JURGEN FRIEDRICH ~ SUMMERFLOOD
CTI 4011220018214 (Barcode: 4011220018214) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1998

This is the debut album by German Jazz pianist / composer Jurgen FriedrichFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quartet, which also includes saxophonist Claudius ValkFind albums by this artist, bassist Volker HeinzeFind albums by this artist and British drummer Darren BeckettFind albums by this artist, expanded to a quintet by the presence of the iconic British trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions, all by the leader.

Friedrich, who studied with British pianist / composer John TaylorFind albums by this artist, was introduced by Taylor to the music of Wheeler, which made a great impact on his musical outlook, and when he planned the recording of this, his debut album, he asked Wheeler to participate.

If subjected to a blindfold test, the music sounds remarkably alike a British Jazz album, and with the first note uttered by Wheeler, it becomes completely recognizable and “familiar”. This does not mean, of course, that the young musicians participating in the recording are copying anything. After all the music is completely original and wonderfully weaved and the playing is highly inspired. It only exemplifies the influence that iconic musicians like Taylor and Wheeler were able pass down to the young generation of musicians, at least at the early stages of their careers.

I was completely unaware of this album until a few weeks ago and of course grabbed it immediately to complete my Wheeler discography, but it turned out to be a beautiful piece of music, which is definitely worth getting familiar with, on top of the fact that Wheeler plays several outstanding and spine-chilling solos on this album.

Overall, this is a remarkable debut as well as a sublime piece of Wheeler’s recording legacy, which should not be missed by his many followers. I am not familiar with later musical explorations by Friedrich, but judging by what this album has to offer, they are definitely worthy of exploring. In short, this is a true gem that lost nothing of its sparkle over time.

FREDDIE HUBBARD ~ RED CLAY
CTI 505172 ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970

Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist is one of the greatest American trumpet players with a long and distinguished list of acheivements. Hubbard signed with CTIFind albums on this label in 1970 and recorded several albums for the label, which are considered by many among the best material he ever recorded. This is his debut for the label and features him in an quintet setting, with Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist (piano), Joe HendersonFind albums by this artist (sax - another legendary player), Ron CarterFind albums by this artist (bass) and Lenny WhiteFind albums by this artist (drums). The material is very strong, mostly hard-bop with some funk overtones. In retrospect this does sound as good today as it did when first released.

This is Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist`s 3rd album on the CTIFind albums on this label label with the same players (more or less) as the two previous albums, except this time accompanied by an orchestra (which also includes many famous jazz players, like Hubert LawsFind albums by this artist). LARRY CORYELL ~ I`LL BE OVER YOU
CTI 67238 (Barcode: 024646723826) ~ USA ~ Smooth Jazz

Recorded: 1994 Released: 1995

This is an album by American Jazz / Fusion guitarist / composer Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, the third of the three albums he recorded for the CTIFind albums on this label label owned by producer Creed TaylorFind albums by this artist. The album features a large team of musicians, including vocalist Peabo BrysonFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chuck LoebFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr.Find albums by this artist, bassist Will LeeFind albums by this artist, drummer Steve FerroneFind albums by this artist and many others. The album presents eleven tracks, most of which are arrangements of Soul songs with some original contributions by Coryell.

This album was undoubtedly Coryell’s most commercial album ever, almost completely outside of his usual Jazz / Fusion environment. The title song even enjoyed some chart success. Obviously Coryell was convinced to try his commercial luck by the producer, and thank God the album was not a success, with Coryell retuning to playing Jazz.

Having said that the album offers some great acoustic guitar licks, which show his true skills. The production and performances by all the musicians involved are as perfect as slick, commercial music allows.

Overall, this is a short stunt with commercial music by one of the greatest guitar players of all times, which can be easily forgiven, and perhaps forgotten as well. It is listenable at all? Well, if you’re in a mood for a smoothie, it certainly is.

Upon leaving BJH in 1979 Woolly embarked on a solo career that saw an album release in 1980, `Maestoso`. Adopting this name for his new band, Wolstenholme embarked on the recording of a second solo album that was to have been called `Black Box`. DJAM KARET ~ COLLABORATOR
HC PRODUCTIONS 008 (Barcode: 796086000828) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1994 Released: 1994

A very ambitious and groundbreaking project by Djam Karet, which realizes for the first time the concept of co-composing and co-recording music by different artists, without the need of physical contact. The members of the band asked seven musician friends (Kit Watkins, Steve Roach and others) to compose and record pieces of music and then send the recorded music to them. The band then recorded their contributions on top of the existing music and thus created a collaboration project. The resulting music is a dense, complex and intricate matrix of sounds, often dark and depressing, but always fascinating. Obviously this music would be more interesting to listeners of ambient / contemporary classical listeners than the average Prog fan, but people with open minds (and ears) should find here a treasure chest of lasting musical challenges.

The album reflects just one of the many sides of Djam Karet’s music of course, the spontaneous, improvised, free-spirited side. This is the long overdue reissue of Djam KaretFind albums by this artist’s debut album, which was originally released only on cassette and sees the first release on CD only almost 20 years later. The highly improvised music played by the band was released under the ironic title No Commercial PotentialFind albums with this title, a commonly known phrase used by the Music Industry executives to describe music which is not compliant with the formula for making money on the charts. Djam Karet well understood that the kind of intellectual, free-spirited and quality music they perform has obviously very little appeal to the Music Industry moguls, and therefore decided from the very beginning to produce and release their music independently, which they still continue to do to this very day. The original debut album is released here on CD 1, which is paired with another recording of freely improvised rock music on CD 2, recorded 17 years later, during the A Night For BakuFind albums with this title sessions. This is the eighteenth album by American Prog group Djam KaretFind albums by this artist, founded in 1984, which still manages to produce meaningful music within the genre that is mostly obsolete today, following the second phase of its existence. The lineup on this album features all four founding members of the group: guitarist / keyboardist Gayle EllettFind albums by this artist (who plays on all tracks), guitarist Mike HendersonFind albums by this artist (who plays only on a couple of tracks), bassist Henry J. OsborneFind albums by this artist (who plays on six tracks) and drummer Chuck Oken, Jr.Find albums by this artist (who plays on all tracks). Guitarist Mike MurrayFind albums by this artist and bassist Aaron KenyonFind albums by this artist play on selected tracks. The album presents ten relatively short pieces (surely by Prog standards), all co-credit to the entire group.

The music, as the title suggests, is more ambient oriented than the standard Prog ventures, following the quite popular concept of "soundtrack to an imaginary movie", which deals more with "impressionist sound painting" than with actual melody, harmony and rhythm approach, which appears here only occasionally. Not being committed to the usual conceptual limitations of Prog, the music can be interpreted quite freely, depending largely on the listener´s state of mind and his imagination.

There is enough diversity in this music to keep the listener interested and anticipating the next move, assuming the listener is a priori open to ambient music, which develops slowly and lacks catchy hooks, which most Prog listeners are expecting, being totally addicted to them. On the other hand it seems that after thirty-three years of playing and recording music, the group is showing early signs of lassitude, at least in comparison to their early days. One might wonder if this might be the final opus.

Overall this is definitely an album worth investigating, especially for ambient Prog lovers, which offers a musical journey of imagination. Fans expecting fiery endless guitar solos and other Prog nonsense will be disappointed.

DJAM KARET ~ A SKY FULL OF STARS FOR A ROOF
HC PRODUCTIONS 019A (Barcode: 747014631423) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2017 - 2019 Released: 2019

This is the nineteenth album by the American Prog group Djam KaretFind albums by this artist, which marks the group´s thirty-fifth Anniversary. The group still includes the four founding members: guitarists Gayle EllettFind albums by this artist and Mike HendersonFind albums by this artist, bassist Henry J. OsborneFind albums by this artist and drummer Chuck Oken, Jr.Find albums by this artist Several guest players appear on selected tracks. The album presents eight original compositions, collectively credited to the group.

Musically this album expands the ambient influences that dominated the previous album "Sonic CelluloidFind albums with this title" and moves even further away from the "classic" Prog idiom into the field of sonic explorations with a tad of World Music influences and Minimal Music aesthetics, which adds up to what might be described as soundtrack material for imaginary movies. There are many wonderfully melodic moments and the relaxed, laid back atmosphere of the proceedings set a dreamy "out of time" mood.

I have been following Djam Karet over the years since their inception and it´s really great to see that they make a continuous effort to stay apart from the Prog "mainstream" from day one. This consistency is as important as the group´s musical inventiveness. In fact for listeners for whom this might be the first encounter with Djam Karet, most would probably not associate the group with their Prog roots at all.

Personally I have enjoyed this music very much and had a most enjoyable listening experience, simply by letting myself to become completely immersed in the music. It is a kind of music that would probably sound differently every time, depending of the mindset of the listener, which of course does not happen too often.

Overall this is another successful step in the long history of one of the most unique American bands, which is one of the very few who still have something meaningful to say. Well done Gentlemen!

LOPEZ & KADZIELA ~ AUGMENTATION
JAZZ ACTIVIST 05 (Barcode: 8428353600524) ~ SPAIN ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is the debut album by the young European quartet co-led by Spanish (Galician) drummer Carlos LopezFind albums by this artist and Polish saxophonist Maciej KadzielaFind albums by this artist, with Spanish (well, Galician again) pianist Xan CamposFind albums by this artist and Swedish bassist Johannes VahtFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, four composed by Lopez, three by Kadziela and one by Vaht.

The music is a wonderful example of young contemporary European Jazz, full of vigor and flare, based on melodic compositions but including an extensive degree of freedom, which enables novel improvisation and unexpected time signatures. The melodies are well structures and coherent harmonically, diverse stylistically and often include World Music influences, with some Iberian motifs clearly distinguishable.

The individual performances are all excellent, as expected form these well schooled and already quite experienced musicians. Fiery and inspired soloing and superb team work contribute to the overall result, which is a genuine pleasure to listen to.

Although most of these ensembles are created ad hoc in the burgeoning environment created at the Copenhagen´s Rhythmic Music Conservatory, where many excellent European musicians study, hopefully this quartet will come together to record and tour, as it is unquestionably too good to be a one time affair.

Definitely worth investigation and highly recommended for modern European Jazz connoisseurs!

This is a showcase of his skills as a player and improviser and an important document of the local scene.

HAROLD RUBIN / JEAN CLAUDE JONES ~ MUSE & MUSIC
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 03 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005

This album documents the musical / spiritual meeting between the two leaders of the Israeli improvised music scene. Harold RubinFind albums by this artist started the movement on the late 1980’s, after his legendary group ZaviotFind albums by this artist disbanded, leading a long series of ensembles active in the Tel-Aviv area, where he lives. Jean Claude JonesFind albums by this artist (or J.C. to his friends) arrived on the scene at about the same time, playing with another legendary group KedmaFind albums by this artist (both Zaviot and Kedma released their albums on JazzisFind albums on this label Records). Later on Jones played with many different ensembles in the Jerusalem area, where he lives, and founded the Kadima CollectiveFind albums on this label – an association of improvising artists (cross-genre), which now independently releases various projects on record. Their path crossed many times over the years but they somehow failed to record together and this much overdue album puts things right at last. The intimate duo of clarinet and electro acoustic bass is the foundation of the music, with Harold reciting / voicing his poetry on top and Jones adding live electronics occasionally, all of those based on musical telepathy and interplay between the creators. This is intense stuff, requiring total attentiveness and open-mindedness, but for people who are willing to stretch out their intellectual muscles the rewards are infinite. Sadly, there is very little music of such quality being made anywhere in the wold these days.

JOSEF SPRINZAK / JEAN CLAUDE JONES ~ THE WORLD IS ROUND
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 04 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Both Sprinzak & Jones are members of the Kadima Collective - an umbrella organization of Israeli musicians formed to promote Free Improvised Music in Israel. Members originate from variety of music genres, i.e. classical , jazz & rock. Their work includes collaborations with poets and vocal artists. This album is an excellent example of such collaboration. Jones plays bass and electronics and Sprinzak delivers some amazing vocals, based on a story by Gertrude Stein. His artistic language is based on breaking words into syllables, using breathing techniques and extreme vocal production. The result is a kind of music played by the instrument of language. This is something for the more advaturous music lovers, avant-heads and people who enjoy a musical challenge.

GAN LEV ~ LANGUAGES
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 05 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005

Gan Lev is a renowned Israeli saxophonist. He is a graduate of the Manness College of Music in NY and studied in various European music Academies. An accomplished classical player he is a member of the Israeli Philharmonic, but his real love is jazz and improvised music. On this album he cooperates with bassist Jean Claude Jones, founder of the Kadima Collective. Playing a wide rage of saxophones (soprano, alto & baritone) Lev displays his exceptional technique and deep feel for the music. The duo performs 17 (mostly short) pieces, varying from clearly composed to totally improvised music. For the fans of the genre this is something to savor. It is heartwarming to see such unconventional and challenging music being released on record, thanks to the Kadima Collective initiative, well done!

ARIEL LANYI ~ 31 BARS
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 07 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

1st album by Israeli Jazz prodigy Ariel LanyiFind albums by this artist. It is extremely difficult to write anything about this album due to the fact that it probably is the most sensational jazz recording ever, considering the fact that Ariel was only 8 years old (YES EIGHT) when this music was recorded. Of course there are a few well-known piano prodigies in music’s history, but surely none of these played improvised music and free jazz. Ariel plays classical piano since the age of 4 and discovered jazz accidentally (at the tender age of 7) by pressing an Earl Hines link on the Net. He started to take lessons with Jean Claude JonesFind albums by this artist, leader of the Kadima Collective (a group of Israeli musicians dedicated to improvised music) and soon was discovered to possess exceptional gift for improvisation and a musical attitude of a matured musician. The music included here was recorded on several occasions live and in the studio during the months proceeding his 9th Birthday, when this album was released. The album contains mostly Ariel’s original compositions and improvisations, primarily because composition, free improvisation and Avant-Garde are the main attraction of jazz for him. The few standards that appear here are substantially altered, as appropriate for his genre. Some of the pieces are solo piano performances, others are duos with Israel’s most important improvisers (all of which could easily be Ariel’s grandfathers), like Harold RubinFind albums by this artist (clarinet), Jess KorenFind albums by this artist (sax), Jerry GarvalFind albums by this artist (drums) and Jean Claude Jones (bass). Whatever the starting point of each piece, they all show Ariel’s enthusiasm for free improvisation and his unique mixing of styles, ideas and influences. One thing is sure; nobody in this world would guess, by listening to this music without the knowledge of the facts, that this is a kid. The music is completely mature and exceptionally developed. It’s almost scary to imagine what this kid will be up to in a few years? Check it out for yourself!

JEAN CLAUDE JONES ~ HOSTING MYSELF
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 08 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 - 2006 Released: 2006

Jean Claude Jones is the leader and the driving force of the Kadima Collective, a group of Israeli musicians who practice free improvisations as their primary musical habitat. The Kadima Collective record label releases albums, which would have never seen the light of day in any commercial environment. This album is a perfect example of such a release. Jones recorded this album all by himself using only his bass and some electronic devices to create all the sounds. The music is all freely improvised of course and therefore completely adventitious, yet it makes perfect sense to a listener, who is ready to engage in the creative process with the Artist. The album includes only 3 tracks: The first and third tracks are excerpts of a live recording Jones made while the dancer Julyen Hamilton performed an improvised dance to his music. The second track (over 32 minutes long) is composed of 18 shorter episodes recorded in the studio over a period of several months. This is a bold and well-articulated statement by a seasoned and determined Artist, who remains restless and adventurous at all times. For listeners with positively opened ears only.

ARIEL SHIBOLET ~ UNTITLED (1959)
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 09 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

This album brings together the Jerusalem based Kadima Collective member saxophonist Ariel Shibolet with four Bay Area Californians (Aurora Josephson – vocals, Jen Baker – trombone, Scott R. Looney – piano and Damon Smith – bass). The players got together one afternoon and performed the music captured here without any preparations in advance. “Natural, home-brewed, organic music” is what Shibolet calls it, and so it is. Of course the five players, being all free improvisers and familiar with the concept of spontaneity had no problem finding a common language creating music together. The result is quite surprising, presenting a wide range of musical concepts and interplay, all within the free jazz / contemporary improvised music vein. All track titles were given names of paintings by the great American artist Mark Rothko and the portraits of the players were drawn by Aurora – a nice touch pointing out the close relationship of different aspects of Art and Culture. Adventurous music for adventurous listeners.

HAROLD RUBIN ~ ONE VOICE
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 10 (Barcode: 634479548291) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2007

If it wasn’t for the fact that Harold RubinFind albums by this artist (musician, painter and poet) lives and creates music in Israel, I’m pretty sure that he would have become one of the best-known icons of Avant-Garde jazz worldwide. Since I “discovered” Harold 20 years ago, he never ceased to amaze me every time I hear him play live or hear any of his recorded music. His absolutely unique approach to his instrument – the clarinet – and to music in general is phenomenal and in spite of his advanced age he is (to me) one of the most vigorous, adventurous and daring musicians on this planet. Although usually described as a free jazz player, his music can be movingly lyrical at times. He is able to express the entire range of human emotions, from peace and bliss to frenzy and rage. I really hope more people will discover his wonderful music in time. This recording captures Harold completely on his own for the first time (He usually plays in a trio / quartet setting and sometimes in duos). There is nothing else here but the man and his clarinet – the ultimate intimacy. Harold composed all the music included here, including the five part suite “A Quiet Place for Mr. K. K.” dedicated to King Kong, which he describes as follows: “It relates to a psychotic King Kong living in our now world, where brutality has become a way of life and fragile fragments of joy alleviate a terrifying sense of sadness”. I hope Harold’s music will become your “fragments of joy” forever.
Side Note: This is a reissue of this album on the Kadima CollectiveFind albums on this label label, replacing the original release done privately by Harold, which BTW is a rare collectors´ item by now.

VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ WHITE NIGHT FESTIVAL 2006

It also fosters the development of young musicians, exposing their work to the world.

ARIEL LANYI ~ ORIGAMI: PIANO SOLO
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 12 (Barcode: 634479580017) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2007

2nd album by Israeli Jazz prodigy Ariel LanyiFind albums by this artist, 9 years old at the time this music was recorded. This time completely alone at the piano, without any guidance from his older peers, Ariel displays his exceptional talent even more forcefully then on his debut album. Out of the 10 tracks on this album, 7 are his own compositions / improvisations and just 3 are standards (by Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist, John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and John LennonFind albums by this artist / Paul McCartneyFind albums by this artist). I really don’t know what to say here, except that this is scary stuff, when a 9 years old person displays the maturity and skills worthy of a fully grown up and accomplished musician. There are no gimmicks here, none whatsoever. Just the kid, his piano and the unbelievable music he makes. There is no way on earth (or above) that anybody listening to this music blindfolded could have guessed the age of the performer. I’m not a sappy sentimentalist, who looks for divine sources for inspiration, but there must be some kind of divine intervention here at work. The stuff Ariel can do at his current age are often never achieved by people ten times older then him who played piano their entire life. I know you don’t believe me – no problem – just listen.

Ariel’s playing is deeply rooted in the tradition of the late period John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, Steve LacyFind albums by this artist and Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist, based on complete control of the instrument, virtuosity and of course relentless passion. The balance between Ariel and the string trio, as well as their cooperative group improvisation is truly inspiring. Israeli bassist and Improvised Music pioneer Jean Claude JonesFind albums by this artist revisits eleven musical pieces recorded live and in studio over a period of ten years, performing, what he calls recomposition of the pieces. In his own words: “As opposed to mere editing, recomp involves the deconstruction, subtraction, rearrangement, and reconstruction of the material. It not only changes the sequencing, but it radically affects the feeling and the flow of the music. It also changes the texture of the weave, the voice of the team, and the original intention, revealing new connections, transitions, and possibilities”. The pieces are duos and trios played with other Israeli Improvised Music musicians like Harold RubinFind albums by this artist (clarinet), Steve HorensteinFind albums by this artist (flute, bass clarinet & saxophone), Daniel HoffmanFind albums by this artist (violin) and others. One duet with world-famous Israeli bass player Avishai CohenFind albums by this artist is also included. The music bears some resemblance to musique concrete, incidental music and industrial. The album consists of a series of 13 relatively short pieces and one extended performance, with the musicians using their instruments in completely unconventional manner and the overall result is very difficult to describe, especially to people who have no experience with hard-core Avant-Garde music. IDO BUKELMAN ~ THE DOOR
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 33 (Barcode: 7290011216009) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011

This is the second solo recording by Israeli guitarist / composer Ido BukelmanFind albums by this artist, one of the most prolific musicians on the local Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene. In contrast to his ensemble recordings or those with the EFTFind albums by this artist trio, where he mostly plays electric guitar, on his solo albums Bukelman opts for the acoustic guitar, adding also banjo and some percussion on this one. Of the eleven tracks on this album, all composed by him, the last six are connected into a suite, which gives the album its title. In comparison to his previous solo album ("SoloFind albums with this title"), recorded just a few months earlier, this album is much more relaxed and "well behaved", with clear melodic content popping out between and behind the freely improvised passages. Of course this is still very much Improvised Music, very personal and complex, which presents quite a challenge to the listener, but the overall effect of this album is definitely less stressful and estranging. With four albums recorded and released in less than a year Bukelman emerges as a major talent of the local scene, one that deserves to be followed carefully, open-mindedly and openheartedly as a source of some serious musical experiences. Hopefully there will be an audience open-minded enough to enjoy and appreciate this music.

FREDDIE HUBBARD ~ THE HUB OF HUBBARD
MPS 4029759113461 (Barcode: 4029759113461) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2016

This is a reissue of an album by American trumpeter / composer Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist, which was his first of two albums for MPSFind albums on this label and which was produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. He is supported by saxophonist Eddie DanielsFind albums by this artist, pianist Roland HannaFind albums by this artist, bassist Richard DavisFind albums by this artist and drummer Louis HayesFind albums by this artist. The album presents one original composition by Hubbard and three standards.

This album marks a transition period between Hubbard´s recordings for Blue NoteFind albums on this label and AtlanticFind albums on this label, which established him as one of the top American Bebop and Hard Bop trumpeters (and to a degree a Free Jazz pioneer), and his move to CTIFind albums on this label, which marked a slightly more commercial and Fusion oriented period. This album was recorded during an informal recording session, organized by Berendt during a break in Hubbard´s European tour and the relaxed and casual atmosphere dominates the proceedings. BTW the same session also produced another album: Richard Davis´s "Muses For Richard DavisFind albums with this title".

The music is everything one might expect from the stellar lineup, i.e. superbly played mainstream American Jazz, which unfortunately introduces nothing new to the Jazz idiom per se and by the time it was recorded was already passé to some extent. Of course Hubbard and his cohorts pay their asses off and their virtuosity is hair-raising. Combined with the first-rate recording quality and the great remaster, this album is a superb example of Hard Bop at its best, full of exciting soloing and outstanding teamwork.

Lovers of mainstream American Jazz should be perfectly happy with this release, which brings this album back into circulation (although it was already reissued on CD in 1988 and 2009, but long time gone from the market).
Side Note
The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

ZBIGNIEW PREISNER / LISA GERRARD ~ IT`S NOT TOO LATE
PREISNER PRODUCTIONS 003 (Barcode: 5903111904050) ~ POLAND ~ Special Products

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022

This is a new chapter in the continuous cooperation between Polish composer Zbigniew PreisnerFind albums by this artist and Australian vocalist / composer Lisa GerrardFind albums by this artist. In addition to Gerrard’s vocals, the music is created by Preisner, who plays the Hammond organ and other instruments, pianist Dominik WaniaFind albums by this artist, cellist Magdalena PlutaFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Jerzy GlowczewskiFind albums by this artist. The vocals were recorded at the Synagogue in a small town of Bobowa in southern Poland and the instrumental parts in Preisner’s studio. The album presents nine tracks, five co-composed by Preisner and Gerrard, three composed by Preisner and one partly based on a piece from the soundtrack of the film “Man Of God”, composed by Preisner. Gerrard sings in her metaphysical language.

As usual with Preisner’s projects, the music is simply beyond classification. Obviously, considering his legacy as a cinematic composer, cinematic music comes instinctively to mind, by that would be a gross simplification, as cinematic music basically means nothing beyond music written specifically for cinema. The music on this album builds an entire universe of musical associations, encompassing Classical, Sacred, Contemplative, Ceremonial and so on, but honestly the most important is the emotional message this music is trying to convey, which offers a rainbow of sensations between deep despair and elated hope. Obviously deeply influenced by the reality of the world we live in, including the calamities of Pandemic and War, this music tries to rise a ray of hope, as the title suggests.

The music is very minimalistic, restrained and slowly developing, with an aura of a medieval piety, Jewish prayer, operatic arias and Ambient meditative vistas, led by Gerrard’s virtuosic vocals and delicately supported by instrumental passages, with occasional solos by the piano, cello or saxophone. The vocals are encircled by the sublime natural echo of the Synagogue, which inspires the very special ambience of the entire album.

Gerrard’s vocal improvisations are Godly in every respect, not surprising but always stunning anew, and combined with the music and instrumental support sound perhaps more convincing here than ever before. Both Preisner and Gerrard are natural phenomena of epic proportions, and combined here enhance and complement each other in a perfect win-win manifestation.

Overall, this is a deeply moving album and a very unique piece of music, which is completely universal, ageless and borderless musically. Created by an amalgam of great talents and deep conviction, this is an example of music which is able to move mountains. Thank you, my Friends, for the gift of music!

JAZZPOCALYPSE ~ SISYPHONIC
SAINT LOUIS JAZZ COLLECTION 017.1 (Barcode: 8032880740327) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is the second album by the quartet JazzpocalypseFind albums by this artist, which comprises of Polish saxophonist Jakub SkowronskiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Sebastian ZawadzkiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Wojciech SwiecaFind albums by this artist and German drummer Janosch PangritzFind albums by this artist, expanded to a quintet with the addition of Italian bassist Caterina PalazziFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten original compositions, two by Skowronski, three by Zawadzki, two by Swieca and three by Pangritz.

The music is typical contemporary European mainstream Jazz, with solid compositions and excellent improvisations by the ensemble members. The tunes are melody based and present diverse approaches used by the four young composers, each creating a slightly different sonic world, but with all the compositions adding up to a coherent musical kaleidoscope. Some of the tunes are pretty straightforward, some are close to Jazz-Rock Fusion, mostly due to the strong presence of the electric guitar and yet others are relatively open and feature less restrained improvisations.

The performances are all top notch, with the soloing evenly distributed between the front line players and a steady solid background provided by the rhythm section. All Jazz and Fusion connoisseurs should be able to find a lot to their liking here, and overall the album is a great fun to listen to, but also full of European Jazz aesthetics, superb compositions and depth rarely found across the pond.

The album definitely fulfills the expectations that the group´s semi-official debut released some years ago managed to create. Hopefully we won´t have to wait so long for their next release!

JOE FARRELL ~ ORIGINAL ALBUM CLASSICS
SONY 888750636829 (Barcode: 888750636829) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 - 1975 Released: 2015

This Box Set collects five of the six albums recorded by brilliant American flautist / saxophonist / composer Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist and released between 1970 and 1975 on the legendary CTIFind albums on this label Records label. They are: his debut as a leader and first album "Joe Farrell QuartetFind albums with this title", the second "OutbackFind albums with this title", the fourth "Penny ArcadeFind albums with this title", the fifth "Upon This RockFind albums with this title" and the sixth "Canned FunkFind albums with this title". His third album "Moon GermsFind albums with this title" was separately reissued on CD in 2001 by SonyFind albums on this label. Farrell joined the first incarnation of Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist in 1972 and took part in the recording of their first two legendary albums. The music presented on these five albums falls quite neatly into two separate categories: the first two albums are complex modern Jazz / Jazz-Rock Fusion and even include some Free Form moments, whereas the next three albums are Groove / Funk oriented.

The first album ("Joe Farrell Quartet") is especially noteworthy, as it is one of the most important and beautiful documents of the era. Farrell´s quartet, which also included pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist (all from Miles DavisFind albums by this artist electric band) is augmented by the presence of guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist on two tracks, turning the resulting quintet into a mighty power of Nature. It is worthwhile to compare these tracks with McLaughlin´s debut album "ExtrapolationFind albums with this title" or the Jack BruceFind albums by this artist album "Things We LikeFind albums with this title", which also features McLaughlin. Together these three a.m. albums contain some of the most important and powerful music ever made.

The second album places Farrell alongside Corea again, but this time with bassist Buster WilliamsFind albums by this artist and legendary drummer Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist, with whom Farrell recorded a series of superb albums for the Blue NoteFind albums on this label label between 1968 and 1971. It presents superb modern Jazz and Fusion, played by Masters of the trade. Together with the third album ("Moon Germs"), which is not present in this Box Set, which features Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on piano, Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist on bass and again Jack DeJohnette on drums, and of course his numerous recordings as a sideman, Farrell established his position as one of the leading figures on the US scene.

The remaining three albums document the transition Farrell made from modern Jazz / Fusion into Jazz-Funk, which is characterized by more emphasis on melodic content and Funk / Groove rhythmic patterns. Although many of Farrell´s fans had a hard time getting used to this new musical direction, his work in that genre was always top notch, with impeccable musicianship and wonderful compositions. He cooperated with several top players specializing in that specific area, like guitarist Joe BeckFind albums by this artist, bassist Herb BushlerFind albums by this artist and others. In retrospect these albums are classics of the genre, sound superbly fresh today and honestly had very little true competition by anybody else over the years.

Farrell, who sadly died in 1986, aged just 48, was definitely an exceptional player and composer, who contributed immensely to American Jazz by constantly searching for new way of expression, ignoring genre constrains and mainstream thinking. This Box Set is an essential listening to every Jazz / Fusion fan on this planet.
Side Note
The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label, the "5 Original AlbumsFind albums with this title" by UniversalFind albums on this label, the Box Sets by RhinoFind albums on this label and other similar releases are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.

The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.

In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

ANDRZEJ JOZEFOW ~ THREEISM
SYNTACTICA 001 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2015

This is the debut album by Polish Jazz guitarist / composer Andrzej JozefowFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio setting with bassist Adam ZuchowskiFind albums by this artist and Chilean drummer Luis Mora MatusFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten tracks, seven of which are originals by Jozefow, one is co-composed by all three trio members, one is a standard and one is a Classical piece by the French composer of Polish / Jewish origin Alexandre TansmanFind albums by this artist.

From the very onset of this album it becomes apparent that this is not the "usual" guitar trio album, usually created to show the guitarist´s skills and neck breaking speed. This one is a much more serious and deep affair, dark and introvert, which presents a musical concept and ensemble approach rather rarely found in such projects.

Jozefow´s music, which is the core of this album, is very melancholic, ascetic and slowly developing, a set of characteristics usually typical of Classical Music, but it is also inevitably Jazz in the best sense of the idiom. There is a lot of space and freedom in this music, which allows the musicians to spread their wings and soar high above the basic melodic and harmonic structure of the tunes, which keeps the listener on his toes for the entire duration.

The execution is also quite extraordinary; Jozefow plays gently, delicately strumming the guitar and sparingly uttering his notes, being a complete antidote of the usual guitar madness. His notes are like delicate strokes of paint on canvas, slowly but consistently exposing the idea. Zuchowski is a wonderful partner in this creating, playing with the bow almost as much as plucking his bass, adding another layer of color to the musical canvas and always being right there when he is needed. Matus also keeps his drums in check, faithfully supporting the subtle musical structures with his tasteful touches, keeping the rhythm on time only when absolutely needed and playing around the rhythms when appropriate. The overall interplay between these three musicians is nothing short of astonishing.

This is definitely a most impressive debut album, which surely promises many great things to come. I had the pleasure of meeting Jozefow in person during my recent visit in Gdansk, and he certainly makes an impression of treating his Art and career highly professionally. Therefore I can only wish him the best of luck, which he truly deserves.
