WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ CHANGES MOOD 33.613 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1978 Released: 1988 This is a reissue / remaster of a solo album by German Jazz keyboardist / composer / bandleader Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist. The album presents six tracks, all original compositions by Downer, which he performs using acoustic piano and other keyboards / synthesizers, which he combines using multi-tracking. The album portrays Dauner both as a unique instrumentalist and a great composer, which made him one of the most important contributors to the German Jazz scene from the mid-1960s and almost until his death in 2020. He was of course also a co-founder of the MoodFind albums on this label Records, which released this album and an important Jazz activist / organizer on the European scene. As this album shows, his sense of melody and ability to weave sublime themes was completely unique. Dauner’s music always encompassed cross-genre elements and he felt very comfortable playing Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Jazz-World Fusion and other idioms. His collective recorded legacy, both as a leader and sideman, includes some of the most valuable European Jazz accomplishments, including his work with the United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist, Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist and numerous others. Overall, this is a wonderful collection of music composed and performed by Dauner, which remains untouched by passing time. A prolific composer, bandleader and activist, his contribution to the establishment of European Jazz and its emancipation from the restrains of the American Jazz tradition is truly immense. Dauner, who in addition to his musical activities, was also a prolific painter, always looked at music as an expression of an overall aesthetic / cultural point of view, with philosophical / social and even political undercurrents. Over the years Dauner created a most impressive body of work, encompassing many quite different styles and directions, spanning straightforward (but always unique) Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Free Jazz and Improvised Music. In the mid-1970s Dauner formed the revolutionary United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist – a multi-national group of superb European players, which brought Jazz-Rock Fusion to a level of absolute Art. He also co-founded the independent MoodFind albums on this label Records label, which for many years documented some of the most important and unconventional European music (mostly Jazz). His early recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label (as leader and sideman) are in retrospect perhaps the most important from the historical point of view, as they demonstrate the boldness, inspiration and urge to explore uncharted musical territories. Encouraged and supported by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, Dauner could freely express his visions, regardless how bold they might be, especially at the time. For this recording Dauner formed a septet, which included some of his regular cohorts like cellist / bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and American (but living in Germany) drummer Fred BracefulFind albums by this artist. The septet performs five of Dauner’s compositions, which provide a skeletal framework for group improvisations by the band members. The double bass / drums lineup allows for complex rhythmic patterns to evolve, and of course there is plenty of space for individual solo spots, but overall the music is mostly a group effort, Dauner uses “prepared piano” (i.e. differently tuned one) to achieve some novel sound approach. In retrospect this is a superb document of the birth of European Jazz, which takes the Free Jazz idiom and pushes it (here still ever so gently) into the Improvised Music realm. The music lost none of its power and inspiration over the years and for a “first time” listener should be quite an ear opener. WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ MUSIC ZOUNDS MPS 602498081907 (Barcode: 602498081907) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1970 Released: 2003 German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist is one the most important icons of the European jazz scene. Active since the early 1960’s he has been in the epicenter of the European free jazz since the mid-1960’s and then in the mid-1970’s he also expanded his activities to the jazz-rock scene by forming (with other excellent European jazz musicians) the United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist. In the last two decades he concentrates on writing film music. The piano trio, which is playing on this 1970 album, existed for several years prior to this recording, playing mostly free oriented music. Therefore, upon its release Dauner’s followers were completely taken by surprised by the music, which is a classic swinging jazz, almost a parody of swing if you wish. Obviously Dauner wanted to have a joyful, amusing look at the “middle of the road” jazz, which he does lovingly of course. Although at the first impression this music might sound as something done by George ShearingFind albums by this artist, in fact it is quite experimental and sophisticated. On top of the metronome swinging rhythm, Dauner and his phenomenal bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist perform some really hair-rising musical acrobatics. Weber wrote most of the material for this album, in addition to a couple of standards and one tune by his friend, the French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist. When asked at the time if this album wouldn’t be in contradiction to his Avant-Garde principles, he answered: “No, I’m not narrow-minded, and I never was. I don’t care what people say about me. The main thing is that the music is good and we all dig it.” I must say I absolutely concur to that statement. This is surely one of the most “good fun” jazz albums ever recorded. VERABRA 2014 (Barcode: 4011687201426) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1985 Released: 1991 This must be one of the most unique albums ever released, as it consists entirely of drum solos by the legendary British drummer / composer / bandleader Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, one of the pillars of modern British Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive Rock. There is but a handful of British musicians who have managed to create such a gigantic musical legacy over time and Jon´s contribution to music is simply invaluable. The solos on this album were all recorded during live concerts played by the United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist, an multinational collective of European Jazz musicians, of which Jon was a founding member, and concerts by the superb Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist´s ParaphernaliaFind albums by this artist ensemble (Barbara being of course Jon´s wife and life companion). The original LP edition of this album consisted of four tracks, two of which were full drum solos (lasting sixteen and eleven minutes respectively) and two part-solos included for their uniqueness. This CD version of the album was extended with one more full solo (also timing almost sixteen minutes). An album of drum solos might seem excessive (to say the least) at first, but anybody who appreciates the Art of music and the virtuosity involved in playing it will surely be able to appreciate the contents of this album. It is not only about Hiseman´s technical skills, but first and foremost about his musicality and his ability to "play" the drums rather than bang of them simply marking the tempi. Each of these solos is completely unique and tells a different story, with different moods, emotion and explorations involved. People who are experienced concert goers know that drum solos are usually just an opportunity to get the public excited with a seemingly dazzling display of drumming virtuosity, but in most cases have almost nothing to do with the actual music being played before and after the solo; in case of Hiseman´s solos there is as much music in them as when the full band is playing. These solos tell many stories about using the drum as an instrument on many different levels. They show how a melody can be played using drums, what polyrhythmic drumming means, how important controlling the dynamics is and finally how Rock, Jazz and Fusion merge together in the hands and legs of one fantastic drummer. In case you get completely bored and depressed by the bullshit you are exposed to on the Media on the day to day level, simply reach out and put this album in the player – I promise the world will instantly and inevitably turn into a better place. VOLKER KRIEGEL ~ MAINZ 1963-1969 SWR JAZZHAUS 101726 (Barcode: 807280172690) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1963 - 1969 Released: 2013 This album presents a delightful collection of early archival recordings by German guitarists / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, one of the most important pioneering European Jazz musicians, who is also often considered as one of the Godfathers of European Jazz-Rock Fusion. The music was recorded by the German Radio during four separate recording sessions that took place in 1963, 1967, 1968 and 1968. The first of these sessions is in a trio format and the rest are quartet recordings featuring vibraphone as the fourth instrument, which was Kriegel´s preferred format. A couple of guest musicians: flautist Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Gustl MayerFind albums by this artist are featured on the third and fourth sessions respectively. By the time the last session on this album was recorded, Kriegel was already a member of the Dave Pike SetFind albums by this artist, an ensemble led by the American (resident in Germany) vibraphonist Dave PikeFind albums by this artist which led to his exposure. This was followed by Kriegel leading several ensembles and recording as a solo artist and also the creation of the United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist by the late 1970 with other European Fusion musicians. Kriegel sadly died in 2003, aged only 60 at the time, an immense loss to the European Jazz scene. The material presented on this album gives a fascinating glimpse at the development Kriegel moved through in his early days, from playing quite traditionally on the first session, sounding like many American guitarist at the time (Joe PassFind albums by this artist, Wes MontgomeryFind albums by this artist) and playing standards, gradually changing his approach and reaching his personal style and phrasing and playing original compositions. From the very first moments it is quite obvious that Kriegel has something in him, which makes his playing unique. He is first and foremost a European Artist and even in the first sessions there are definite echoes of Django ReinhardtFind albums by this artist in parallel to the American influences. Similarly to the BBC in Britain, the German broadcasting bodies (radio and TV) in the various regions (Federal States) are an endless source of recordings of local and international artists in all genres. Hopefully more projects like this one will see the light of day soon, as these treasures are definitely too important to lay forgotten. Overall this is an excellent album of great historic importance, especially for European Jazz fans, with great sound quality and superb material, which definitely deserves to be listened to. Kriegel is one of those undiscovered geniuses, who reached only scarcely few listeners outside of his native country. He begun to play jazz in the early 1960’s on the burgeoning (at that time) Frankfurt jazz scene led by the Mangelsdorff brothers (Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist and Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist). At the time this music was recorded European Jazz was already enjoying its fully developed individual voice and the burgeoning German scene was one of its epicenters. Kriegel is credited as the father of the German Jazz-Rock Fusion due to his abundant activities from the late 1960’s on, when his guitar work and incredible compositions made him a leader in that field. He was the guitarist of the Dave Pike SetFind albums by this artist, the quartet led by the US Avant-Garde vibraphone player who lived in Germany at that time and later he recorded a series of groundbreaking solo albums as well as albums with his group Mild Maniac OrchestraFind albums by this artist, all recorded for the MPS label. He gets excellent support from his fellow musicians, especially from the superb Taylor, whose work on the electric piano here is simply mind-blowing. Add to this his gorgeous compositions and you have in your hands an album that after you hear it you’ll wander how come you never discovered it earlier? Well, surely better late than never! CHARLIE MARIANO ~ HELEN 12 TREES PROMISING MUSIC 44104 (Barcode: 602517546547) ~ USA ~ Jazz American saxophonist / composer Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist was a fascinating musical figure and a prime example of the difference between the American and the European approach to music in the late 1960s / 1970s. With an established career as a Bebop player in the US, Mariano left his home to travel extensively in the Far East, exploring the culture and music of India, Japan and other Asian countries. Upon his return the West, he settled in Germany and became involved with the local / European scene, not willing to return to the limited and narrow-minded American music scene at the time. He was a member of many Avant-Garde groups, which at the time expanded the musical boundaries of both Jazz and Rock music, including such legendary outfits as EmbryoFind albums by this artist, Pork PieFind albums by this artist and United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist. This recording for the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, organized by the producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, presents a fascinating aspect of his activity at the time and in retrospect remains as one of his all time best albums. With a dreamy ensemble, which includes the Polish violin virtuoso Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist, Czech keyboards wizard Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, British superstars: bassist Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist and Indonesian percussionist Nippy NoyaFind albums by this artist (resident in Germany), Mariano delivers a fantastic session, featuring six of his originals and one composition by Hammer. He plays soprano and alto saxophones, flute and his beloved Indian reed instrument called nagaswaram, which became his trademark. The music is a great mixture of many musical elements, including strong World Music influences, some Free Jazz and some Jazz-Rock Fusion. This strange amalgam works extremely well, creating a unique atmosphere, which is on one hand different from most other efforts at the time and on the other hand includes them all. Seifert “steals” the show every time he plays, as his virtuosity is overwhelming, but the ensemble work is overall superb, with plenty excellent solos. Uneven rhythmic patterns, “strange” melodies, great performances – all the elements that make music interesting and challenging are here for the listener to enjoy. This is a true classic of the era when daring was considered part of the norm. This beautifully remastered and packaged reissue is most welcome by many Mariano and European Jazz fans all over the globe. A must!

HOWARD RILEY ~ DISCUSSIONS JAZZPRINT 137 (Barcode: 604388682720) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007 This debut recording by the legendary UK pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist was initially released 40 years ago on a tiny label (OpportunityFind albums on this label, owned by producer Chris WellardFind albums by this artist) and has been unavailable for ages, making it a super-rare collector’s item. Riley has been spearheading the UK free jazz scene since the mid-1960, recording regularly over the years and serving as a beacon of musical enlightenment and vision. His exceptional talents as a pianist and composer are truly unrivaled, with the possible exception of his peer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. On this album Riley is accompanied by the brilliant bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist (Spontaneous Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist (SME)), another prominent figure on the UK free jazz scene, who recorded with Riley’s trio on more than one occasion. The trio performs a set consisting of several Riley’s original compositions and a few standards – these well disguised as appropriate for a free jazz setting. Some clearly melodic elements are still present on these tracks, as the adventurous full-blown Avant-Garde was yet to come, but this is a classic of the genre in every sense. The interplay between the three master musicians is phenomenal and considering their tender age (at the time of this recording) this is a monster achievement. Absolutely essential for all free jazz lovers, especially for connoisseurs of the UK branch of the genre.

He deployed the best technology for sound and stage setup, ensuring that both the band and the audience had the best possible experience. As Barbara faced the challenges of Parkinson’s disease, Jon’s support became even more essential. He threw himself into understanding the condition, building relationships with specialists, and even speaking at Parkinson’s symposiums, so knowledgeable that he was often mistaken for a consultant. This journey is poignantly captured in the film ‘Playing Against Time’. Through it all, their love for each other and their shared passion for music shone through. Jon’s protectiveness and Barbara’s resilience formed the foundation of their personal and professional lives.
