JOHN ABERCROMBIE ~ GATEWAY
ECM 1061 (Barcode: 602517762121) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2008

US guitarist / composer John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist emerged as one of the most formidable forces in Fusion in the late 1960s / early 1970s. By the time he signed with the legendary ECMFind albums on this label label his musical horizons expanded tremendously and he started experimenting with music outside the relatively limited scope of Fusion. This trio recording with British bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and US drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist is a great example of this metamorphosis. Abercrombie still uses Fusion phrases and voicing, but the format is much more free and exploratory. The music was composed mostly by Holland (four of the six tracks on this album), who would become one of the greatest modern Jazz composers in addition to his virtuoso bass playing. DeJohnette composed one of the tracks and co-composed the remaining one with Abercrombie. The performances are of course stellar and the album remains an important milestone of adventurous Fusion, similar to John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist´s "ExtrapolationFind albums with this title". Brilliant stuff!

MUHAL RICHARD ABRAMS ~ THE COMPLETE REMASTERED RECORDINGS ON BLACK SAINT & SOUL NOTE VOLUME 2
CAM JAZZ 1041 (Barcode: 8052405142504) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1975 - 1995 Released: 2016

This superb Box Set collects recordings by the legendary American keyboardist / composer / conductor Muhal Richard AbramsFind albums by this artist released on the Black SaintFind albums on this label and Soul NoteFind albums on this label labels. It includes nine albums, four of which are duets: "SightsongFind albums with this title" with bassist Malachi FavorsFind albums by this artist, "Lifelong AmbitionsFind albums with this title" with violinist Leroy JenkinsFind albums by this artist, "DuetFind albums with this title" with pianist Amina Claudine MyersFind albums by this artist and finally "Duets And SolosFind albums with this title" with saxophonist Roscoe MitchellFind albums by this artist. The album "Shadowgraph, 5 (Sextet)Find albums with this title", released under the name of trombonist / composer George LewisFind albums by this artist and presenting music composed by him, features Abrams playing piano on two tracks. The remaining four albums: "1-OQA+19Find albums with this title", "Colors In Thirty-ThirdFind albums with this title", "Family TalkFind albums with this title" and "Song For AllFind albums with this title" present various ensembles led by Abrams, which include the crème de la crème of American improvisers of the period, including saxophonists Anthony BraxtonFind albums by this artist, Henry ThreadgillFind albums by this artist and John PurcellFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Jack WalrathFind albums by this artist and Eddie AllenFind albums by this artist, bassists Dave HollandFind albums by this artist (well he was a Brit) and Brad JonesFind albums by this artist, drummers Steve McCallFind albums by this artist and Andrew CyrilleFind albums by this artist and numerous others. All the music on these last four albums was composed by Abrams and the music on the duo recording is, as expected, partly his and partly by his duet partners.

Abrams is best known as the founder of the original AACM in Chicago in 1965 and then the New York chapter of AACM after he moved there permanently in 1975. He was a prolific recording artist, with an impressive list of albums to his credit. He plays piano, synthesizer and conducts the ensembles. These recordings are all excellent examples of his work, which is a completely unique combination of Free Jazz, Improvised Music and Contemporary Classical music techniques. His music is deeply influenced by the Blues as well as the compositional approach of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist, who was his model. In retrospect his work could be seen as a continuation of Ellington´s legacy into the realm of Avant-Garde Jazz.

The music is absolutely brilliant and fascinating and connoisseurs of Free Jazz / Improvised Music / Avant-Garde will find it obviously essential, but other less refined listeners might find it quite accessible, with just a minimal effort of attentive listening. This is definitely an important document of the American Free Jazz movement, which deserves to be preserved for posterity and which should serve as a source if inspiration to the young generation of contemporary Free Jazz artists.
Side Note
The Italian independent record label Black SaintFind albums on this label was founded by the music critic / author / producer Giacomo PellicciottiFind albums by this artist in 1975. It was taken over by the producer Giovanni BonandriniFind albums by this artist in 1978 and a year later (1979) a sister label, called Soul NoteFind albums on this label, was established. The twin labels were run by Giovanni and later his son Flavio BonandriniFind albums by this artist, until they were sold in 2008 to the Italian KEPACH Music Group, which already owned the CAM JazzFind albums on this label label, and which also bought another Italian independent record label Dischi Della QuerciaFind albums on this label.

The mission of the Black Saint / Soul Note labels was to record and document the Free Jazz / Improvised Music / Avant-Garde scene, mostly from the US but also from Europe, which continued between mid 1970s and late 1990s and produced a staggering collection of almost 550 albums recorded by world's most important Jazz innovators active at the time, providing an opportunity to American (mostly Afro-American) musicians, who would have never managed to make these recordings at home, ridden by racism, alienation and closed-mindedness. Without these two labels most of this fantastic human creativity would have been never documented.

However, the Black Saint / Soul Note Box Sets produced under the CAM JazzFind albums on this label moniker are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard to the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires us to treat our cultural legacy with respect and loyalty.

These Box Sets have no booklet which presents researched historical background and exact discographical information of the albums included, and most importantly an overview of the music and its meaning and contribution to the Jazz Art form. Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, the information is in most cases too small to be readable at all. In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap!

GERI ALLEN ~ THE LIFE OF A SONG
TELARC 83598 (Barcode: 089408359828) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004

This is one of those Jazz albums that have everything I love to have on a Jazz album: A brilliant female pianist and composer (Geri AllenFind albums by this artist), a divine rhythm section (Dave HollandFind albums by this artist - bass and Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist – drums), a piano trio (my favorite Jazz format) and a superb audiophile sound quality (TelarcFind albums on this label DSD). Add to this the brilliant performances by the musicians, superb compositions, intricate polyrhythmic background and completely original treatment of standards and you have a formula for a perfect Jazz albums that holds surprises and pleasures for repeated listening sessions. The album includes eight Allen originals and three standards. On the last track, which is a long suite, the trio is transformed into a sextet with the addition of three horns. It’s no wander that Geri Allen is considered one of the finest pianist (and musicians in general) on the contemporary scene – this album proves how well deserved this appreciation is. Highly recommended!

ARILD ANDERSEN ~ CELEBRATION
ECM 2259 (Barcode: 602527909479) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2012

Norwegian bassist / composer Arild AndersenFind albums by this artist has been one of my favorite musicians since decades and his immense talent and class were always beacons of light in the dark. His elegance and natural cool emphasize the best qualities of Scandinavian Jazz in particular and European Jazz in general. His numerous recording, mostly for ECMFind albums on this label, are all exemplary and his unshaken quality over the years is simply legendary.

This album finds Andersen in quite unusual circumstances, cooperating with a large Jazz Orchestra, in this case the Scottish National Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist directed by saxophonist Tommy SmithFind albums by this artist. He and the orchestra perform five compositions by fellow ECM musicians: Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist and Trygve SeimFind albums by this artist (Garbarek and Seim being also fellow Norwegians) and one of his compositions, celebrating the music of ECM, which is considered by many to be the most important contribution to contemporary musical Culture in the last four decades.

The six compositions have been arranged for the large orchestra, with the arrangements being very delicate and spacey, opening up slots for beautiful bass solos performed by Anderson and other musicians. The overall atmosphere of the music is very lyrical and somewhat subdued, applying the famous Scandinavian touch to the entire project, even in the case when the original music originates well beyond that sphere of influence. Andersen stands in the focal point performing some absolutely amazing bass solos, which could drive most bass players to complete despair. As stated before, the orchestra takes a step back, playing subtly and beautifully, but always remaining in the background, where it belongs in this particular project. This modesty and proper perspective deserve a great praise.

The music was recorded live and as usual for an ECM production offers a wonderful sonic quality in addition to the obvious musical virtues. Those familiar with Andersen´s achievements will love this music and those still ignorant of them should use this opportunity to repent. Brilliant stuff!

JULIAN ARGUELLES ~ CIRCULARITY
CAM JAZZ 7872 (Barcode: 8052405141149) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014

This is an album by British saxophonist / composer Julian ArguellesFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, legendary bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Martin FranceFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Arguelles.

The performances are everything one can expect from a team of this statue – souring and brilliant all the way, with superb contributions by all four musicians. Personally this album is of special interest as one of the last recordings by Taylor before his untimely death, and his performances are truly breathtaking as expected. Also the ultra-rare appearance of Holland on a British album adds spice, especially since the music is rather conventional as far as Holland’s usual environment is concerned, which offers a rather unusual opportunity to hear him play straightforwardly (in the best meaning of the word).

The compositions, as already mentioned, are not exactly my favorite music, mostly kept well within the mainstream and only the more open pieces offer a suitable environment for the musicians to show their best side, but that is all a matter of personal preferences of course. The strength of the quartet alone is a reason why this album is worth listening to and enjoy it. Personally, again, the album’s sound is rather harsh and unbalanced, which bothers me a bit, but perhaps it’s just me.

In short for British Jazz enthusiasts this is something well worthy of inclusion in their collections.

MARCIN BOZEK ~ AFFAIR WITH ART
NASZE NAGRANIA 006 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014

This is the debut album by the Polish bassist / composer Marcin BozekFind albums by this artist, recorded solo using electric bass. The album includes just three tracks, the longest of which is almost half an hour in duration. The music is all spontaneously improvised

Since the day I´ve heard Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist´ "Journal VioloneFind albums with this title" in 1968 (and later on Dave HollandFind albums by this artist´s "Emerald TearsFind albums with this title" almost a decade later) I have learned not to take anything for granted, especially so solo bass albums, which in some cases emerged as cornerstones of modern music, Jazz or otherwise. However, there is always also a possibility that a solo bass album might simply turn out to be a worthless masturbation.

One must always admire the boldness of an artistic statement, such as this album. Regardless if one is able to connect to this music or not, one should at least respect the inner urge of an artist to express his emotions. After all nobody is forcing anybody to listen to a particular album after all.

This music suffers from the same problem that other Avant-Garde explorations also often suffer from; it is a total statement completely disregarding the listener, a self-concentrated satisfaction of an urge rather than an attempt to communicate. Therefore it remains mostly uncommunicative, and probably unable to make the listener to enjoy the experience. Notwithstanding however, art is not always meant to be pleasurable, en contraire, some best examples of artistic expression are deliberately non pleasurable, in order to shock and subvert.

To put it plainly, this is not music for everybody, or even better put it is music for very few listeners, who are able to take the plunge with the artists into the unknown, regardless of the result. Avant-Garde is here to stay, and this is Avant-Garde at its boldest. If only because of that, I´m all for it.

ANOUAR BRAHEM ~ THIMAR
ECM 1641 (Barcode: 731453988828) ~ TUNISIA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1997 Released: 1998

This is an absolutely astounding piece of music by the Tunisian oud Master Anouar BrahemFind albums by this artist, accompanied by two British Jazz legends: Saxophonist John SurmanFind albums by this artist and bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist. The music completely eludes all attempts of classification, although obviously most listeners will probably tend to see it as a mixture of Jazz and World music. In fact, although it is composed (by Brahem except for one peace each by Surman and Holland) it´s pretty obvious that it was created as an improvisation by these musicians. The most astounding aspect of this recording is the obvious ease and natural "feel" displayed by Surman and Holland playing this music, in spite of their overwhelming Jazz background, which perhaps prove the intimate relationship between Middle Eastern music and Jazz, both being of course highly improvised. It goes without saying that I recommend this gem to every open-minded music lover, as the experience of listening to it is highly rewarding and deeply moving!

GARY BURTON ~ LIKE MINDS
CONCORD 013431480327 (Barcode: 013431480327) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1997 Released: 1998

This is an album by iconic American vibraphonist / composer / bandleader Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quintet setting with a dreamy lineup, which includes pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist, British bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten tracks, nine of which are original compositions (four by Metheny, three by Corea and two by Burton) and one is a standard.

Apart for the fact that this is the first album on which Corea and Metheny play together, everything else about it is completely ordinary: the music is all within melodic mainstream Jazz, no challenge whatsoever, all perfectly executed of course by these brilliant musicians, but a classic example of music going nowhere really.

Of course many Jazz listeners can enjoy this album immensely, but in retrospect it left no lasting impression. Burton, Corea and Metheny play exactly like they always do on their own albums and the quintet does not reach an ensemble sound. The rhythm section is as perfect as possible, but again they just play completely ordinarily. As much as I love and respect the individual musicians playing here, this album just ain’t cutting it. And yes – it won the Grammy in 1999…

Overall, this is a typical American Jazz album of the late 1990s, which offers smooth, likeable music, which shows exactly what is wrong with American Jazz – it is just frozen in time for decades. Great for cocktail parties…

CIRCLE ~ PARIS-CONCERT
ECM 1018/19 (Barcode: 042284316323) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 1991

Circle was a short-lived quartet formed by US pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist at the high peak of his activity in the field of Free Jazz and improvised music with three other outstanding and legendary musicians also active in the same field: saxophonist Anthony BraxtonFind albums by this artist, British bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Barry AltschulFind albums by this artist. This live recording is the only document of the quartet´s performances and it is a remarkable piece of music in every respect. The music played on this album is a mixture of standards and original compositions by all the four musicians involved and presents a unique glimpse at the Free Jazz scene at the peek of its development. The performances are absolutely stunning from start to finish and the player´s virtuosity obvious at all times. Telepathic conversations, solos, duos, trios and the entire quartet playing chase each other constantly, creating an atmosphere of intellectual tension and anticipation. This is absolutely brilliant stuff, which has been one of my favorite albums for forty years now. A must to all Free Jazz listeners!

MILES DAVIS ~ BITCHES BREW (40TH ANNIVERSARY LEGACY EDITION)
COLUMBIA 775150 (Barcode: 886977515026) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2010

Almost every music lover on this planet is aware of the fact that this is a monumental piece of music, one of the pillars of modern Jazz Art Form and way beyond. I have lived with this music for 40 years now, since the day it was first released and I opened the gatefold double LP to place the vinyl on my record player, starting a musical journey that would last a lifetime. Now, while playing this new edition of the album, I feel the same kind of excitement and elation that always accompanies me when this music is playing. In the years that passed I´ve written extensively about Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and the "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" album, so I won´t repeat myself. Suffice to say, that for me this is a masterpiece of extraordinary proportions, which gets better with time. I´d like however, to expand on the subject of how this edition compliments "The Complete Bitches Brew SessionsFind albums with this title" Box Set, making it clear that having just one of these two editions is simply not enough. First and foremost, this edition includes the version of the album as originally released on the double LP set 40 years ago. This particular version was elaborately edited, spliced, mixed and cooked by producer Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist, which was often dramatically different from the music actually recorded in the studio by the musicians. Regardless of the fact if one likes or agrees to what Macero did with the music, this is what the world knew as "Bitches Brew" until the appearance of the Box Set. The Box Set does not include any of these particular collages and therefore they are parallel, but far from identical. In addition, this edition includes six previously unreleased pieces of music; the first two being alternate takes from the actual sessions not included in the Box Set (which makes the "complete" part of the Box Set´s title redundant) and the other four being single edits from the album (previously unreleased on CD) – yes ColumbiaFind albums on this label did make singles for the radio from this album – imagine that! If all that is not enough, this set also includes a DVD with the Miles Davis quintet (Miles, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist) filmed in Copenhagen in November 1969 shortly after this prophetic music was recorded, which alone is worth the price of the entire set. So here we have it – another essential piece of recorded history that everybody simply has to have.

MILES DAVIS ~ BITCHES BREW LIVE
COLUMBIA 81485 (Barcode: 886978148520) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2011

This album combines two live performances by the Miles DavisFind albums by this artist ensemble recorded just over a year apart: a July 1969 recording at Newport Jazz Festival and the legendary August 1970 Isle Of Wight performance. The recordings of the revolutionary "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" album happened between these two performances, which both include the early / late (respectively) versions of the material present on the album. The three Newport tracks are especially interesting, as they are previously unreleased and also present Miles in an intimate quartet setting with pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist. The Isle Of Wight set is performed by a septet, which includes also saxophonist Gary BartzFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist and percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist. MILES DAVIS ~ LIVE IN EUROPE 1969: THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL.2
COLUMBIA 887254185321 (Barcode: 887254185321) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2013

Although it never reached the acclaimed status of the first and second legendary Miles DavisFind albums by this artist quintets, this was in fact the third quintet, with saxophonists Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist being the only link to the previous group and pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, British bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist being the "new boys on the block". Unfortunately, in contrasts to its importance as the interim vehicle, which served Miles during the period of his most radical transformation, this quintet never recorded in the studio, leaving behind only live recordings, most of which were never previously released and appear officially here for the first time.

After all this was the group that Miles toured with in 1969, after completing the seminal "In A Silent WayFind albums with this title" album and while he was recording the world-shattering "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" tour de force. Shorter, Corea and Holland played on the former album and Shorter, Corea, Holland and DeJohnette played on the latter, so the links are obvious. The material herein presents two live appearances separated by a period of mere four months (July 1969 – November 1969), but musically the gap is enormous, with the earlier recording still anchored in the "In A Silent Way" mood, while the later are all "Bitches Brew" and beyond.

Miles cognoscenti will find here music, which is the closest to Free Jazz he ever played. Miles was never really part of the Free Jazz movement, going in different direction, which was his very own. But this quintet and Corea especially, were at the heart of the Free scene at the time. Corea used Holland and DeJohnette on his sublime "The Complete `Is` SessionsFind albums with this title" album, which was recorded at that exact time, and he and Holland will later form the A.R.C.Find albums by this artist trio and CircleFind albums by this artist quartet, both seminal Free Jazz ensembles. Miles gives Corea and the rest of the quintet space to stretch out, playing his parts splendidly as ever, even though it´s not exactly his "natural habitat", thus portraying him quite differently from the "iron fist" dominant leader status he was usually considered to be.

The music is sublime from start to end, completely untouched by time and filling a large gap in the recorded history of Miles Davis and his music, at its most pivotal period. The fact that we had to wait so long for this stuff to be released is beyond criminal, but as usual "better late than never" is the only solace. There are some slight sound imperfections, but considering this music was recorded live almost 45 years ago, this is completely meaningless. The DVD is sensational as well, both the audio and video contents, and constitutes a highly important document of the Miles Davis saga.

Of course this is an absolute must in any serious Miles Davis collection and hats off to ColumbiaFind albums on this label for keeping this legacy alive, even if the do it for the money. Brilliant stuff!

MILES DAVIS ~ MILES AT THE FILLMORE 1970: THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL.3
COLUMBIA 887654338129 (Barcode: 887654338129) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2014

This is the 3rd installment of the "Bootleg Series" live recordings by American trumpeter / composer Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, released by ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records. The recordings in this set originate mainly from the performances at the Fillmore East by the Miles Davis septet during four consecutive nights between June 17 and June 20, 1970. Three additional tracks originate from an earlier Miles Davis sextet performance at Fillmore West on April 11, 1970, recorded just a few days after Columbia released "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" (on March 30, 1970), which changed the face of music forever.

The sextet and septet were the post-"Bitches Brew" working groups, which featured saxophonist Steve GrossmanFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist (in the septet only, first double keyboards group by Miles), bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist and percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist. Except for Grossman and Jarrett all the other musicians took part in the recording of "Bitches Brew".

The music is of course a direct follow up to the studio versions of these tunes and Davis makes no attempt to "ease up" or compromise the music and its intrinsic freedom and improvised nature, even though the Fillmore venues were at the time the Mecca and Medina of American Rock. Davis considered his music to be an integral part of the revolutionary wave of music created at the time, typically ignoring ridiculous genre divisions, and the audiences seem to share his attitude wholeheartedly.

Live recordings are always the best opportunity to check out the authenticity and integrity of musicians and these recordings are a great proof of the fact that the "Bitches Brew" magic really happened in the studio as a result of superb playing and visionary leadership, rather than post-production work by Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist. The overall level of the individual performances is of course incredibly high and inspired, full of intensity and virtuosic mastery.

Although the Fillmore West tracks suffer from some sound quality plight, this music is an absolute must to all Miles Davis fans. The four consecutive nights at Fillmore East present a similar set list, but the actual performances are so dramatically different that listening to them opens up a whole new way of comprehending the music of Miles Davis and understanding the concept of Jazz and its unique nature.

Four and a half decades later this music still kicks ass as only very few other sound sculptures are able to, and hopefully will continue to do so in the decades to come. Spearheading the Golden Decade, Miles Davis justifies his Godly status in full.

MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE IN A SILENT WAY SESSIONS

This is the 5th chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. This set presents the complete sessions which originally resulted in the In A Silent WayFind albums with this title album. The material was recorded over a 6 months period (September 1968 through February 1969) and clearly shows the new direction Miles was shifting into, after his legendary second Quintet was expanded and a new circle of musicians was selected by the Master to take with him the journey into the (then) unknown territory (Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist on keyboards, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist on guitar, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist on electric piano and Dave HollandFind albums by this artist on bass). Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist on drums, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist on sax and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on electric piano stayed from the second Quintet and also play on these sessions, which means that Miles used three keyboards players simultaniously in some takes. The music is much more spacey, atmospheric and further removed from the strict Jazz format, clearly pointing towards the Fusion explosion, which was to errupt on Bitches BrewFind albums with this title - the next revolutionary album. This is some of the best music ever created on this planet and absolutely essential!

By the time this material was recorded Miles’ approach to creating music changed dramatically: he was more of a captain giving the crew a general direction as to where he wanted to go, ratter that a navigator concerned with the exact details as to the course taken. An enormous amount of freedom was granted to the stellar collection of participants (Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist, Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist – keyboards, Steve GrossmanFind albums by this artist, Bennie MaupinFind albums by this artist, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist – saxes, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, Ron CarterFind albums by this artist, Michael HendersonFind albums by this artist – bass, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Sonny SharrockFind albums by this artist – guitar, Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist, Gene PerlaFind albums by this artist – drums, Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist – percussion) and for the first time Miles promoted John McLaughlin to be the primary soloist, much more dominant than his trumpet. McLaughlin of course was up to the job and presents some incredible guitar playing, firmly establishing the electric guitar as the leading instrument in instrumental music for the years to come. His fearless ventures into the uncharted territory of Fusion and even Rock would become a beacon for generations of guitar players, a source of inspiration and a vital learning tool. The unrestrained, almost jam-like atmosphere of the sessions inspired all the participants to search for the best they could achieve and the resulting music is simply phenomenal. This is visionary and groundbreaking, Promethean and pioneering musical creation, an absolute must to any Jazz fan that takes his music seriously..
A special note to collectors:
The initial release of all the Miles Davis Box Sets in this reissue series is packaged in an exquisite metal-bound (except chapter 5 which is cardboard-bound) frame housed in a hard cardboard CD-sized slipcase (except for chapters 1 & 8 which have a metal slipcase). Once the initial release is sold out, the CDs are repackaged in a tall-box digipack book format. Naturally the tall-box issues have a much lower retail price tag. All the initial release CD-sized issues become priceless collectors’ items in time.

JOE FARRELL ~ ORIGINAL ALBUM CLASSICS
SONY 888750636829 (Barcode: 888750636829) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 - 1975 Released: 2015

This Box Set collects five of the six albums recorded by brilliant American flautist / saxophonist / composer Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist and released between 1970 and 1975 on the legendary CTIFind albums on this label Records label. They are: his debut as a leader and first album "Joe Farrell QuartetFind albums with this title", the second "OutbackFind albums with this title", the fourth "Penny ArcadeFind albums with this title", the fifth "Upon This RockFind albums with this title" and the sixth "Canned FunkFind albums with this title". His third album "Moon GermsFind albums with this title" was separately reissued on CD in 2001 by SonyFind albums on this label. Farrell joined the first incarnation of Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist in 1972 and took part in the recording of their first two legendary albums. The music presented on these five albums falls quite neatly into two separate categories: the first two albums are complex modern Jazz / Jazz-Rock Fusion and even include some Free Form moments, whereas the next three albums are Groove / Funk oriented.

The first album ("Joe Farrell Quartet") is especially noteworthy, as it is one of the most important and beautiful documents of the era. Farrell´s quartet, which also included pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist (all from Miles DavisFind albums by this artist electric band) is augmented by the presence of guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist on two tracks, turning the resulting quintet into a mighty power of Nature. It is worthwhile to compare these tracks with McLaughlin´s debut album "ExtrapolationFind albums with this title" or the Jack BruceFind albums by this artist album "Things We LikeFind albums with this title", which also features McLaughlin. Together these three a.m. albums contain some of the most important and powerful music ever made.

The second album places Farrell alongside Corea again, but this time with bassist Buster WilliamsFind albums by this artist and legendary drummer Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist, with whom Farrell recorded a series of superb albums for the Blue NoteFind albums on this label label between 1968 and 1971. It presents superb modern Jazz and Fusion, played by Masters of the trade. Together with the third album ("Moon Germs"), which is not present in this Box Set, which features Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on piano, Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist on bass and again Jack DeJohnette on drums, and of course his numerous recordings as a sideman, Farrell established his position as one of the leading figures on the US scene.

The remaining three albums document the transition Farrell made from modern Jazz / Fusion into Jazz-Funk, which is characterized by more emphasis on melodic content and Funk / Groove rhythmic patterns. Although many of Farrell´s fans had a hard time getting used to this new musical direction, his work in that genre was always top notch, with impeccable musicianship and wonderful compositions. He cooperated with several top players specializing in that specific area, like guitarist Joe BeckFind albums by this artist, bassist Herb BushlerFind albums by this artist and others. In retrospect these albums are classics of the genre, sound superbly fresh today and honestly had very little true competition by anybody else over the years.

Farrell, who sadly died in 1986, aged just 48, was definitely an exceptional player and composer, who contributed immensely to American Jazz by constantly searching for new way of expression, ignoring genre constrains and mainstream thinking. This Box Set is an essential listening to every Jazz / Fusion fan on this planet.
Side Note
The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label, the "5 Original AlbumsFind albums with this title" by UniversalFind albums on this label, the Box Sets by RhinoFind albums on this label and other similar releases are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.

The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.

In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

HERBIE HANCOCK ~ RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS
VERVE 744826 (Barcode: 602517448261) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2007

Jazz legend Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist finally repays the debt the Jazz world owes to Rock legend Joni MitchellFind albums by this artist. Joni’s 1979 album MingusFind albums with this title stands out to this very day as one of the greatest tributes ever made to Jazz by a non-Jazz musician and I always wondered when is someone going to settle the score. Well better late than never and better still if the musician to do so is someone of Hancock’s statue and sensibility. For me Joni’s music always had subtle jazzy undertones, even if she didn’t use Jazz musicians as her backing band (like on “Mingus” and a few other albums), and therefore this project sounds completely natural and perfectly matched. Hancock assembled a superb quintet for the job, with Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist (soprano and tenor saxophone), Dave HollandFind albums by this artist (bass), Vinnie ColaiutaFind albums by this artist (drums) and Lionel LouekeFind albums by this artist (guitar). The ten tracks, combined and arranged to constitute a continuos suite-like experience, include eight Joni’s songs and two Jazz standards. Several vocalists were invited to interpret the vocal parts on six of the tracks and these include Norah JonesFind albums by this artist, Tina TurnerFind albums by this artist, Corinne Bailey RaeFind albums by this artist, Luciana SouzaFind albums by this artist, Joni Mitchell herself and Leonard CohenFind albums by this artist, who recites rather than sings. The overall effect is absolutely beautiful and deeply moving. The musicians are all Masters of their trade and they are amongst the most sensitive accompanist, as well as first rate soloists. Hats off Mr. Hancock and thanks for this wonderful gift of music and thank you Joni for bestowing your great talent on all of us – you truly deserve this tribute. Essential!

HERBIE HANCOCK ~ THE NEW STANDARD
VERVE 988403 (Barcode: 602498840351) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1996 Released: 2005

After playing jazz standards throughout all his life (in addition to original music of course), Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist decided to record an album dedicated to his rendition of contemporary Pop songs, which in his opinion deserve to enter the standard songbook. The BeatlesFind albums by this artist, Steve WonderFind albums by this artist and scores of other songwriters active since the 1960’s composed thousands of songs worthy of becoming classics, yet the jazz standards to this day are mostly tunes written in the first half of the 20th century. Hancock selected a dreamy sextet of some of the best contemporary jazz Masters to take part in this recording, with Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist – sax, John ScofieldFind albums by this artist – guitar, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist – bass, Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist – drums and Don AliasFind albums by this artist – percussion. He takes the original tunes quite far from the source, transforming them into jazz with masterful touch and divine sensibility. Of course all the players perform beautifully, with Hancock taking a few fiery solos and so do Brecker and Scofield. The rhythm section provides solid and sophisticated background and the entire session just swings like there is no tomorrow. Absolutely delightful!

DAVE HOLLAND ~ EXTENSIONS
ECM 1410 (Barcode: 602517758421) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1989 Released: 2008

British bassist / composer Dave HollandFind albums by this artist is undoubtedly one of the greatest Masters of his trade. From his role as a member of the Miles DavisFind albums by this artist ensembles at their most revolutionary transition period through his work with other distinguished Jazz musicians and his work as a leader, Holland emerges as a pillar of stability and inventiveness combined into one Genius. This brilliant album presents Holland in somewhat unusual setting, with a quartet comprising of US musicians: saxophonist Steve ColemanFind albums by this artist, guitarist Kevin EubanksFind albums by this artist and drummer Marvin SmithFind albums by this artist, which means that the music includes a certain measure of Funk, which is not what Holland´s music is associated with normally. However, the leader and the group emerge victorious (as expected), with the music being fresh and artistically perfect, not allowing the Funk to dominate it, but cleverly incorporating it within. Holland, Coleman and Eubanks contribute two compositions each, and this highly spirited and brilliantly played music is a delightful musical experience. Superb stuff!

DAVE HOLLAND ~ UNCHARTED TERRITORIES
DARE2 010 (Barcode: 634457860728) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is a brilliant 2CD album by legendary British Jazz bassist / composer Dave HollandFind albums by this artist released on his own Dare2Find albums on this label label. He invited another British veteran, saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist and two much younger American Jazz players, pianist Craig TabornFind albums by this artist and drummer Ches SmithFind albums by this artist to take part in a spontaneous two-day recording session, which resulted in six hours or recorded music, of which twenty-three tracks appearing here were selected. Only three of the tracks were composed, two by Smith and one by Holland, and the rest are spontaneously improvised pieces.

As expected, the performances are all stellar, and contrary to the fears and reservations many people might hold against Free Jazz / Improvised Music, the result is completely audible and even likeable by most Jazz listeners, with just a bit of openness and slack / patience require to absorb this complex, but completely coherent music. Both the veterans and the “youngsters” display phenomenal improvising skills, mutual respect and telepathic communication with the other players, which is immediately apparent from the very first notes played.

As usual in these circumstances, the four musicians create all possible variations of solo, duo, trio and quartet involvement, which change constantly, and create streams of musical passages, that sound very melodic, even if no solid melody is actually present.

Overall, this is brilliant example of what Free Jazz / Improvised Music should sound like, which in reality happens extremely rarely. There is no one moment of cacophony or chaos on this album, in contrast to so many other albums in this genre, and as such it is truly exemplary and outstanding. Even if Improvising Music is not your cup of tea, do yourself a favor and try this one, which should be able to convince anybody of the true nature of the beast. Absolutely not to be missed!

JOËLLE LÉANDRE / BARRE PHILLIPS ~ A L`IMPROVISTE
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 16 (Barcode: 634479752964) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008

French bassist Joëlle LéandreFind albums by this artist is one of a relatively few women pioneers on the Free Jazz and Improvised Music scene to earn a legendary status. Her activities on the scene have brought her in contact with the most distinguished performers, both European and American (such as Anthony BraxtonFind albums by this artist). She also worked in the field of contemporary Classical music with composers like Pierre BoulezFind albums by this artist and John CageFind albums by this artist. Her partner for this recording is no other than another bass virtuoso – American born (but living in France since the early 1970s) Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist, one of the most esteemed Free Jazz and Improvised Music players, with a career stretching back to the 1960s and cooperation with such great musicians like John SurmanFind albums by this artist, Derek BaileyFind albums by this artist, Paul BleyFind albums by this artist and many others. His ECM album with Dave HollandFind albums by this artistMusic From Two BassesFind albums with this title” was the first bass duo recording (1971), which brings us to this superb duet. Excellently recorded by the French Radio, the music is a completely improvised set, full of beautiful conversations and exchanges between the players, who display almost telepathic contact. Full of deep feeling and lyricism, but always inspired by the fire and passion for the music, the duo performs some incredible music, which although demanding, is most enjoyable. It is a great example of how Improvised Music can stay being Avant-Garde in nature, but become mature and technically flawless. Highly recommended to lovers of acoustic bass and challenging musical experiences.

CHARLES LLOYD ~ VOICE IN THE NIGHT
ECM 1674 (Barcode: 731455944525) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1999

Legendary US saxophonist / composer Charles LloydFind albums by this artist continues his quest, now in the fifth decade of his activity, building up a legendary status as one of the most talented and original Jazz Masters. His accumulative legacy as a recording artist is truly immense, ranging from Bebop to Free, but his unique voicing and extraordinary sensitivity, both as a player and a composer, set him aside from most. Lloyd resumed his recording activity in the late 1980s on the ECMFind albums on this label label, where he released a series of wonderful albums, this one being a prime example of his abilities. The quartet consists of US guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist, British bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and US drummer Billy HigginsFind albums by this artist. Together they perform six original compositions by Lloyd and two standards, all of which are truly moving. There is little need to encourage anybody to try this out, as people, who understand Jazz, already are more that convinced. Brilliant stuff!

Christopher  Brice
Very interesting interplay between Lloyd and Abercrombie, so that the guitarist merges more than usual with the other lead, and does not stick always to the trade mark Abercrombie style, sounding sometimes like Wes Montgomery and occasionally almost like Mark Knopfler!

ANDY MIDDLETON ~ NOMAD`S NOTEBOOK
INTUITION 3264 (Barcode: 750447326422) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1999

This is the third album as a leader by American (resident in Vienna) saxophonist / composer Andy MiddletonFind albums by this artist recorded with a superb team of musicians including legendary American guitarist / pianist / composer Ralph TownerFind albums by this artist, no less legendary British bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and American (resident in US and Germany) drummer Alan JonesFind albums by this artist. Three guest musicians play on selected tracks. The album presents nine tracks, five of which are original compositions by Middleton, one is his arrangement of two traditional melodies, and three are original compositions by Towner.

The music is modern Jazz with some World Music influences, stunningly performed by these world-class musicians. The superb compositions by Middleton and Towner, full of deeply melodic and highly aesthetic contents, allow individual members to solo extensively and produce a harmonious ensemble sound all around. The Word Music influences create as ambience of mystique and the album offers a truly wonderful musical journey.

For Towner and Holland followers, this album, probably unknown to most, is certainly worth seeking out, as it presents them both at their absolute best. Of course Middleton also plays wonderfully here and the album is still absolutely fresh, even though it was recorded over two decades ago.

On a personal note; I met Andy in person a few years ago and we have had opportunity to meet regularly since during an annual event, which in time developed into a friendship. It took me a while to get hold of this album, which is not an easy task, but apparently not an impossible one – so get hold of a copy as long as it is possible!

KUBA PLUZEK ~ ELEVEN SONGS
V 007 (Barcode: 5903111377069) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015

This is the second album by young Polish Jazz pianist / composer Kuba PluzekFind albums by this artist and his first solo piano outing. It presents, as the title suggests, eleven "songs", or rather compositions, treated in a very melodic way, two of which are his own compositions and the remaining nine are by Polish (Zbigniew WegehauptFind albums by this artist, Andrzej KurylewiczFind albums by this artist) and other (Brad MehldauFind albums by this artist, Michel PetruccianiFind albums by this artist, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist) Jazz musicians / composers or by non-Jazz cinematic composers (Hans ZimmerFind albums by this artist, Luis BacalovFind albums by this artist).

From the very first notes of this album it becomes immediately apparent that Pluzek justifies all the high hopes expressed as a result of his debut album a couple of years earlier. His technique and touch are completely fluid and seamless, which is quite exceptional at his age. His choice of material seems to be no less intelligent and sophisticated than the actual performance, creating a roundness and sense of continuity, which only a few solo piano albums are able to achieve.

The piano playing style Pluzek utilizes on this album is based on extended continuous left hand arpeggios and the right hand stating the melody lines and chord progressions, which is somewhat similar to early Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist solo piano work, and is equally effective. His ability to play around with the tempi and producing a wide range of dynamic shifts is also impressive.

But beyond the technical facets of his playing, Pluzek expresses a beautiful lyricism and romance, which only the greatest piano players are blessed with. His interpretation of the classic ballad "Danny Boy", which has been performed countless times before, is a case in point. The entire experience of listening to this album is full of straightforward joy of music and of life, a rare moment of pure pleasure, which leaves the listener relaxed and deeply satisfied once the journey is over.

Although this is one of the first Polish Jazz albums of 2015, it is already pretty sure to become one of the contenders of the annual competition of top albums for this year. Definitely a commendable successor to the exceptional debut, this album is everything a piano solo album is supposed to be – a spiritual experience!

RAY RUSSELL QUARTET ~ THE COMPLETE SPONTANEOUS EVENT
JAZZ IN BRITAIN 74 (Barcode: 5060774190814) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 - 1969 Released: 2024

This is a live archival album by British Jazz guitarist / composer / bandleader Ray RussellFind albums by this artist. It collects five live BBC radio broadcasts recorded by Russell and his quartet between 1967 and 1969, with pianists Roy FryFind albums by this artist or Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, bassists Dave HollandFind albums by this artist or Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Alan RushtonFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents twenty tracks, seventeen of which are original compositions by Russell, one is by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, one by Charles LloydFind albums by this artist and one is a standard. The sound quality of the recordings is brilliant, and hard to believe these recordings were done almost sixty years ago. A few of these tracks were released on an LP in 2000, the early days of the fabulous Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, and now the complete material is available, for which all British Jazz fans are eternally grateful.

Russell is undoubtedly one of the great silent heroes of the British Jazz scene, rarely in the limelight but continuously active behind the scenes, an author of countless compositions and extensive work as composer of soundtracks for films and TV, a sought after session player with myriad of albums he plays on, but sadly with rather limited recorded legacy as a leader. Most of his albums as a leader originate from the late 1960s and early 1970s, including those by the brilliant Brass Rock ensemble Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, which he led. Therefore, this excellent album is even more important to portray his contributions.

The music on this album is stylistically quite “well behaved”, as far as the melodic compositions are concerned, strongly rooted in the Jazz tradition, before Russell moved into the more Fusion oriented pathway. His guitar work is absolutely brilliant, displaying his total control of the instrument and stunning technique, continuity and flow. These were pivotal times for the new modern British Jazz scene, where the essence of the new British feel, elegance, sophistication and unique esthetics were forged, which this album portrays splendidly. In retrospect there were very few guitar players in UK at the time, of such class and proficiency.

Overall, this is another “bull’s eye” release by Jazz In Britain, which just keeps the juices of the British Jazz history fans flowing, by unearthing such marvelous treasures from the past. Meticulously researched, offering best possible sound quality and most importantly digging deep into the archives, spearing no efforts to bring us the music, this is a true labor of love. Personally this is one of the strongest releases on the label, although everything they release is worth having. Thank you!

They are: “IlluminationsFind albums with this title” (1974), “Oneness: Silver Dreams - Golden RealtyFind albums with this title” (1979) and “The Swing Of DelightFind albums with this title” (1980). A short chant by Chinmoy is the album’s opening track.

“Oneness: Silver Dreams - Golden Realty” presents fifteen relatively short compositions, most composed by Carlos Santana and is performed by a large group of musicians, including many Santana (the group) members. The first six tracks were recorded live and the rest were recorded in the studio.

“The Swing Of Delight”, originally a double LP, presents nine compositions performed by a large group of top Jazz musicians, including Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Ron CarterFind albums by this artist, Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist and many others.

These three albums together with the a.m. “Love Devotion Surrender” album present some of the most spiritual and deeply Jazz influenced music that Carlos Santana created during his long-lasting career. The mixture of Indian spirituality, which he shared with many Jazz musicians at the time, and extensive / hypnotic Jazz improvisations are in retrospect some of his best achievements, and deserve to be cherished and remembered.

This is a colossal career-spanning archival 6CD Box Set by British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, which presents recordings between 1961 and 2019, documenting almost six decades of music making by one of British Jazz most prominent figures. Although most of the music was played by ensembles led by Skidmore, it also includes his work with Alexis KornerFind albums by this artist´s Blues IncorporatedFind albums by this artist, S.O.S.Find albums by this artist and S.O.H.Find albums by this artist trios, UbizoFind albums by this artist, Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist and even Weather ReportFind albums by this artist. Most of the music was composed by Skidmore, but, as the title suggests, a significant portion of it was composed by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, with Skidmore admitting to being his devoted disciple. A vast majority of the 46 tracks included in this Box Set are previously unissued.

Over the years Skidmore played with the absolute crème de la crème of the modern British Jazz musicians, including John SurmanFind albums by this artist, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist, John TaylorFind albums by this artist, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and many others, as well as many pioneering European and American Jazz musicians.

The music is presented chronologically and beautifully illustrates the gradual metamorphosis of Skidmore from Blues and mainstream Jazz player towards more adventurous areas towards the exploration of Free and Avant-Garde Jazz, which occurred by the end of the 1960s. The last two CDs are dedicated to the exploration of the music of John Coltrane, including a live performance at the legendary Café OTO from 2019 on CD6.

The music is of course brilliant from start to finish, and the release of this Box Set is a truly festive occasion to hear so much music previously hidden from the public ear, all of which is essential to every true British Jazz fan around the globe. The level of the performances is stellar of course, with Skidmore displaying his amazing technique and passion, which obviously are old news for any British Jazz follower, but appear herein in their full might and splendor. Thank God for the depth of Skidmore’s private archives, which made this Box Set possible, and perhaps those might be reexamined in order to find more of such treasures? Of course thanks to Mark WastellFind albums by this artist, the owner of ConfrontFind albums on this label Recordings, for making this dream come true.

Overall, this is an absolutely essential piece of British Jazz history, with hours upon hours of brilliant music, which sees the light of day for the first time. It presents the development of the British / European Jazz scene from the perspective of just one of its many heroes, but considering the incredible gathering of musicians who play on these tracks, it becomes way more than just a story of one man, as important as he might be thanks to his own achievements, constituting in fact a reflection of an Era.

The music is mostly oriented towards Free Jazz, but Stanko´s intrinsic sense of melody and immense lyricism overpowers the free form and becomes the leading force, pushing the music effortlessly and magically into a mystic plane, full of sounds and intermitting silences, which create a gentle, deeply emotional vistas. The interplay between all the quartet members is simply incredible and the resulting music sounds as if created by one collective body and mind. This is undoubtedly on the finest moments of Jazz ever recorded and an essential piece of music, timeless and everlasting!

I definitely agree with Adam`s "essential" label on this one. But look out for Stanko`s "From the Green Hill" with John Surman and others - even better IMHO

MIKE STERN ~ ALL OVER THE PLACE
HEADS UP 33186 ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2011 - 2012 Released: 2012

Some musicians simply can´t go wrong, and guitarist / composer Mike SternFind albums by this artist is certainly one of them. Decades of superb performances, composing and recording albums produced an incredible volume of music, which is always first rate and stays fresh, vibrant and eternally uplifting. This, his 17th album as a leader, is another of those wonderful albums that are simply perfect in what they are. It includes eleven new Stern original compositions, performed by an incredible all star band and guest artists, which reads like the who´s who of American Jazz and Fusion.

In time Stern managed to work out a formula, which works perfectly. His compositions combine great melodies with catchy licks and funky groove, but maintain incredibly high aesthetic standard and intelligent arrangements. The level of musicianship and stellar performances make the entire package irresistible. Stern´s Fusion is always an amalgam of the good old Blues roots with modern electric Funk and of course deep respect for the Jazz tradition.

The list of the performers on this album is really very long, so here are just a few of the better known names: trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Kenny GarrettFind albums by this artist and Bob MalachFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jim BeardFind albums by this artist, bassists Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist, Will LeeFind albums by this artist and Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, drummers Dave WecklFind albums by this artist and Al FosterFind albums by this artist and many others. His wife, guitarist Leni SternFind albums by this artist, also makes a rare guest appearance.

Fusion enthusiasts and Stern fans alike need absolutely no encouragement to grab this gem immediately. If anybody on this planet is still unfamiliar with his music, perhaps now is the time to remedy the situation. This album smokes!

JOHN SURMAN ~ JOHN SURMAN
VOCALION 8402 (Barcode: 765387840228) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2005

Saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist is a true icon of the British / European Jazz scene for over four decades. The immense body of work Surman produced over the years, starting with his numerous UK recordings in the late 1960s and 1970s and then through his association with the German ECMFind albums on this label label, reflect the absolute pinnacle of European Jazz. John’s incredible improvisational ability and masterly technique on several reed instruments made him a most welcome contributor to scores of pivotal albums recorded in the formative years of British modern Jazz, with such illustrious names as Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist (ExtrapolationFind albums with this title) and many others. His work is always characterized by pioneering achievements, embracing new technology and new musical forms and constantly changing, like a true musical chameleon. This album is his debut as a leader and might come as quite a surprise to listeners, who are familiar with his more contemporary works. The album presents two quite distinctive sides of his musical personality at the time, appropriately divided between what used to be Side A and Side B of the original LP. Surman plays the baritone saxophone exclusively on this album, demonstrating his command of the instrument. On Side A he leads a sextet with Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (his close associate at the time) – alto sax and Harry MillerFind albums by this artist – bass, exploring some Caribbean / calypso rhythms and playing music not composed by himself (Sonny RollinsFind albums by this artist is the composer of one of the four tracks). On Side B the ensemble is expanded to an eleven-piece band, including Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist – trumpets, Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist – trombones, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist – bass, Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist – drums and others. The music is a wonderful three-piece suite composed by Surman, a prime example of the British modern Jazz, with superb solos and free-form passages, culminating in a powerful big band orgy of sound. Definitely something any Surman fan will be happy to add to his collection and a beautiful piece of the puzzle representing Surman’s musical legacy.

This brilliant 2CD set includes two early recordings by British saxophone colossus John SurmanFind albums by this artist, which document his early career in the pioneering European Free Jazz and Jazz-Rock movements, both released on the legendary DawnFind albums on this label label. COLIN WALCOTT ~ CLOUD DANCE
ECM 1062 (Barcode: 602517799295) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2008

This wonderful and by now Classic album by US sitar / tabla player Colin WalcottFind albums by this artist, founding member of the legendary OregonFind albums by this artist and CodonaFind albums by this artist ensembles, was recorded in the company of the excellent trio led by guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist with bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist, which recorded the "GatewayFind albums with this title" album at the same period. A veteran pioneer of Jazz-World Fusion, Walcott redefined the genre with this recording, expanding the borders of improvisation and inter-genre fusion well beyond anything previously encountered. His tragic death in a car accident during the European tour of Oregon cut his incredible career short, which makes this recording even more important, if such thing is possible at all. Of the eight compositions present on this album Walcott composed five and co-composed two more with Abercrombie; the remaining one was composed by Holland, who plays some incredible bass on this album. In retrospect this remains to be one of the best early ECMFind albums on this label releases, which deserves to be heard by every serious Jazz-World Fusion connoisseur. Brilliant stuff!

KENNY WHEELER ~ ANGEL SONG
ECM 1607 (Barcode: 731453309821) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1996 Released: 1997

This is a painfully beautiful album by British trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, one the most creative and artistically perfect Jazz musicians on this planet. Here in a drum-less quartet with veteran US saxophonist Lee KonitzFind albums by this artist, guitarist Bill FrisellFind albums by this artist and British genius bass player Dave HollandFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine new original compositions by Wheeler, all quite lyrical and exquisitely melodic, as always. It is very interesting to hear Konitz and Frisell play here in a serene and somewhat subdued way, contrary to their usual expressive and more energetic approach. Holland is truly amazing, taking the rhythmic duties all upon him and still managing to add some melody lines as well. This is angelic music indeed, in every respect, a perfect piece of music from start to finish and a must to any serious Jazz connoisseur. Wholeheartedly recommended!

KENNY WHEELER ~ MUSIC FOR LARGE & SMALL ENSEMBLES
ECM 1415/16 (Barcode: 042284315227) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1990 Released: 1990

Trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist has been one of the great pillars of the British and international Jazz scene for five consecutive decades. His role as one of the most creative protagonists of the British / European Jazz revolution in the 1960s / 1970s was invaluable, but Wheeler continued his seemingly endless streak of creativity into the 21st Century, staying relevant and up to date, with very few rivaling forces of his magnitude. This album, in retrospect, is in many respects a pinnacle of his recording career and firmly belongs to the exclusive club of the top Jazz recordings of all time. Wheeler present here some of his best and most ambitious compositions, both as a composer for a large Jazz orchestra and a small Jazz combo, like the quintet featured here. The list of names of the participating musicians – all 19 of them – reads like the who´s who of modern British Jazz with a couple of American guests (guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist) added for good measure. Pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, his wife the divine vocalist Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, trombonist Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist are just the more familiar of these names. The music is of course heavenly, regardless of the large or small format, both melodically, harmonically and structurally. Wheeler emerges as a Master composer and bandleader and the resulting music is a source of immense pleasure, both aesthetically and intellectually. This is a masterpiece and an essential piece of music, which is a worthy addition to any serious music library. Beyond essential!

Truly (and surprisingly) "Essential"; I generally avoid large ensembles, but this is different as the individual voices of the specific participants were planned for and can be clearly heard

KENNY WHEELER ~ WINDMILL TILTER
BGO 0944 (Barcode: 5017261209443) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2010

Canadian-born trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist arrived in London in 1952 and soon found himself emerged in the lively local Jazz scene. Playing with many different ensembles active at the time, he slowly earned the position of the country´s most respected, reliable and talented Jazz player. By the end of the 1950s Wheeler started an association with saxophonist /composer / bandleader Johnny DankworthFind albums by this artist, playing in his various ensembles, which would last for the next decade. In 1968 Dankworth suggested to Wheeler that he´d used a three months period of recovery from a surgery to compose a suite for a Jazz group and orchestra, a suggestion Wheeler accepted with open hands. The result was the magnificent piece of music presented here, based on the tragic story of Don Quixote. Performed by a quintet, which comprised of Wheeler, saxophonist / clarinetist Tony CoeFind albums by this artist, guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer John SpoonerFind albums by this artist and the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra, this milestone of British Jazz remains every bit as much relevant today as it was at the time of its recording. Similar in spirit to the Miles DavisFind albums by this artist / Gil EvansFind albums by this artist classic "Sketches Of SpainFind albums with this title", the suite firmly establishes Wheeler´s position as a major player on the global Jazz scene, which of course was reaffirmed time and again in years to come. This reissue, long time overdue, brings back to life an incredible treasure and listening to it makes life worth living!
