This long overdue reissue was prompted by the publication of Beckett’s biography “The Many Faces of Harry Beckett” by John ThurlowFind albums by this artist, who also wrote the new liner notes, which are featured on the album’s artwork, in addition to the original liner notes by John FordhamFind albums by this artist. The album, which was Beckett’s fourth release as a leader, was released by the small independent CadillacFind albums on this label Records label established by John JackFind albums by this artist in 1973, and which subsequently released several iconic British Jazz recordings, some of which are still waiting for a reissue.

The music on this album is quite different from Beckett’s earlier recordings, which were more within the modern mainstream Jazz idiom. This album is however pure Jazz-Rock Fusion with some World Music influences, mostly rhythmically. In addition to Beckett’s brilliant trumpet parts, the rest of the instrumental work is highly charged by the electric guitar and keyboards, which take the music towards the British Fusion, which flourished at the time.

Russell, Miller and Runswick play some highly exciting soli throughout the album, which could be easily associated with the Fusion bands active at the time, like IsotopeFind albums by this artist, Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, IfFind albums by this artist and many others. With the Latin / Caribbean rhythms added, this album is certainly quite unique and in retrospect deserves a much wider recognition than it managed to achieve.

Overall, this is a classic British Jazz gem, worthy a proper place in any serious record collection. It should also be quite educational for the new generation of musicians, showing how cross-pollination and genre-crossing can lead to magnificent results, not to mention the respect due to all these wonderful musicians, who proved there are no limits to creativity. This is an absolute must of course and thanks to John’s initiative to make it available again, which he is practicing on the daily basis by running the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label reissues label.

He was also one of the first musicians to start their own record label, which was called OpenianFind albums on this label, on which this album was originally released. The Open Music trio included, apart from Downes, one of the following bass players: Barry GuyFind albums by this artist, Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist (the first two are present on this recording) and drummer Denis SmithFind albums by this artist. Downes composed all the music and played mostly various flutes, although he was equally fluent playing the alto saxophone. The music is excellent and truly visionary for the time of the recording. The level of interplay between the trio members is exceptional and the virtuosity of the players is exemplary and the album lost none of its vigor and charm over the years. A great example of early British Free Jazz at its best, suitable for most Jazz listeners, as although highly improvisational, the natural flow of the music makes it easily acceptable to most people. The music on this album was used several times as a part of dance show, with the trio performing live and accompanying the dancers. Free Jazz listeners should definitely try this gem.

This is the fourth album by Polish Progressive Rock / Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble Light CoorporationFind albums by this artist, led by guitarist / composer Mariusz SobanskiFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded by a septet, which also includes saxophonist Pawel RogozaFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kuba JankowiakFind albums by this artist, pianist Witold OleszakFind albums by this artist, bassists Piotr OsesFind albums by this artist (acoustic) and Krzysztof WaskiewiczFind albums by this artist (electric) and drummer Milosz KrauzFind albums by this artist. It includes eight original compositions, all by Sobanski, which are accompanied by eight poems also written by him, printed in the album´s booklet, which remain as unsung lyrics accompanying the music. The music was recorded live in the studio, but the sound quality and dynamics are excellent.

For the fourth time in a row Sobanski and his ensemble manage to surprise me completely, which happens extremely rarely with other artists. The chameleonic ability to constantly change the lineup and the music, but at the same time create some of the most fascinating music on the Polish scene, which is exploding with talent and extremely competitive, is truly astounding. This album is definitely the most jazzy and most open of the ensemble´s releases so far, and brings fond memories of some of the Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist ambitious projects, which incorporated Rock, Jazz and contemporary Classical idioms, but also the work of some early British Jazz-Rock pioneers like Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist. The "dirty" guitar tone and the superb brass solos, backed by a funky rhythm section are simply delightful and completely unique. There is no other group, neither in Poland nor anywhere else on this planet, which plays anything remotely similar.

There are also new elements, which appear here for the first time, such as the Improvised Music approach the ensemble clearly demonstrates, and of course the element of freedom in the improvisations, which are often quite bold and clearly reach beyond the boundaries of Prog, which initially defined the group´s orientation. Over time Light Coorporation managed to evade and steer clear of all attempts to get neatly categorized, which is one of their major fortes. The last track on the album, which lasts over seventeen minutes, is a modern symphonic poem, of rare beauty and intensity, which simply de facto defines the music.

Listening to this album is like a rollercoaster ride, which themes, rhythms, intensities, crescendos and silences chasing each other constantly. The music takes the listener by the throat and does not let go well until the last echoes of the music are all gone; a completely unique experience, which happens only once in a blue moon.

I have no idea why Light Coorporation gets such a limited feedback in Poland, but the fact that the prestigious British ReR label releases their album for the fourth consecutive time is a symbol of distinction and appreciation. Hopefully they will be able to get more recognition back at home, as they truly deserve. This is definitely one of the best and most interesting Polish albums of 2014, and another great accomplishment by Sobanski and his cohorts.

This is a reissue of the second and third albums by British Jazz pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, both recorded in a trio format with bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist and drummer Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist / flautist Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist plays on one track of the debut album, which presents eight original compositions, all by Riley. The second album presents twelve original compositions, six each by Riley and Guy. These two albums were originally released in 1969 and 1970 respectively, by CBSFind albums on this label (the European branch of ColumbiaFind albums on this label). This reissue is in fact a reissue of the 1999 remastered editions of these two albums, which disappeared from the market immediately following their release.

Together with these two albums, CBS, initially under the Realm Jazz moniker and later just as CBS, released also several albums by other British Jazz musicians such as the first two albums by drummer / composer Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist, the first three albums by guitarist Ray RussellFind albums by this artist and debut albums by vibraphonist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, as well as albums by groups like Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, Soft MachineFind albums by this artist and others. All these are exceptional examples of completely non commercial / highly artistic music released by a Major record label, a phenomenon which reflected the spirit of that particular era and lasted for a very brief period of time, sadly never to be repeated again

By the time this music was recorded, i.e. by the late 1960s, British Jazz underwent a dramatic transformation, a quantum leap no less, from imitation to innovation. After copying the American Jazz tradition for decades, the post WWII generation rebelled and rapidly found its own methods of expression, embracing such diverse influences as contemporary European Classical music, World-Music and Rock and amalgamating them into a new identity, which would become first modern British Jazz and soon after copied all over Europe, including even the countries behind the Iron Curtain, modern European Jazz. In the aftermath of these remarkable events British Jazz scene was encompassing a diverse rage of stylistic alternatives, from Jazz-Rock and Jazz-World Fusions, via modern mainstream to a whole range of alternative / Avant-Garde experimentation including Free Jazz and Improvised Music.

It takes just a brief moment into the first album to realize that Riley belongs to the Avant-Garde oriented group of British musicians, who value freedom of expression and individuality more than convention and acceptance. Even on these two early albums he is already well advanced in his experimentation, keeping melody only as an entry point to his music, which is entirely based on the dialogue (or in this case trialogue) and collective improvisation, rather than on following the chord progressions of standards and keeping regular time signatures. Guy, who was just over twenty years old when this music was recorded, proves to be an ideal partner, a born adventurer and complete nonconformist. His bass playing on these two albums is an encyclopedic textbook of improvised music moves for fellow bassists, developed completely spontaneously and subconsciously. But it is Jackson, who is the biggest surprise on these albums, considering his almost entirely conventional background before these sessions as one of Britain´s most sought after modern mainstream drummers. His wonderful integration with Riley and Guy here is simply sensational and a superb proof of his open-mindedness and musicality.

In the years that followed these sessions Riley would record many more wonderful albums in many different settings, but these two albums would always symbolize his individuality and prophetic vision. The early signs of his exceptional abilities, which were about to push the boundaries of music and contribute to its development, influencing generations of players, are clearly evident herein, turning these albums into instant classics.

The most startling realization one is faced with, while listening to these two albums, is the fact that not only the music did not age or lost any of its relevance, but it still is right there on the forefront of the musical Art Form, exactly where it was almost fifty years ago. These iconic recordings have earned their position in the Pantheon of British Jazz right from the moment they were recorded, and their unavailability during most of the time that passed since was a crime against culture, somewhat repented by this current reissue.

1st album from 1970 by this obscure, but brilliant UK jazz / rock outfit led by the superb guitarist Ray Russell and featuring the vocal talents of Alex Harvey. The brass section includes some of the best jazz musicians active in UK at that time and the driving power is extraordinary. Although similar to other bands (like If and Nucleus) Rock Workshop had a sharper edge and more rocky approach. What a find!

This is an extremely rare album and this reissue is most welcome to the many fans of the band and the genre.

Guitarist / composer Ray RussellFind albums by this artist has been active on the British Jazz and Fusion scene for the last five decades and has always been considered as a first class musician. Most of his recorded output belongs to the Fusion movement and he can be certainly considered as one of the genre’s pioneers. In the early and mid-1960s Russell was a member of the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist and Georgie FameFind albums by this artist’s backing band Blue FlamesFind albums by this artist, two outfits that were among the first to combine Rhythm And Blues with Jazz. By the end of the 1960s Russell started to lead his own groups and record with them, although in parallel he participated in numerous recordings in his capacity as a studio musician. He was also a founding member of the excellent Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist ensemble and later of RMSFind albums by this artist. This album presents Russell’s debut album as a leader and is quite different from most of his recorded output, as it is closer to straightforward Jazz then anything else he recorded. Accompanied by three excellent young musicians: Roy FryFind albums by this artist – piano, Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist – bass and Alan RushtonFind albums by this artist – drums, the quartet plays some fabulous music, composed mostly by Russell (two standards are also included). Russell’s guitar tone, completely devoid of any electronic devices so popular at the time, sounds more like classic guitar work by Grant GreenFind albums by this artist or Barney KesselFind albums by this artist, but with a harder edge and more attack. Overall this is a great document of the era and of Russell’s musical legacy, which stands the test of time beautifully. Great fun and recommended listening!

The 2CD album presents twenty tracks, seventeen of which are original compositions by Russell, one is by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, one by Charles LloydFind albums by this artist and one is a standard. The sound quality of the recordings is brilliant, and hard to believe these recordings were done almost sixty years ago. A few of these tracks were released on an LP in 2000, the early days of the fabulous Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, and now the complete material is available, for which all British Jazz fans are eternally grateful.

Russell is undoubtedly one of the great silent heroes of the British Jazz scene, rarely in the limelight but continuously active behind the scenes, an author of countless compositions and extensive work as composer of soundtracks for films and TV, a sought after session player with myriad of albums he plays on, but sadly with rather limited recorded legacy as a leader. Most of his albums as a leader originate from the late 1960s and early 1970s, including those by the brilliant Brass Rock ensemble Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, which he led. Therefore, this excellent album is even more important to portray his contributions.

The music on this album is stylistically quite “well behaved”, as far as the melodic compositions are concerned, strongly rooted in the Jazz tradition, before Russell moved into the more Fusion oriented pathway. His guitar work is absolutely brilliant, displaying his total control of the instrument and stunning technique, continuity and flow. These were pivotal times for the new modern British Jazz scene, where the essence of the new British feel, elegance, sophistication and unique esthetics were forged, which this album portrays splendidly. In retrospect there were very few guitar players in UK at the time, of such class and proficiency.

Overall, this is another “bull’s eye” release by Jazz In Britain, which just keeps the juices of the British Jazz history fans flowing, by unearthing such marvelous treasures from the past. Meticulously researched, offering best possible sound quality and most importantly digging deep into the archives, spearing no efforts to bring us the music, this is a true labor of love. Personally this is one of the strongest releases on the label, although everything they release is worth having. Thank you!
