaying his total control of the instrument and stunning technique, continuity and flow. These were pivotal times for the new modern British Jazz scene, where the essence of the new British feel, elegance, sophistication and unique esthetics were forged, which this album portrays splendidly. In retrospect there were very few guitar players in UK at the time, of such class and proficiency.

Overall, this is another “bull’s eye” release by Jazz In Britain, which just keeps the juices of the British Jazz history fans flowing, by unearthing such marvelous treasures from the past. Meticulously researched, offering best possible sound quality and most importantly digging deep into the archives, spearing no efforts to bring us the music, this is a true labor of love. Personally this is one of the strongest releases on the label, although everything they release is worth having. Thank you!

BARBARA THOMPSON ~ FIRST LIGHT
JAZZ IN BRITAIN 54 (Barcode: 5060774190524) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 - 1972 Released: 2023

This is an album collecting three archival live recordings / radio broadcasts by the late British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, which present her in various settings with the crème de la crème of the British Jazz musicians active in the early 1970s. As a result, it is a companion album to the tremendous 14CD Box Set “Live At The BBCFind albums with this title” by Barbara Thompson, released in 2020 by RepertoireFind albums on this label Records, offering material uncovered after the Box Set was released. This album, released by the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, is a completely non-commercial release, with all profits from the album going to the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, a moving gesture by all the people involved, including Barbara’s and Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist’s daughter Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist and Jazz In Britain founder John ThurlowFind albums by this artist. We all still mourn Barbara’s and Jon’s untimely departures of course.

The first two tracks present the Group EFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) vocalist Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist, pianist Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, bassist Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist and drummer Laurie AllanFind albums by this artist. The music is Avant-Garde Jazz, with superb vocal parts by Lemer, who sadly is often forgotten, but was one of the most interesting Jazz vocalist of the period.

The next three tracks present a suite for a Big Band, called “The Awakening”, co-composed by Barbara and Jon. The band features a dreamy lineup of eleven instrumentalists and a vocalist – no other than my beloved Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist – which reads like a Who’s Who of the modern British Jazz and is conducted by Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist. The players are: trumpeters Ian HamerFind albums by this artist, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Don RendellFind albums by this artist and Barbara Thompson, cellist Charles TunnellFind albums by this artist, pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist, bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon Hiseman. The music is absolutely brilliant and very typical of the Big Band recordings recorded at the time by Neil Ardley, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist and others. The vocal parts by Winstone are, not surprisingly, my favorite jewels, but the entire suite is simply divine and the fact it was discovered and now released is no less than sensational.

The last five tracks are by Barbara’s group JubiabaFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) trumpeters George ChisholmFind albums by this artist and Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, Wadsworth, Le Sage, Peter Lemer, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, drummer Martin DrewFind albums by this artist and percussionist Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. It presents the early version of the band, which was essentially dedicated to combining Jazz with World Music influences, mostly Latin. As far as I am aware, this is the earliest recordings by Jubiaba captured on tape.

Overall, this is an absolute jewel from start to finish and an absolute must to all British Jazz enthusiasts, and in retrospect one of the most surprising and important releases by the Jazz In Britain label so far. The Big Band piece alone is a beacon symbolizing the birth of the modern British Jazz, with everything it stands for: ingenuity, originality, groundbreaking musical thinking and enormous talent. Hats off to everybody involved!

BARBARA THOMPSON`S PARAPHERNALIA ~ LIVE IN CONCERT (80TH BIRTHDAY EDITION)
REPERTOIRE 1473 (Barcode: 4009910147320) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2024

This is a reissue / remaster of a live album by British Jazz saxophonist / flautist / bandleader Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and her band ParaphernaliaFind albums by this artist, which included keyboardist Colin DudmanFind albums by this artist, bassist Dill KatzFind albums by this artist and drummer (and Barbara’s husband) Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, six of which are original compositions by Thompson, one is by Dudman and one is by British keyboardist / composer Peter LemerFind albums by this artist. The album was originally released as a double LP and this is the first time it is released on CD. To commemorate Barbara’s 80th Birthday, this edition was expanded to include a bonus CD, called “The Flute Collection”, which presents a collection of ten tracks, which feature Barbara’s flute performances, recorded with various ensembles in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The album was beautifully and lovingly put together, including the extensive booklet, by Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist, Barbara’s and Jon’s daughter, and includes numerous photographs, press clippings and other memorabilia, to commemorate Barbara’s passing in 2022, which was deeply mourned by her family and friends.

Paraphernalia was Barbara’s vehicle to present her wide range of compositions, which amalgamated many diverse influences, from Classical Music, World Music and of course Jazz in all its splendor of sub-genres. She was a remarkable instrumentalist, with a superb feel and outstanding improvisational abilities. She was an integral part of the British Jazz scene since the 1960s and her numerous recordings as a leader and sidewoman are a beacon of excellency and talent. She is also a great heroine as far as her personal fight with the Parkinson’s disease, which sadly overshadowed her life during the last period of her life.

Overall, this is a great opportunity to re-visit this live album, which reflects the spirit of one of the best British bands active at the time, and enjoy the superb performances by Barbara, Colin, Dill and John, which of course I had the immense pleasure to listen to in person many a time. I am sure many Paraphernalia fans will enjoy listening to this album again and now with the bonus album as a cherry on top, this is truly irresistible. Thanks to Ana and everybody else involved in this project for making this music available again!
