  | FRANCO AMBROSETTI / EMIL VIKLICKY ~ FRANCO AMBROSETTI & EMIL VIKLICKY TRIO MULTISONIC 310644 (Barcode: 741941064422) ~ SWITZERLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005
This album presents a live recording by the Swiss trumpeter Franco AmbrosettiFind albums by this artist supported by the wonderful trio led by Czech pianist / composer Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist with veteran bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Laco TroppFind albums by this artist. Ambrosetti has been a prominent member of the European Jazz community since the 1960s when the new, emancipated scene was emerging. His incredible phrasing, warmth and tone awarded him a position amongst the world´s top trumpet players.
The quartet together performs seven pieces, two of which are Viklicky´s originals, one is Uhlir´s original and the remaining four are standards. The performances are absolutely brilliant with Ambrosetti´s virtuosity flawlessly supported by the sublime playing of the trio.
In many respects this is a perfect example of European Jazz with all its elegance and sophistication. They compliment each other to the fullest extent creating outstanding Jazz music in the process. Uhlir´s powerful and always divinely melodic bass lines and especially his spectacular solos are a delight. I van hardly imagine any true Jazz lover not enjoying this music immensely. Highly recommended! Side Note This album is a part of the “Jazz Na Hrade (Jazz At Prague Castle)” series, released by the Czech MultisonicFind albums on this label label, which presents live recordings performed at various locations inside the charming Prague Castle, now the residence of the President of the Czech Republic.
The series was initiated in 2004 by President Vaclav KlausFind albums by this artist, who often introduces the players himself on these albums, and symbolizes the respect and love of all things Cultural by the Czech People, including Jazz of course.

  | CELLULA INTERNATIONAL ~ JAZZISSIMO INDIES HAPPY TRAILS 632 (Barcode: 8595026663220) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz Recorded: 1981 Released: 2008
Trumpeter / composer / bandleader Laco DecziFind albums by this artist is one of the founding fathers of Czechoslovak Jazz. He has been active on the local scene since the 1960s, leading many excellent ensembles, which included the best local players and often also guest from abroad. The names of his ensemble changed often, usually being a variation on the Jazz CellulaFind albums by this artist motif (like Jazz CelulaFind albums by this artist, Cellula InternationalFind albums by this artist, etc.).
This album presents the ensemble in a quintet format, with two guest musicians from the USA: trombonist Sonny CostanzoFind albums by this artist and drummer Dave WecklFind albums by this artist (before his rise to fame) and two Czech players: guitarist Zdenek DvorakFind albums by this artist and bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist. This is a live recording in a Prague Jazz club. They perform three original compositions, two of which are by the leader, and two standards. The performances are excellent from start to finish and this is a first-rate document of the Jazz behind the Iron Curtain at the time. Wholeheartedly recommended! Side Note Since the 1950s Czechoslovakia had a highly developed Jazz scene, certainly in proportion to its population, which included many successful ensembles and even Big Bands, as well as Jazz clubs, festivals and publications, all this in spite of state censorship and political limitations. The similar situation existed since the 1960s as far as Rock (including Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion) was concerned, resulting in many excellent, interesting and innovative ensembles.
The music was relatively well documented by the three state owned record labels: SupraphonFind albums on this label (founded in 1927), PantonFind albums on this label (founded in 1968) and OpusFind albums on this label (founded in 1971 and based in Bratislava, created on the base of Slovak division of Supraphon). Following the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989, the state owned record labels were privatized, with Supraphon dominating the local market.
However, Supraphon was quite reluctant as far as exploring its vast back catalogue is concerned, and this is where the small independent Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label Records, a reissue label dedicated to the preservation of the recorded legacy of Czechoslovak music, owned and run by the devoted enthusiast / historian Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, founded in 2007, comes in. Over the years the label released a plethora of brilliant music, reissuing long deleted LPs and extensively exploring the archives in search of bonus material.
The quest of Indies Happy Trails is similar to what the GADFind albums on this label Records label, run by Michal WilczynskiFind albums by this artist, is doing for Polish music, with similar consistency and praiseworthy dedication.

  | RICHIE COLE / EMIL VIKLICKY ~ RICHIE COLE / EMIL VIKLICKY QUINTET MULTISONIC 310799 (Barcode: 741941079921) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011
This album presents a live recording by the US / Czech quintet comprising of Chicago based saxophonist Richie ColeFind albums by this artist, baritone saxophonist Ted HogarthFind albums by this artist and drummer Ernie AdamsFind albums by this artist and two Czech players: veteran pianist / composer Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist and young bassist Josef FecFind albums by this artist. Together they perform nine pieces, three of which are Cole originals, one Viklicky original and five standards. Cole is mostly associated with the post-Bebop tradition, keeping alive the music initiated by the legendary Charlie ParkerFind albums by this artist. Hogarth continues the baritone saxophone tradition first developed by Gerry MulliganFind albums by this artist. Fec continues the great tradition of the Czech bass school of George MrazFind albums by this artist, Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist and Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist.
Viklicky is of course well versed in the Bebop ways, as this was after all the music that he played extensively in the early days of his Jazz career. He performed with Cole in Chicago, earning respect and appreciation from the audiences there, which eventually led to this beautiful concert in Prague. The music is absolutely superb from start to finish and the performances stellar. Everybody seems to have a great time and the individual solos simply soar chasing one another. This is mainstream Jazz of the highest caliber and every connoisseur of the music will be absolutely delighted listening to this display of virtuosity and class. Side Note This album is a part of the “Jazz Na Hrade (Jazz At Prague Castle)” series, released by the Czech MultisonicFind albums on this label label, which presents live recordings performed at various locations inside the charming Prague Castle, now the residence of the President of the Czech Republic.

  | JAROMIR HONZAK ~ A QUESTION TO ALL YOUR ANSWERS ANIMAL MUSIC 005 (Barcode: 8594155996551) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
This is the fourth album as a leader by Czech Jazz bassist / composer Jaromir HonzakFind albums by this artist and his first release on the excellent Czech label Animal MusicFind albums on this label. The album was recorded by a Czech / Polish quartet which also included Czech guitarist David DoruzkaFind albums by this artist and Polish pianist Michal TokajFind albums by this artist and drummer Lukasz ZytaFind albums by this artist, both of which played with him on this album´s predecessor "Present PastFind albums with this title". Clarinetist Tomas CisteckyFind albums by this artist, flautist Lucie CisteckaFind albums by this artist and pianist Vojtech ProchazkaFind albums by this artist appear as guests. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Honzak. Seven of the tracks were recorded at the excellent Studio Tokarnia and engineered by Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, with the usual superb sound quality. The last track was recorded at the Czech Radio and features the a.m. guests.
Honzak, whom I have been watching closely since many years, proudly continues the Czech Jazz Bass tradition, established by internationally known bassists like George MrazFind albums by this artist (really Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist) and Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist, but also less known outside of their homeland like Ludek HulanFind albums by this artist, Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist, Karel VejvodaFind albums by this artist, Petr KorinekFind albums by this artist and others. His beautifully round notes and chronometric pulsations are always a guarantee of a perfect rhythm section anchor in the numerous recording he took part in.
But on this album Honzak great forte are his wonderful compositions, which are beautifully woven, versatile and most importantly open enough to be stretched and explored by the quartet members, often towards unexpected directions. As a result this album is a superb ride into the unforeseen, with each track taking the listener on a new adventure. Not losing the sense of melody and coherence, the music has so much freedom and breathing space that the flexibility is endless.
Of course the leader gets fantastic support from the quartet members; Doruzka, here fourteen years younger than today, is already a bright star on the European scale, while Tokaj and Zyta, despite their relatively young age at the time were already seasoned veterans, capable of playing virtually anything. Together the quartet sounds like an organic unit and in retrospect I´d love to hear this experience repeated again.
Overall this is a brilliant album from start to finish, a perfect reflection of 21st Century European Jazz at its best. Fourteen years later it still sounds perfectly fresh and sparkling with ingenuity, like a gem it is. Absolutely not to be missed!

  | IMPULS ~ IMPULS (CZECHOSLOVAK JAZZ-ROCK EXPANDED EDITION) INDIES HAPPY TRAILS 628 (Barcode: 8595026662827) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1975 - 1977 Released: 2008
This wonderful reissue collects all the recordings by the Czechoslovak ensemble ImpulsFind albums by this artist. It is a brilliant document of the music scene, which thrived in Eastern Europe behind the Iron Curtain, in all the so-called "Socialist" countries, and was every bit as interesting, groundbreaking and visionary as anything else happening at the same time in Western Europe or the USA. In spite of political pressures, artistic censorship and economic hardships, with very limited access to recordings from the West, decent equipment or proper recording facilities, these young and ambitious musicians were exploding with ideas and boldly exploring new territories. The resulting music created at the time remains completely relevant today and should be rediscovered by young audiences, as it lost absolutely nothing of its power and intellectual quality.
Impuls was formed by three young and talented Jazz musicians: keyboardist Pavel KostiukFind albums by this artist, guitarist Zdenek FiserFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Michal GeraFind albums by this artist. They were joined by brilliant bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Jaromir HelesicFind albums by this artist. The three founding members contributed their original compositions, which were the core of the ensemble´s material, but sometimes they also played standards. Impuls was the most Jazzy of all the Czech Jazz-Rock ensembles and the level of their performances and compositions is truly stellar.
The bonus material includes an ultra-rare EP and tracks released previously on compilation albums. In retrospect this is some of the best Eastern European Jazz-Rock, which should not be missed by any connoisseur of the genre. A must! Side Note Since the 1950s Czechoslovakia had a highly developed Jazz scene, certainly in proportion to its population, which included many successful ensembles and even Big Bands, as well as Jazz clubs, festivals and publications, all this in spite of state censorship and political limitations. | KUHTRIO ~ OLD SOULS ATS 0955 (Barcode: 9005216009558) ~ AUSTRIA ~ Jazz Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020
This is the debut album by the Austrian / Czech Jazz trio, called KUHtrioFind albums by this artist, which comprises of Austrian guitarist / composer Edi KohldorferFind albums by this artist and veteran Czech rhythm section with bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Jaromir HelesicFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten original compositions, five each by Kohldorfer and Uhlir.
The music is all modern mainstream Jazz, with excellent compositions, which are diverse enough to keep the listener fascinated for the entire duration. Although guitar trios are often problematic as far creating a sustained attentiveness, this album passes this test with distinction.
It is obvious that these musicians have a great fun playing together, which always contributes to the result. Uhlir is a phenomenal player, one of my favorite bassist, and his technique and feeling are always shining. Helesic is also a great drummer, but here he shows restraint most of the time, as required by the circumstances. In contrast to the two Czechs, with whom I have been familiar since decades, I was not exposed to Kohldorfer earlier on, but he turns out to be a bona fide Jazz guitarist, playing notes and chords with the same confidence and refined technique.
Overall, this is a classic Jazz guitar trio album, with excellent original compositions and superb performances. Since great guitar trio albums are relatively rare these days, it is even more fun to listen to this music, which proudly continues the tradition. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | PETER LIPA ~ NEUPROSNE RANO / PETER LIPA T&R BAND OPUS 91 0116 (Barcode: 8584019011629) ~ SLOVAKIA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1983 - 1989 Released: 2010
This wonderful reissue brings back to life two albums by the excellent Slovak vocalist / composer / bandleader / Jazz activist Peter LipaFind albums by this artist. Lipa was active on the Czechoslovak scene since the 1970s and recorded his debut album with top Czech players at the time: keyboardist Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist, bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and many others, including a large brass section. The album, which contains a mixture of original songs (two written by Viklicky) and standards is beautifully arranged and performed and is a masterpiece full of Blues influenced Jazz-Rock / modern Jazz vocal extravaganzas. The second album, recorded six years later, presents quite a different stylistic approach, combining vocals with traditional Jazz (Dixieland, etc.). On that album Lipa sings mostly standards, which were arranged and "transposed" into traditional Jazz. His vocal virtuosity and highly original approach are clearly evident on these recordings. Together this set contains some truly excellent vocal Jazz with exceptional instrumental support, which should delight Jazz connoisseurs all over the world.

  | PRAGUE SUPER QUARTET ~ LIVE GALEN 20 172 (Barcode: 8594042901842) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz Recorded: 2013 Released: 2020
This is an archival live album by a quartet comprising of top Czech Jazz musicians, collectively called Prague Super QuartetFind albums by this artist, which includes saxophonist / flautist Jiri StivinFind albums by this artist (born 1942), pianist Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist (born 1948), bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist (born 1950) and drummer Josef VejvodaFind albums by this artist (born 1945). The album presents eight tracks, five of which are Jazz standards and three are arrangements of Czech Folk songs.
The music is all within mainstream Jazz format, and the main reason for the existence of the quartet is to enable the four Godfathers of Czech Jazz to combine forces and display their experience and extraordinary abilities. Therefore, there are few surprises here, just excellent straightforward Jazz performed by top musicians. Of course Stivin’s flute playing is always extraordinary, as is Viklicky’s lyricism, Uhlir’s virtuosity and Vejvoda’s superb sense of rhythm. It goes without saying that these Czech musicians can play as well as any of their counterparts across the pond, which has of course already been proven countless times.
Overall, this is an excellent mainstream Jazz effort, which should satisfy Jazz lovers across the globe, and perhaps convince some listeners, who never came across Czech Jazz earlier, to look for more music originating in that country, including that played by younger generations. Side Note The Czech publishing house and record label GalenFind albums on this label, run by Lubomir HoudekFind albums by this artist, is another player on the local scene, reissuing historical recordings from the deep vaults of the SupraphonFind albums on this label / PantonFind albums on this label labels, supported by the Czech Ministry of Culture. This commendable initiative is a wonderful example of the preservation of Cultural heritage. Hopefully the label's future releases will include information in English in the album's booklets, so that Jazz enthusiasts around the world might be allowed to share the knowledge.

This album presents a live recording by the US trumpeter Marcus PrintupFind albums by this artist supported by the wonderful trio led by Czech pianist / composer Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist with veteran bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Laco TroppFind albums by this artist. Printup is primarily known from his work as a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra led by Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist. He and Viklicky met when the orchestra was performing a piece composed by Viklicky, which included a solo spot Printup was assigned to perform. The quartet together performs six pieces, three of which are Viklicky´s originals, one is a traditional Czech song arranged by Viklicky and two are standards.
The performances are absolutely brilliant with Printup´s virtuosity fiercely supported by the sublime playing of the trio. In many respects this is a perfect marriage of the American Jazz tradition and the European elegance and sophistication. They compliment each other to the fullest extent creating outstanding Jazz music in the process. Uhlir´s powerful and always divinely melodic bass lines are a delight. His contributions as a teacher and educator were also invaluable. This is a delightful album by the Czech flautist / saxophonist / composer / bandleader Jiri StivinFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quartet, which also includes guitarist Jaroslav SindlerFind albums by this artist, bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Josef VejvodaFind albums by this artist. Stivin, who´s been active on the local scene since the 1960s, is undisputedly one of the Godfathers of Czech Jazz and his many recordings are all examples of musical excellence. This project reflects his connection to Czech and Slovak Folklore, which serves as a source of inspiration to the music recorded on this album. Eight folk songs are given a Jazz treatment by Stivin and his cohorts; one Stivin original and ten short transition pieces (lasting under a minute each) and one piece by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist are also used. The performances are brilliant from start to finish, as expected from such refined players. Stivin excels on flute, sounding quite similar to Ian Anderson at his best. His sense of humor is also well reflected on this album, which overall is a most pleasurable listening experience. This album should be very interesting not only to Jazz fans, but also to most Prog fans! Wholeheartedly recommended!

This 2CD set presents two quite different recordings by Czech bassist / composer Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist, one of the veterans of the local scene with a splendid career behind him. From his early days as a member of the legendary SHQFind albums by this artist ensemble, led by the Godfather of Czech Jazz vibraphonist Karel VelebnyFind albums by this artist, and consistently over the years, Uhlir established his position as the perfect bass player suitable to support any ensemble, take part in any recording, as well as lead his own groups. His incredible technique, superb feel for melody, perfect timing and beautiful tone place him among the world’s top Jazz bassists, stylistically comparable to Scott LaFaroFind albums by this artist and Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist. Needless to say he has been one of my favorite bass players ever since I heard him first in the 1970s and I followed his career as much as I could. Uhlir performed with the best players on the local scene, such as pianists Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist and Karel RuzickaFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Laco DecziFind albums by this artist, guitarist Rudolf DasekFind albums by this artist and many others. He also accompanied many visiting Jazz luminaries at their Prague concerts as well as toured abroad.
The first album in this set presents is a live recording of Uhlir with his recent ensemble, called Frantisek Uhlir TeamFind albums by this artist, which also includes saxophonist David VrobelFind albums by this artist, guitarist Adam TvrdyFind albums by this artist and veteran drummer Jaromir HelesicFind albums by this artist. They perform seven compositions, five of which are Uhlir’s originals and two are standards. The performances are excellent and highly spirited, with the leader soloing frequently, sometimes also playing arco (using the bow), which is rarely heard today. Uhlir’s compositions are great vehicles for the players to show their skills and are examples of great modern Jazz, which is not trying to be over pretentious.
The second album is a most welcome reissue of Uhlir’s debut album as a leader, recorded in 1984, which presents seven of his original compositions performed by an all-star lineup with vibraphonist Karel Velebny, pianist Emil Viklicky, drummer Tony NaharFind albums by this artist, guitarist Zdenek DvorakFind albums by this artist, percussionist Josef VejvodaFind albums by this artist and a string quartet. Beautifully arranged and exquisitely performed, this is a dream of an album, which every bass lover on this planet should listen to, given the opportunity.
It’s delightful to have this music finally available on CD. Overall this set is a sizeable portion of superb modern mainstream Jazz with virtuosic bass performances, which are exciting, elegant and highly intelligent. Charming stuff!

  | FRANTISEK UHLIR ~ DOUBLE BASS SESSION MULTISONIC 310737 (Barcode: 741941073721) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009
This album presents a live recording by a one time octet led by the great veteran Czech bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist, which includes five double bass players playing simultaneously, definitely a completely innovative concept. Apart from Uhlir, who has been the country´s modern jazz pillar for several decades, the other bassist include the veteran German bassist Ali HaurandFind albums by this artist, known for his involvement on the European Jazz scene both in the mainstream and more experimental directions, and three younger Czech bassists: Peter DvorskyFind albums by this artist, Vit SvecFind albums by this artist and Tomas BarosFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist David VrobelFind albums by this artist, guitarist Adam TvrdyFind albums by this artist and drummer Jan LinhartFind albums by this artist are the remaining octet members. The octet performs seven pieces, four of which were composed by Uhlir, one by Haurand and the remaining two are standards, including the wonderful "Rosemary´s Baby" by legendary Polish composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist.
Obviously the bass is the center of attention here, with many superb solos and ensemble performances. Uhlir manages to arrange the music in such a way that each bass performance can be heard perfectly clearly, which is quite difficult. It will take some effort from a less experienced listener to follow five basses simultaneously, in addition to the other three instruments, but the effort is definitely worth it. In addition to being a great tribute to the bass, this album also presents the next generation of Czech bass players, who follow in the footsteps of their great predecessors, like Uhlir, George MrazFind albums by this artist (originally Jiri Mraz) and Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist.
There is so much love, care and intelligent playing here, that every Jazz connoisseur, and of course double bass aficionados in particular, should be delighted with the music herein. Hats off to Uhlir for putting this project together and of course a big thank you. Warmly recommended! This album presents the concert organized to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of the great Czech bassist / composer Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist, who is one of the pillars of the local Jazz scene. The band constitutes of excellent players from different countries, creating a first-class nonet, which performs ten pieces, six of which are Uhlir’s original compositions, two are composed by other band members and the remaining two are standards.
The music and the performances are highly spirited and excellent from start to finish, with extended solo spots and great interplay between the participants. Stylistically this is modern mainstream Jazz, which relies on the skills of the musicians and the strength of the compositions to keep things interesting, rather than flashy exhibitionism. Uhlir, as usual, keeps the music swinging and in check, like a chronometer, with his beautiful tone and imaginative solos highlighting the evening.
Overall, this is an ample tribute to his immense talent and continuous contribution to the Czech and European Jazz heritage. He joins the proud ranks of his colleagues George MrazFind albums by this artist and Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist as a representative of the great Czech bass school, which is universally acknowledged as exceptional. This album presents a live recording by a trio led by the great Czech bassist / composer Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist, which also includes the Croatian guitarist Darko JurkovicFind albums by this artist and veteran Czech drummer Jaromir HelesicFind albums by this artist. The trio performs four original compositions, two each by Uhlir and Jurkovic. On four additional tracks the trio is expanded into a quartet with the addition of the veteran Serbian trumpeter Dusko GoykovichFind albums by this artist and plays standards.
The trio is an intimate opportunity to develop high level of dialogue between the players and this is exactly what the first four tracks emphasize. Jurkovic has a brilliant technique and superb sense of melody, with his notes cascading and sparkling brilliantly. Uhlir, as usual, provides the perfect canvas, which holds the music together. His tone and precision are second to none. Helesic is ideal for this setting, with his delicate yet firm grip of the often complex rhythmic structures.
Once the trumpeter joins the trio, the mood changes and becomes more vibrant and swinging. In spite of his advanced age Goykovich still manages to produce a perfect delivery, as if untouched by time. Decades of experience gained by playing with the best Jazz bands around the world are clearly evident. Overall this is a perfect Jazz album, which should keep any Jazz lover anywhere on this planet happy. Recommended! | EMIL VIKLICKY ~ BALLADS AND MORE ARTA 10161 (Barcode: 8595017416125) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008
The piano trio is the perfect Jazz format; it has everything that Jazz is all about: melody, harmony, rhythm, interplay, individual and collective improvisation, in short the essence of Jazz. To make it work as a perfect format, one needs three great musicians to play together in a piano trio setting, and this one is as close to perfect as one dares to hope for, sending that delightful thrill down the listener´s spine, when listening to a Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist or Bill EvansFind albums by this artist piano trio recording. This trio comprises of three Czech Jazz veterans: leader / pianist / composer Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist, extraordinary bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Laco TroppFind albums by this artist. All three have been active on the local, as well as international scene for decades. Both Viklicky and Uhlir are recognized worldwide as top performers on their respective instruments and have been my personal favorites since hearing them for the first time ages ago. For this album Viklicky decided to perform a set of Jazz standards rather than playing his own music, which is what he usually does. Only one of the thirteen tracks is his original composition by Viklicky and another one by Uhlir. The rest of the music is composed by well known Jazz artists as diverse as Keith Jarrett and Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist or standards. For a pianist with such a rich songbook, as the one composed by Viklicky, playing compositions by other composers is a matter of choice and of course a great challenge, considering of course the need to present an interpretation worthy of a masterful musician, such as Viklicky indisputably is. Of course the result is exactly as expected: intelligent, delicate, touching, elegant and simply brilliant. Viklicky´s interplays with Uhlir are nothing short of the legendary Bill Evans / Scott LaFaroFind albums by this artist magic and his solos are masterly and aesthetically perfect. Tropp plays mostly very subtly and distinctly low level, which is exactly right for this kind of music. Altogether this is a beautiful and deeply touching piano trio album, one of those you never get tired of, never!

This album presents a live recording celebrating the 60th birthday of the great Czech pianist / composer Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist and paying tribute to his enormous contribution to the local and international Jazz scene. It features the Viklicky trio with the superb bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Laco TroppFind albums by this artist (he plays on just one track), both veterans of the Czech scene and Viklicky´s cohorts since many years, and a host of guests invited especially for the occasion.
These guests are Jazz musicians who played with Viklicky in the past and share his passion for music: Belgian flautist / saxophonist Steve HoubenFind albums by this artist, British saxophonist Julian NicholasFind albums by this artist, US drummer Dick WellerFind albums by this artist and German harmonica player Hendrik MeurkensFind albums by this artist. Together they play nine pieces, three of which are standards and the rest are originals composed by Viklicky and his guests. The obvious rapport and mutual respect, as well as the festive occasion all contribute to the relaxed atmosphere present herein, which works in favor of the music.
There are of course many exceptional solos by the host and his guests. The music is mainstream Jazz, kept well within the tradition, which emphasizes melody and harmony, fabulously and elegantly executed by all the participants. A must for all piano lovers! | EMIL VIKLICKY ~ IN HOLOMOC TOWN (EXPANDED EDITION) SUPRAPHON 6089 (Barcode: 099925608927) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz Recorded: 1977 - 1984 Released: 2012
This long overdue reissue presents the debut album recorded by the Czech pianist / composer Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist, who in time became one of the leading Jazz (and not only) musicians in his country. It includes nine original compositions by Viklicky and is performed by a splendid quintet, which also includes violinist Jan BeranekFind albums by this artist, guitarist Lubos AndrstFind albums by this artist, bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Milan VitochFind albums by this artist, who played with Viklicky previously in such groups like the Fusion ensemble EnergitFind albums by this artist or the legendary SHQFind albums by this artist ensemble led by Karel VelebnyFind albums by this artist. The music is truly remarkable and beautifully crafted, combining many different influences but being predominantly Viklicky´s own creation. Although incorporating the Jazz tradition, it is very European in every respect: the melodic lyricism, the usage of Folk motifs and Classical harmonies and the sophisticated chord changes. In retrospect it is even more remarkable considering fresh it sounds today, 35 years later, losing nothing of its charm and elegance. The performances are also extraordinary: Viklicky´s virtuosity as a pianist was already an established fact by the time this album was recorded, but his partners, and especially the brilliant Uhlir, match his abilities perfectly. I distinctly remember listening to this album when it was first released, which was quite a revelation. Both Viklicky and Uhlir remain among my favorite musicians to this very day, and I owe them many happy musical moments. The album was released at the time in two versions; one for the local Czechoslovak market (with the original title) and one for export with an alternative title: "The Folk-Inspired Jazz PianoFind albums with this title". The State-owned Supraphon label, which at the time was a controlled and censored monopoly, emphasized the Folk influence (in this case Moravian Folk music), which was a very old trick used in all East European countries during the Socialist regime, to enable Jazz albums to be recorded under the pretext of preserving National cultural heritage. In retrospect (again) whatever the excuse, the music was recorded for posterity and music lovers are able to enjoy it again. This expanded edition adds to the original contents of the album five solo piano pieces recorded in 1984, which constitute a Suite for piano, originally released as the B-side of the LP "DoorFind albums with this title" (see also the recently reissued album "Window & DoorFind albums with this title"). This is a beautiful, sensitive, delightful album, which should be enjoyed by as many Jazz connoisseurs as possible. Wholeheartedly recommended!
