Composer / arranger / bandleader / bassist Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, a dear personal friend of mine who died in 2011, is one of the Godfathers of modern British Jazz, and his contribution to the genre as a musician, educator and writer are monumental. Although initially schooled in the US (Collier was the first student from the UK to be awarded a scholarship at the Berklee School of Music in Boston in the 1960s), he was in fact one of the pioneers of the European Jazz, accepting the American Jazz tradition as a basis for further development and exploration based on the European cultural heritage. His innovative approach as a composer and arranger were immensely influential not only on the local British scene, but also throughout the entire Europe, especially his usage of irregular meters and time signatures. Over the years Collier composed and recorded a colossal body of work, which includes some of the greatest music of the 20th Century.

This album, which is a fourth installment and a companion to the three previous BGO reissues of his early recordings, includes the last two recordings by Collier released on his own record label MosaicFind albums on this label Records, one of the first independently owned Jazz labels in Britain. Both these releases were inspired by the works of British poet and novelist Malcolm LowryFind albums by this artist, one of the most innovative writers of the 20th Century. "The Day Of The DeadFind albums with this title" (originally released as a double LP) includes extended fragments from Lowry´s masterpiece "Under The Volcano" and his other writings, narrated by John CarberyFind albums by this artist on top of the music performed by the band. Both works rank amongst Collier´s greatest achievements and his most adventurous recordings, with a loose composed frame and extensive group improvisations.

Collier is often called the Charles MingusFind albums by this artist of European Jazz, and the parallels are obvious. The music is of course absolutely stunning, from start to finish, and brilliantly performed. Every moment on this album is just right, brilliant and timeless, which makes it not only a perfect document of the era, but also a piece of music that retains its intrinsic values forever. Absolutely essential!

This is a reissue of the first five albums by the British guitarist / vocalist / songwriter Mike CooperFind albums by this artist. This remastered edition adds also three bonus tracks released originally on singles.

The first two albums present Cooper playing Blues / Folk / Country oriented material, mostly self-penned, on which he accompanied himself on acoustic guitar. On the second album he was joined by the legendary bassist Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and a female vocalist on a few tracks.

Considering how obscure and impossible to find these albums are this monumental reissue is a true godsend, done in the best tradition of BGOFind albums on this label Records´ mission to unearth music that should be given another chance.

The album presents seven tracks, four from the first session and three from the second. Those include all five compositions included on the “Tanglewood 63” album. In addition, it also presents “Country RoadsFind albums with this title”, written by Gary Burton and Steve Swallow, which appeared first on the Burton’s 1968 album by the same name, which included a couple of compositions by Gibbs and one co-composed piece by Gibbs and Burton, and which would have to wait for a couple of years to appear on the 1972 Gibbs “Just AheadFind albums with this title” album. The last track is “June The 15, 1967”, which appeared initially on the Burton’s 1967 “Lofty Fake AnagramsFind albums with this title” album, which also included two compositions by Gibbs, including this one, and which would have to wait for forty-two years to appear on the 2012 Gibbs “Back In The DaysFind albums with this title” album.

The music is, as everything Gibbs ever recorded, absolutely heavenly, both as far as the compositions and the performances are concerned. The formidable team of musicians, under his direction, is able to achieve peaks never earlier encountered in British Jazz orchestral music, and these archival recordings are absolutely fascinating, especially when compared to the final version of most of the music included here, recorded on the “Tanglewood 63” album.

So far, this is definitely my favorite release on the new Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, which does a splendid job digging out treasures from dusty vaults, especially so because this album also offers the best sound quality of all their releases so far. So as usual, hats off for the team behind the label and waiting for more of your gems. A bit more attention to details won’t hurt…

The great abundance of creativity and recording activity, which blessed the British Jazz scene during the Golden Decade (1965-1975), created, among many other cultural marvels, also the “silent hero” phenomenon, which in case of the great multi-instrumentalist / composer Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, is a classic embodiment of that concept. Although firmly present at the epicenter of the music-making turmoil at the time, from Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, via Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, NucleusFind albums by this artist, and most prominently Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, Jenkins’ name would hardly be the primary association for most people thinking about the music of that period, despite his enormous contributions – the fate of a “silent hero”. I have faithfully followed his continuous activity over the decades, which shifted primarily into the Classical Music idiom, which included grand pieces like “RequiemFind albums with this title” or intimate beauties like the latest “PianoFind albums with this title”, always with great satisfaction and pleasure.

This wonderful archival release brings us a three-part suite, composed by Jenkins and recorded live in 1971 with a dreamy ensemble, which includes the crème de la crème of the British Jazz-Rock musicians at the time: Jenkins on piano with trumpeter Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist and Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist, pianist Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist and percussionist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist, arguably the best ensemble ever put together at that time.

Although relatively short, running just under half an hour, the music is an absolute classic example of what was being created at the time, and as such somewhat similar, at least spiritually and aurally, to many other recordings of the period. The composition is based on a steady riff, which develops slowly and offers splendid opportunity to all the instrumentalists to create hair-raising solo parts. The sound quality is perfect, which makes the music to be audible in great detail.

Overall, this is a superb musical time capsule, brought to us courtesy of the people behind the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, who work tirelessly to unearth the great treasures of the British Jazz, making us, the followers and enthusiasts, ecstatically happy. It is also a much deserved “thank you” note to the contributions bestowed on us by this wonderful musician.

By 1974 the legendary Soft Machine switched record labels from CBSFind albums on this label / ColumbiaFind albums on this label (after releasing five magnificent albums on that label) to EMIFind albums on this label´s progressive HarvestFind albums on this label label, on which they would release the band´s last four albums before their epic story would finally come to an end. But the label switch was in fact only an exterior manifestation of the deep changes that the group was experiencing at the time. In retrospect, the four Harvest albums mark a completely new phase in the band´s musical direction, leaving behind the Free Jazz / Improvised Music extremes in favor of more structured and composed music, with strong melodic elements and almost mainstream Jazz-Rock sound. The most significant factor, which brought about the change, was Elton DeanFind albums by this artist´s replacement by oboe, saxophone and piano player Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, who also became the most prolific composer of the band´s new material. The second factor was the decision to include a permanent guitarist into the band´s ranks, which was to change the sound significantly from Jazz to Jazz-Rock. This was the first of the Harvest albums, with the Soft Machine lineup comprising of Jenkins, keyboardist Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist, guitarist Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist helps out on one tune. The music is quite different from anything the band recorded previously, based upon shorter and beautifully composed melody lines. There is still plenty of improvisation by the players, but it´s much more settled and well organized. Holdsworth delivers some of his best playing to date but the overall level of musicianship is astounding. In retrospect this is still one of the best British Jazz-Rock albums and a magnificent piece of music history. An absolute must!

Live recordings by the legendary Canterbury band Soft MachineFind albums by this artist have been popping out in recent years on a regular basis, but all of these concentrate on the early days around the period between (and before) the first album and up to about 1973. Therefore this live album is especially interesting, as it dates from 1975, when the band went through a radical change with a new lineup, adding the extraordinary powers of guitarist Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist. The band, which also included Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist on oboe, sax and keyboards, Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist on keyboards, Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist on bass and John MarshallFind albums by this artist on drums, abandoned the material recorded on previous albums and concentrated on entirely new material, written mostly by Jenkins and Ratledge, which was about to be released on the "BundlesFind albums with this title" album. The source of the recording is the endless archive of Radio Bremen, which of course ensures superb sonic quality. Soft Machine enthusiasts need no encouragement to grab this album with sweaty hands, expecting the best, and sure enough it delivers in full. The performances are stellar, the music enchanting and although less revolutionary and Avant-Garde then the earlier period, nevertheless it is still some of the best stuff played in the 1970s, with distinct Fusion overtones and masterly touches by the musicians. The album includes extensive liner notes, where the band members reminiscence about the period and circumstances of the recording – a great read and together with the music what a piece of music history!

This is the 11th studio album by the iconic British group Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, recorded after a thirty-seven years’ gap since their previous studio album “Land Of CockayneFind albums with this title” from 1981. It is also their first album since the interim Soft Machine LegacyFind albums by this artist name was dropped in order to return the original name. The group comprises of SM veterans: drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist, guitarist John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist and bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, with saxophonist / keyboardist Theo TravisFind albums by this artist completing the lineup. The album presents thirteen tracks, including new interpretations of older SM pieces, all composed by the group’s members. The album was recorded at the Temple Studio owned by the lamented Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, and engineered by him.

The music is a natural / organic continuation of the Soft Machine tradition, with a somewhat updated sound and ambiance, but easily recognizable as much as likeable by the groups many fans, who cling to the fond memories. The music of SM was always completely timeless and as such does not need to search for new pastures. It lost perhaps some of its Avant-Garde tendencies, which were dominant at the early days, but gained more melodic and harmonic richness and of course the experience of half a Century of music making, which leaves a significant mark on the music.

Overall, this is a most welcome “comeback” of sorts, although there was a continuous presence of Soft Machine in one way or another during the years, mostly by the numerous reissues of their live recordings, admittedly of varying quality, as well as solo recordings by the band members and various “related” projects. This is a first rate new material, every bit as satisfying as everything the group recorded in the past, different but familiar, exactly what the many fans of the group love to hear.

It is also their first live album since the interim Soft Machine LegacyFind albums by this artist name was dropped in order to return the original name. The group comprises of SM veterans: drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist, guitarist John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist and bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, with saxophonist / keyboardist Theo TravisFind albums by this artist completing the lineup. The album presents twelve tracks, which are mostly parallel to the tracks on the “Hidden DetailsFind albums with this title” studio album, recorded a year earlier, all originals by current or former SM members. As usual in such case, these live versions are somewhat more expanded and feature more improvisations and soloing, than the studio versions of the same tunes.

The music is a natural / organic continuation of the Soft Machine tradition, with a somewhat updated sound and ambiance, but easily recognizable as much as likeable by the groups many fans, who cling to the fond memories. This is the 3rd album by the iconic British Jazz / Fusion band Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, following their return to the original moniker in 2015, after dropping the “Legacy” suffix. It follows the 2018 studio album “Hidden DetailsFind albums with this title” and the 2020 live album “Live At The Baked PotatoFind albums with this title”. The lineup includes guitarist John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist / keyboardist Theo TravisFind albums by this artist, bassist Fred Thelonious BakerFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. Bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, who retired from the band by the end of 2021 and was replaced by Baker, guests on two tracks. It is the last album featuring Marshall, who died in 2023 a few months after this album was released and was replaced by Israeli drummer Asaf SirkisFind albums by this artist. The album presents thirteen tracks, a mixture of old and new compositions, seven of which were composed or co-composed by Travis and four composed or co-composed by Etheridge.

The music is the usual wonderful amalgam of Jazz and Fusion, based on beautiful melodic themes and brilliantly performed by these exceptional veteran musicians. Despite the fact that there is no attempt to innovate or revolutionize anything, which was the modus operandi of Soft Machine in their early days, the music played here is a synthesis of decades of experience and an attempt to keep the flame ablaze, without looking back.

Overall, this is an amazing piece of music, which should be a lighthouse of inspiration to the dozens of young Fusion bands, who sadly are not getting a right whiff of things. One can depend on these musicians to get it perfectly right, and to inspire and amaze the listener by their talents and acquired experience, continuing the six decades of well earned respect with pride.

The collection of tunes composed by Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist and recorded by the last Soft MachineFind albums by this artist lineup with guitarist John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist (Karl´s wife Carol BarrattFind albums by this artist plays keyboards as well) was never intended to be released as an album. It was recorded shortly following the recording sessions of "SoftsFind albums with this title", the band´s 9th album, and presents more or less the same musical patterns, with less space for improvisation or extended solo passages. This music was intended as "library music", a term used for music recorded by many British artists, which was intended to be used later by TV and cinema productions. Many of the most important British composers and musicians used this mechanism as an alternative source of income and in retrospect some truly incredible music was recorded for the vaults of many music libraries. Later on some of these recordings were released as albums, exactly like in the case of this album. In retrospect this album is every bit as strong as the rest of the late Soft Machine recordings. Although usually dismissed by music critics as feeble and even worthless, the truth is that it is quite interesting as much for the compositional aspects as for the excellent performances captured here. Let the critics say what they wish, but any true Soft Machine fan will find this music worthy of their attention and perhaps be quite surprised in case this is the first time he hears this little gem. Definitely worth investigating!

7th album, which was the last recording Soft MachineFind albums by this artist did for CBSFind albums on this label. Following the release of SixFind albums with this title veteran SM member Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist announced his departure from the group. Hopper was not happy with the direction the group was taking, namely the less adventurous and jazz oriented Jazz-Rock, which dominated Six. Being a bold innovator and restless explorer, Hopper’s idea of well-organized and structurally sound music was unacceptable, and he decided to leave. For the third time in a row the band enlisted to their ranks a replacement from the band NucleusFind albums by this artist, this time the bass player Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist (who already participated on FourthFind albums with this title and FifthFind albums with this title). He switched from his acoustic bass to a six-string bass guitar and his integration into the band was completely smooth and natural, as he was already familiar with John MarshallFind albums by this artist and Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist. The music, written mostly by Jenkins and Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist, is more Jazz-Rock than ever, with rather shorter, but extremely well structured and perfectly executed pieces. The keyboards duets and quirky rhythm patterns are the familiar Jazz-Rock devices used, similar to other groups which played similar music at the time. Contrary to the general opinion, which states that this album is not as strong as the previous SM releases, I personally completely disagree and consider this to be as essential as all the other CBS recordings with some of the best and most memorable SM tunes on it. After this album SM switched to the Harvest label, recording several Jazz-Rock albums featuring guitar players Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist and later John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist, all of which are still waiting for proper remaster. Essential!

By 1974 the legendary Soft Machine switched record labels from CBSFind albums on this label / ColumbiaFind albums on this label (after releasing five magnificent albums on that label) to EMIFind albums on this label´s progressive HarvestFind albums on this label label, on which they would release the band´s last four albums before their epic story would finally come to an end. But the label switch was in fact only an exterior manifestation of the deep changes that the group was experiencing at the time. In retrospect, the four Harvest albums mark a completely new phase in the band´s musical direction, leaving behind the Free Jazz / Improvised Music extremes in favor of more structured and composed music, with strong melodic elements and almost mainstream Jazz-Rock sound. The most significant factor, which brought about the change, was Elton DeanFind albums by this artist´s replacement by oboe, saxophone and piano player Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, who also became the most prolific composer of the band´s new material. The second factor was the decision to include a permanent guitarist into the band´s ranks, which was to change the sound significantly from Jazz to Jazz-Rock. This was the second of the Harvest albums, with the Soft Machine lineup comprising of Jenkins, saxophonist Alan WakemanFind albums by this artist, guitarist John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist (who replaced Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist), bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The last founding member of Soft Machine, keyboardist Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist left in the midst of recording of this album and his contribution here are minor. The music is a continuation of the direction set by its predecessor, based upon shorter and beautifully composed melody lines. There is still plenty of improvisation by the players, but it´s much more settled and well organized. In retrospect this is still a very solid album by a great band and an absolute must to all Soft Machine fans.

This is an archival live album by the iconic British Prog / Fusion group Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, recorded in Rotterdam on October 26, 1973. At the time this recording was made Soft Machine consisted of saxophonist / oboist / pianist Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents fifteen tracks, all composed or co-composed by the group members.

The group released the album “SevenFind albums with this title” before this concert was recorded, but none of the material from that album, except for one track, does not appear on this live album. One of the tracks that would appear on their next album “BundlesFind albums with this title” is also present, and the rest of the material originates mostly from “SixFind albums with this title”.

The music is mostly Jazz-Rock Fusion oriented, with lengthy tracks (in three cases over ten minutes in duration), with a double keyboards and dense rhythm section dominating the proceedings. Some hypnotic / Psychedelic moments are also present and there are definitely no dull moments for the entire duration. The sound quality is admittedly quite good for a live amateurish recording originating in the seventies. Although the album itself offers very little previously unheard aspects of the Soft Machine phenomenon, every second of their music, especially in such sound quality, is always welcome. Every time when one thinks the sources have been exhausted, some new recording pops out, which adds to the enormous live recording legacy by Soft Machine, mostly released by the CuneiformFind albums on this label label.

Overall, this is an excellent addition to the recorded legacy by one of the most important groups in British Prog / Fusion history, which despite the fact that it was recorded fifty years before being now released, is still completely valid and offers imaginative, ambitious music. An absolute must, of course, to the many Soft Machine completists, and quality music connoisseurs the world over. Considering the fact that Soft Machine still exists and I will hear them perform very soon, obviously adds to the joy of listening to this album.

The music is mostly new, but some older pieces are obviously played with new arrangements. The album was recorded live during the band´s European tour and this music is after all always better when played live. Essential for Soft Machine and Legacy fans!

The debut album offers eleven tracks and the second album offers ten tracks, almost all of which were composed by Westbrook.

The music is a zany, eclectic collection of absolutely stupendous music, light years ahead of its time at the time of the recording. It moves between Pop, Rock, Jazz-Rock, Jazz and typical Westbrook cabaret / vaudeville creations, all superbly performed by this elite team of musicians.

My recent review of Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist´s album "GraniteFind albums with this title" struck a "memory" chord and made me to come back to these two albums, which admittedly I have not listened to in decades. It is absolutely amazing how good this music sounds today, losing nothing of its freshness and ingenuity. The sense of humor and irony are already there, playing a major role in the overall scheme of things, going hand in hand with wonderful musicality and astounding versatility.

Although Solid Gold Cadillac was only a small "sidestep" in Westbrook´s decades long career, in retrospect it proves again that he definitely is a man of the "golden touch", as far as music is concerned, and everything he created over time is able to defend its values over time.

Although this reissue is long time out of print, it is definitely worth seeking out, not only for the Westbrook devotees, but for all British Jazz / Jazz-Rock collectors, who missed this jewel so far. Wholeheartedly recommended!

This is an album collecting three archival live recordings / radio broadcasts by the late British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, which present her in various settings with the crème de la crème of the British Jazz musicians active in the early 1970s. As a result, it is a companion album to the tremendous 14CD Box Set “Live At The BBCFind albums with this title” by Barbara Thompson, released in 2020 by RepertoireFind albums on this label Records, offering material uncovered after the Box Set was released. This album, released by the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, is a completely non-commercial release, with all profits from the album going to the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, a moving gesture by all the people involved, including Barbara’s and Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist’s daughter Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist and Jazz In Britain founder John ThurlowFind albums by this artist. We all still mourn Barbara’s and Jon’s untimely departures of course.

The first two tracks present the Group EFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) vocalist Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist, pianist Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, bassist Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist and drummer Laurie AllanFind albums by this artist. The music is Avant-Garde Jazz, with superb vocal parts by Lemer, who sadly is often forgotten, but was one of the most interesting Jazz vocalist of the period.

The next three tracks present a suite for a Big Band, called “The Awakening”, co-composed by Barbara and Jon. The band features a dreamy lineup of eleven instrumentalists and a vocalist – no other than my beloved Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist – which reads like a Who’s Who of the modern British Jazz and is conducted by Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist. The players are: trumpeters Ian HamerFind albums by this artist, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Don RendellFind albums by this artist and Barbara Thompson, cellist Charles TunnellFind albums by this artist, pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist, bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon Hiseman. The music is absolutely brilliant and very typical of the Big Band recordings recorded at the time by Neil Ardley, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist and others. The vocal parts by Winstone are, not surprisingly, my favorite jewels, but the entire suite is simply divine and the fact it was discovered and now released is no less than sensational.

The last five tracks are by Barbara’s group JubiabaFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) trumpeters George ChisholmFind albums by this artist and Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, Wadsworth, Le Sage, Peter Lemer, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, drummer Martin DrewFind albums by this artist and percussionist Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. It presents the early version of the band, which was essentially dedicated to combining Jazz with World Music influences, mostly Latin. As far as I am aware, this is the earliest recordings by Jubiaba captured on tape.

Overall, this is an absolute jewel from start to finish and an absolute must to all British Jazz enthusiasts, and in retrospect one of the most surprising and important releases by the Jazz In Britain label so far. The Big Band piece alone is a beacon symbolizing the birth of the modern British Jazz, with everything it stands for: ingenuity, originality, groundbreaking musical thinking and enormous talent. Hats off to everybody involved!

Pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist is one of the pioneers of British Free Jazz and Improvised Music. His work in the late 1960s / 1970s both as a leader and sideman with the leading Avant-Garde ensembles at the time, includes some the most daring and revolutionary British Jazz achievements. This album was recorded shortly after the gigantic CentipedeFind albums by this artist project, led by Tippett and comprised of over 50 Britain’s leading Avant-Garde Jazz and Rock musicians recorded their seminal (and only) album Septober EnergyFind albums with this title. In complete contrast, this album is all about intimacy, recorded by five musicians in various formats from duos to quartets. The music is completely improvised, capturing moments of musical exchanges between the musicians with no preconceived clearly defined themes. Tippett’s companions include his wife Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist (vocals), who not only changed her name (from Julie DriscollFind albums by this artist) but also made an almost complete about face from her previous Pop and Jazz-Rock background, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and two percussionists Frank PerryFind albums by this artist and Keith BaileyFind albums by this artist.
