ROBERTO MAGRIS ~ LOVE IS PASSING THRU
JMOOD 023 (Barcode: 741718929039) ~ ITALY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2024

This is an album by Italian Jazz pianist / composer / bandleader and my Friend Roberto MagrisFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with Italian Jazz musicians: saxophonist Ettore MartinFind albums by this artist, bassist Danilo GalloFind albums by this artist and drummer Enzo CarpenteriFind albums by this artist. The album presents thirteen tracks, which offer solo, duo, trio and quartet recordings. Two of the tracks are original compositions by Magris, nine are standards and two are renditions of Italian Pop songs. The album was recorded in 2005 and was originally intended for release on the legendary Italian Black Saint / Soul Note labels, but the labels were sold and the album remained unreleased. The current passing of Carpenteri prompted Magris to finally release the album on his home label, the American JMoodFind albums on this label Records. The sound quality of the recording is remarkable.

The general theme of the album is love, and the compositions are all somehow connected to that theme, but the music offers a diverse stylistic range, from melodic mainstream to Free Jazz. Despite that stylistic variety, the music offers perfectly coherent continuity, proving that the Jazz spirit is completely independent of the specifics and can’t be limited to one aesthetic approach.

Magris and his cohorts are all seasoned musicians with wide experience and more importantly the special Italian “thing”, which surfaces in almost every Italian Jazz album, a sublime melodic approach, which goes back hundreds of years in Italian music tradition. As a result, many of the tracks on this album offer a heartwrenching melancholy, which is only to be expected.

Overall, this is a wonderful piece of music, which offers a nice collection of familiar tunes in new interpretations as well as some unusual music, altogether an excellent listening experience and first class musicianship. Good to have this material out at last, as it certainly is worth being listened to. Well done my Friend!

Side Note:

Magris recorded an album for my JazzisFind albums on this label Records label in 1990 with his quartet, expanded to a sextet by two Israeli musicians, called “Life In IsraelFind albums with this title”, and we have been in touch ever since.

WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ ZEITLAUFE
MOOD 33.007 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1988 Released: 1988

This is a solo album by German Jazz pianist / composer / bandleader Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve tracks, each for one of the months in a year cycle (the album’s title translates into “passing of time”).

The music is completely cross-genre, and allows Dauner to combine many influences, including Folk, Classical and of course Jazz, creating a wide spectrum of themes, which he performs on several instruments, including recorder, flute but of course with the acoustic piano in the focus of attention.

Dauner (who died in 2020) was one of the main pillars of the German Jazz scene since the mid-1960s and his sublime songweaving talent and total dedication to the music placed him at the epicenter of the process of creating the post WWII scene, working alongside the great German leaders and innovators and many musicians from across Europe. His recorded legacy includes some of the finest European Jazz and Fusion albums. I had the immense pleasure to know him and met him many times, spending countless hours talking about music.

Overall, this is a little known album by Dauner, which presents his incredible composing and performing skills, mostly outside of the Jazz idiom, but by all means no less fascinating. His sensitivities as a piano player and especially prominent herein and the relaxed, minimalist setting, which was his favorite, allows an intimate meeting with his incredible talents. This is wonderful stuff from start to finish!

KOLBE / ILLENBERGER / DAUNER ~ KID - SECOND STEP
MOOD 33.601 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1985 Released: 1985

This is the 2nd album by the German Jazz trio comprising of guitarists / composers Martin KolbeFind albums by this artist and Rolf IllenebergerFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist. Kolbe and Illenberger worked together as a duo, before adding Dauner and forming the trio, which appeared also under the KIDFind albums by this artist moniker. The album presents eight tracks, all original compositions, five by Kolbe & Illenberger and three by Downer.

The music is a mixture of Rock and Jazz, based on beautiful melodic themes and featuring extensive guitar improvisations on both acoustic and electric guitars. They released several albums on the MoodFind albums on this label Records label before joining with Dauner to form the trio, which released two albums. Dauner’s piano / keyboards work expanded the sound and capacity of the duo and enabled to create a more complex set of compositions, all staying strictly within the highly melodic / lyrical setting.

Overall, this is another wonderful cooperation between Dauner and other musicians, which showcases his universal talents. The beautiful music was very popular among Jazz-Rock Fusion fans and is sadly little known beyond the German scene, but although recorded four decades ago, lost nothing of its value and is still a very solid example of the talents of the musicians involved. Definitely worth being re-discovered or re-visited!

UNITED JAZZ + ROCK ENSEMBLE ~ ROUND SEVEN
MOOD 33.606 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1987 Released: 1987

This is the 7th album (3rd studio recording) by the quintessential European Jazz / Fusion ensemble United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist, established in 1975 by a group of European musicians, led by German keyboardist / composer / bandleader Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, British drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and his wife saxophonist / flautist Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, German guitarist Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist and trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist and Dutch trumpeter Ack van RooyenFind albums by this artist. The third lineup of the group, which recorded this album, included also British trumpeter Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, German trumpeter Johannes FaberFind albums by this artist, American (resident in Germany) saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist and German bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist. Dauner’s son, drummer Florian DaunerFind albums by this artist, contributes on one track. The album was released on the iconic MoodFind albums on this label Records label (see Side Note). The album presents seven tracks, all of which are original compositions by the ensemble members: one each by Dauner (a three-part suite), Mariano (co-composed with the great Indian vocalist R.A. RamamaniFind albums by this artist), Kriegel, Carr, Mangelsdorff, Thompson and Weber. This was the first album by the ensemble released on LP and CD at the same time, and due to the extended playing time possible on the CD, it includes two live bonus tracks, which do not appear on the LP edition. The exact date of the recording of these live bonus tracks is not clear and I suspect they were recorded at an earlier occasion.

This album marks the 10th anniversary of the recording history of the ensemble and beautifully reflects the constant musical development. The music becomes ever more complex and ambitious, often of orchestral scale, but never loses an iota of the Rock and Funk elements, combining everything into a unique amalgam, which always kept them apart from any competition or comparison. With three trumpeters on board the Big Band sound is always potent and the brass arrangements are more complex than ever. All members of the group get an opportunity to solo, but the main idea is to present an “ensemble” sound, rather than a collection of individuals.

Listeners familiar with the recordings by the individual members of the ensemble will often find the recordings by the ensemble quite different and innovative, as the mutual influence between the band members is very dominating. The ensemble manages to establish a unique sound and style, which will be recognizable as their own on their numerous recordings over time.

Overall, this is a brilliant and highly unusual Fusion album, a true classic of the genre and great example of the sophistication of European Jazz. The entire recorded legacy of the ensemble is a must in any serious Jazz / Fusion record collection.

VOLKER KRIEGEL ~ PALAZZO BLUE
MOOD 33.608 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1987 Released: 1987

This is the 14th and final album as a leader by German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quintet, which included keyboardist Thomas BettermannFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Christof LauerFind albums by this artist, bassist Michael SchurmannFind albums by this artist and drummer Thomas AlkierFind albums by this artist. The album presents four tracks, two each composed by Kriegel and Bettermann. Kriegel released ten albums on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label Records label and this was the 3rd album he released on the MoodFind albums on this label Records label.

Kriegel was one of the finest European guitar players of all time and a superb composer. He was a leader of the German Jazz-Rock Fusion movement since the late 1960s and his recorded legacy, expanded posthumously by previously unreleased studio and live recordings, presents some of the finest European Fusion ever recorded.

The music is based and deeply melodic themes, which are expanded by lengthy soli by the quintet members. Kriegel’s guitar virtuosity and unique sound are immediately recognizable and sadly have very little competition since his tragically premature death in 2003.

Overall, this is an absolutely stunning European Fusion album, intelligent, sophisticated and completely free of tedious doodling, which sadly completely ruled in Fusion music by the time this album was recorded. Not easy to find but absolutely essential to all true Fusion lovers and guitar enthusiasts!

UNITED JAZZ + ROCK ENSEMBLE ~ LIVE IN SCHUTZENHAUS

Recorded: 1977 Released: 1987

This is a reissue / remaster of the 1st album by the quintessential European Jazz / Fusion ensemble United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist, established in 1975 by a group of European musicians, led by German keyboardist / composer / bandleader Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, British drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and his wife saxophonist / flautist Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, German guitarist Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist and trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist and Dutch trumpeter Ack van RooyenFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, all of which are original compositions by the ensemble members: three by Dauner, two by Kriegel and one each by Carr and Mariano.

The music is absolutely stunning and completely unusual for the Jazz-Rock Fusion genre. Due to the strong horn section it is conceptually closer to Brass Rock, but on the other hand it has a much more potent Jazz presence. All the members of the ensemble are superb instrumentalists with many years of experience and the level of the performances is phenomenal. Hiseman’s incredible steady drumming keeps the large ensemble precisely together, despite the devilishly complex rhythmic patterns. Thompson’s flute parts are simply insane, and this is one of the finest example of the couple’s work together.

WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ CHANGES
MOOD 33.613 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1978 Released: 1988

This is a reissue / remaster of a solo album by German Jazz keyboardist / composer / bandleader Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist. The album presents six tracks, all original compositions by Downer, which he performs using acoustic piano and other keyboards / synthesizers, which he combines using multi-tracking.

The album portrays Dauner both as a unique instrumentalist and a great composer, which made him one of the most important contributors to the German Jazz scene from the mid-1960s and almost until his death in 2020. He was of course also a co-founder of the MoodFind albums on this label Records, which released this album and an important Jazz activist / organizer on the European scene. As this album shows, his sense of melody and ability to weave sublime themes was completely unique.

Dauner’s music always encompassed cross-genre elements and he felt very comfortable playing Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Jazz-World Fusion and other idioms. His collective recorded legacy, both as a leader and sideman, includes some of the most valuable European Jazz accomplishments, including his work with the United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist, Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist and numerous others.

Overall, this is a wonderful collection of music composed and performed by Dauner, which remains untouched by passing time.

WOLFGANG DAUNER / CHARLIE MARIANO / DINO SALUZZI ~ ONE NIGHT IN `88
MOOD 33.623 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1988 Released: 1988

This is the debut album by the trio comprising of German Jazz pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, American saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist and Argentinian bandoneon player Dino SaluzziFind albums by this artist. The album presents four lengthy tracks, two composed by Saluzzi and one each by Mariano and Dauner. The album was recorded during just one studio session.

The music is a wonderful tribute to the Tango, with original music by these excellent musicians, but close in spirit to the unique Tango mood, transferred into the Jazz environment. The interplay and obvious mutual respect and comradeship prevail and the music offers many slightly different approaches to the Tango idiom, full of brilliant improvisations, as appropriate for such Masters. Saluzzi is one of my all-time favorite bandoneonists and his playing is always full of true passion.

Overall, this is almost completely unknown gem, as all the releases on the small independent MoodFind albums by this artist Records label, co-owned by Dauner, which is definitely worth searching for, as this music was created with the single purpose of making heartfelt, creative music, free of any commercial, market oriented motives.

The album was released on the iconic MoodFind albums on this label Records label (see Side Note). The album presents eight tracks (one spoken intro), six of which are original compositions by the ensemble members: two by Dauner and one each by Mariano, Kriegel, Mangelsdorff and Thompson, and for the first time a Jazz standard by Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist, arranged by Thompson.

The album reflects the constant musical development of the ensemble and seemingly endless collection of musical ideas. The fact that the ensemble sounds as good live as in the studio testifies as to the remarkable level of musicianship and the joy of playing together.

VOLKER KRIEGEL ~ SCHONE AUSSICHTEN
MOOSICUS 1308 (Barcode: 885513130822) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1982 - 1983 Released: 2019

This is a reissue / remaster / expanded edition of an album by the iconic German Jazz / Fusion guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded with the participation of the top German Jazz / Fusion musicians active at the time: saxophonist Frank LoefFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Wolfgang SchluterFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Thomas BettermannFind albums by this artist, bassist Hans Peter StroerFind albums by this artist, percussionist / drummer Ernst StroerFind albums by this artist and drummers Junior WeerasingheFind albums by this artist and Michael Di PasquaFind albums by this artist. The original album presents eight original compositions by Kriegel and Hans Peter Stroer and was released in 1983 on the MoodFind albums on this label Records label. This reissue is expanded by three tracks, which were recorded in 1982 as soundtrack for an experimental short film.

The music is an excellent example of the advanced Fusion music that was created in Europe in the early 1980s, which incorporated complex rhythm changes and World Music influences, advancing the genre into new areas. Although featuring Kriegel’s brilliant guitar playing, it presents an ensemble sound rather than emphasizing the guitar as the leading instrument.

Overall, this is wonderful European Fusion album, performed by top German Jazz musicians active in the 1980s, as well as an important addition to the recorded legacy by Kriegel, which is carefully curated by his archive, which hopefully will be released in its entirety in time. For guitar lovers and European Fusion enthusiasts this is an absolute must!

REINOSO, JOSE ~ CONDOMBE INFLUENCIADO
NEW MOOD JAZZ 22013 ~ URUGUAY ~ Jazz

A wonderful album by keyboards player Jose Reinoso, who was born in Uruguay, studied in the US and currently resides in Barcelona, Spain. The album was recorded in 2004 in Madrid and is his “proper” debut as a leader, although he did several other albums earlier as co-leader with other musicians. This is basically a piano trio with additional percussion adding subtle ornamentation to the music and a few guest musicians appearing on selected tracks. The basic idea of this project is to create an amalgam of jazz and South American music, especially the mysterious and sensuous tango. Reinoso is a virtuoso player and the music he creates is truly amazing. His sensitivity as a player and a composer is remarkable, and his spotless performances are awe-inspiring. All the other musicians are also superb, providing the leader with sympathetic support at all times. Jazz connoisseurs should love this one to bits, especially those open to jazz mixed with ethnic influences. The album was released on a relatively new Spanish jazz label – New Mood Jazz – which released a series of amazing productions of the highest quality and should be on any jazz enthusiast’s watch list.

WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ FREE ACTION
PROMISING MUSIC 44105 (Barcode: 602517554993) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2008

German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist was one of the most important forefathers of European Jazz. A prolific composer, bandleader and activist, his contribution to the establishment of European Jazz and its emancipation from the restrains of the American Jazz tradition is truly immense. Dauner, who in addition to his musical activities, was also a prolific painter, always looked at music as an expression of an overall aesthetic / cultural point of view, with philosophical / social and even political undercurrents. Over the years Dauner created a most impressive body of work, encompassing many quite different styles and directions, spanning straightforward (but always unique) Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Free Jazz and Improvised Music.

In the mid-1970s Dauner formed the revolutionary United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist – a multi-national group of superb European players, which brought Jazz-Rock Fusion to a level of absolute Art. He also co-founded the independent MoodFind albums on this label Records label, which for many years documented some of the most important and unconventional European music (mostly Jazz). His early recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label (as leader and sideman) are in retrospect perhaps the most important from the historical point of view, as they demonstrate the boldness, inspiration and urge to explore uncharted musical territories.

Encouraged and supported by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, Dauner could freely express his visions, regardless how bold they might be, especially at the time. For this recording Dauner formed a septet, which included some of his regular cohorts like cellist / bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and American (but living in Germany) drummer Fred BracefulFind albums by this artist. He added three excellent German young players: saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist (who would later become one of the central figures of German Improvised Music and Free Jazz), bassist Jurgen KargFind albums by this artist and drummer / tabla player Mani NeumeierFind albums by this artist (later a member of the legendary Guru GuruFind albums by this artist group). As the last member of the septet Dauner selected the then little known French virtuoso violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, who was of course destined to achieve worldwide recognition later on.

The septet performs five of Dauner’s compositions, which provide a skeletal framework for group improvisations by the band members. The double bass / drums lineup allows for complex rhythmic patterns to evolve, and of course there is plenty of space for individual solo spots, but overall the music is mostly a group effort, Dauner uses “prepared piano” (i.e. differently tuned one) to achieve some novel sound approach. In retrospect this is a superb document of the birth of European Jazz, which takes the Free Jazz idiom and pushes it (here still ever so gently) into the Improvised Music realm. The music lost none of its power and inspiration over the years and for a “first time” listener should be quite an ear opener. Kudos to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for the excellent remaster and elegant packaging of the reissue. A must!

IGNACY JAN WISNIEWSKI ~ JAZZ SHIRIM
WOOD AND MOOD 0001 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2016

This is the debut album as a leader by young Polish Jazz pianist / composer Ignacy Jan WisniewskiFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio format with bassist Adam ZuchowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel OsickiFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions, all by Wisniewski, that were originally created for a theatre production about the Jewish Community in Gdansk before and during the WWII. The Hebrew word "shirim" means songs.

The music is an ambitious amalgam of melodic modern mainstream and free form improvisation. The pieces start with a clearly stated melody, followed by much less restrained improvisations, which are also very diverse rhythmically. The compositions are therefore just frameworks that are filled up by the improvised parts. This is definitely a very unusual and bold musical statement, which is also quite listenable in spite of its complexity and sincerity.

The trio performs as a very tight unit, responding attentively to each other and complementing each other´s statements. Although there is a lot of space and freedom in this music, the trio members are closely coupled at all times, which produces a wonderful effect of group cohesiveness.

Sometimes music created for theatre or cinema has no independent existence, but this music definitely holds the floor on its own, being completely relevant in its minimal form, which of course speaks greatly of its qualities. It does not make any artistic compromises or attempts to be more acceptable and it manages to fascinate and create a lot of tension for the attentive listener, which happens relatively rarely.

Overall this is a very impressive debut, and although the music was recorded a while ago, it´s good to see it finally released, as it certainly deserves to be heard. Serious Jazz connoisseurs should enjoy this music in full. Wholeheartedly recommended!

ALMOST JAZZ GROUP ~ FADE OUT
WOOD AND MOOD 0005 (Barcode: 5907222681015) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is the third album by the Polish quartet called Almost Jazz GroupFind albums by this artist, led by accordionist / composer Pawel NowakFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Ignacy Jan WisniewskiFind albums by this artist. The rhythm section comprises of bassist Maciej SadowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Antoni WojnarFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions: two each by Nowak and Wisniewski, three by Sadowski and one by Wojnar.

The quartet´s name accurately describes the music that it presents, which is borderline Jazz, based on melodic themes which serve as basis for the improvisations, which are very tamed and stay within the strict mainstream idiom, bordering on Groove, Smooth Jazz and even Pop. Nevertheless the music is very well composed, coherent and harmonically pleasing, without being trivial or crossing over to kitsch.

Personally I love the accordion´s sound and regret it is such a neglected instrument in Jazz, in spite of its enormous potential. The subtle balance between the accordion and the piano creates a wonderful atmosphere, which suits both the melancholic ballads and the swinging pieces. The bass supports the soloist amicably and very accurately, adding a crucial ingredient to the music. The drums are a bit too Rocky at times for this kind of music, but nothing dramatic which would break the charm. Both Nowak and Wisniewski play excellently and with obvious emotional involvement.

Overall this is a very pleasant, somewhat nostalgic album, very well recorded, which offers a splendid listening experience to connoisseurs of the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, but still being honest, superbly played and definitely worthy of listening. I had a great fun listening to it and I´m sure it will work for many other listeners as well – recommended!

IGNACY JAN WISNIEWSKI ~ KANTATA JAZZOWA
WOOD AND MOOD 0011 (Barcode: 5907222681077) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018

This is the second album by Polish Jazz pianist / composer Ignacy Jan WisniewskiFind albums by this artist, recorded with the same trio he used to record his debut, which includes bassist Adam ZuchowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel OsickiFind albums by this artist. In addition the album features also vocalist Kamil DominiakFind albums by this artist. Together they present eight "songs", all composed by Wisniewski to the lyrics written specifically for this project by Polish Poet Michal RusinekFind albums by this artist. The entire song cycle is called a "Jazz Cantata" and of course firmly belongs to the marvelous Polish Jazz & Poetry tradition. The album was beautifully recorded at the now legendary Monochrom Studio and engineered by Ignacy GruszeckiFind albums by this artist.

The music presents an ambitious amalgam of cross-genre modern Jazz, with roots in contemporary Classical music, melodic mainstream Jazz and Avant-Garde improvisation, all tastefully put together with the lyrics, creating an impressive and powerful statement. Wisniewski, who concentrates mainly on composing music for theatre, has definitely a very strong theatrical "streak" as a composer, which comes to full bloom herein.

The music is wonderfully executed, both on the instrumental and the vocal layers. Dominiak, who is not a Jazz singer, stands up to the challenge with flying colors, using his vocal abilities and more importantly theatrical expressionism to the max. The piano trio offers some excellent instrumental passages, shifting between melodic / rhythmic statements and Free Improvised moments with grace and elegance. The album offers a perfect balance between the instrumental and vocal contents, without one or the other being dominant, which is a rare quality in such projects.

The poetry, which sadly is only accessible to native Polish speakers, is a wonderful example of the thriving contemporary Polish Poetry scene. Rusinek (well-known as the private secretary of the great Polish Poetess Wislawa SzymborskaFind albums by this artist) is an accomplished writer / translator / poet and his brilliant plays on words are a true delight.

Overall this is another valuable addition to the Polish Jazz & Poetry legacy, which is being kept alive by the new generation of Polish Jazz composers / musicians, with the same passion and dedication as that of the pioneers of the genre six decades earlier. Definitely highly recommended!
