OLES BROTHERS / THEO JORGENSMANN ~ TRANSGRESSION
FSR 2016/04 (Barcode: 5905279364103) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2016

This is the fifth album by the trio which unites Polish Jazz and Improvised Music twin team of bassist / composer Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, and German clarinetist / composer Theo JorgensmannFind albums by this artist. The music included on this album was recorded in 2010 and originally intended for release as their second album on the Swiss Hat HutFind albums on this label Records HatologyFind albums on this label Label, but for a variety of reason was delayed and eventually released on the Polish FSRFind albums on this label label. It includes eleven original compositions, three of which are by Marcin Oles and four each by Bartlomiej Oles and Jorgensmann.

The album marks a culmination of a ten years period during which the trio recorded and performed together intensively. As a result their work here is remarkably coherent and organic and the musical unity they demonstrate is truly marvelous. The music flows flawlessly between solo, duo and trio statements, with the rhythm section being elevated to a status of frontline performers. The telepathic conversation between all three musicians is staggering, as usual, and the trio becomes a complete, undividable unit.

The album also marks a path towards more composed and less freely improvised music, which has characterized the trio´s progression over time. That does not mean of course that the music is restrained in any way, but the composed structures are plainly hearable and strictly adhered to, notwithstanding the enormous degree of freedom applied in the performances themselves.

In retrospect this is definitely a brilliant closing chapter to the trio´s activity, which was certainly one of the most interesting European Jazz units at the time. Of course for Oles Brothers this was definitely a period of establishing their position as one of the most talented leading European rhythm sections in parallel to their ever growing career as composers.

It is great to have this album finally available, thanks to the persistence of the Oles Brothers and of course Maciej KarlowskiFind albums by this artist of FSR, who finally managed to bring this saga to a happy end. The album includes the liner notes by American critic Art Lange, which were written for the intended release on Hatology in 2011, so even that piece of the puzzle was saved. Enjoy!

LAUREN NEWTON ~ FILIGREE
HATOLOGY 519 (Barcode: 752156051923) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1982 Released: 1998

American born but resident in Europe vocalist / composer Lauren NewtonFind albums by this artist is undoubtedly one of the most important innovators of the modern vocal idiom in Jazz and Improvised Music. After moving to Europe from her native Oregon, she became a founding member of the legendary Vienna Art OrchestraFind albums by this artist and later joined forces with other vocal innovators: Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist (from Poland), Jeanne LeeFind albums by this artist (from the US but also active in Europe), Jay ClaytonFind albums by this artist and Bobby McFerrinFind albums by this artist (both from the US) forming the legendary vocal ensemble Vocal SummitFind albums by this artist in 1982. This album is a long overdue reissue of her debut recording, initially released under the title "TimbreFind albums with this title". Accompanied by vibraphonist David FriedmanFind albums by this artist, bassist Thomas StabenowFind albums by this artist and drummer Manfred KnielFind albums by this artist, Newton delivers a breathtaking set of her own compositions, using her completely unique vocal and improvisational techniques. The reissue also adds a most valuable and excellent bonus track. The overall effect of this music is absolutely overwhelming and for me raises precious memories of hearing her perform both with the Vienna Art Orchestra and Vocal Summit, as well as our conversations together. Don´t miss the opportunity of this gem being available again, probably for a short while. Wholeheartedly recommended to all open-minded listeners!

PER HENRIK WALLIN ~ PROKLAMATION I / FAREWELL TO SWEDEN
HATOLOGY 563 (Barcode: 752156056324) ~ SWEDEN ~ Jazz

Recorded: 200 - 2001 Released: 2002

Brilliant Swedish pianist / composer Per Henrik WallinFind albums by this artist remains relatively unknown to most Jazz enthusiast, surely those outside of Europe, but his genius and incredible inventiveness, creativity and virtuosity surely deserve a wider recognition (Wallin sadly died in 2005). These two albums capture him in intimate settings of a duo with drummer Sven-Åke JohanssonFind albums by this artist (first CD) and a trio with bassist Peter JansonFind albums by this artist and drummer Leif WennerströmFind albums by this artist (second CD). Although associated with the European Free Jazz movement, Wallin always displays his admiration for early Jazz pianists / composers, traces of which are often apparent in his music. These two performances are quite different, whereas the first one is completely spontaneously created, the second returns to more "conventional" approach of playing composed music (mostly by Wallin with a few interpretations of standards). But regardless of the setting, the music is always fascinating and testifies as to the incredibly high level of European Jazz in general and Free Jazz / Improvised Music in particular. Warmly recommended, this is brilliant stuff from start to finish!

FRANZ KOGLMANN ~ L`HEURE BLEUE
HATOLOGY 571 (Barcode: 752156057123) ~ AUSTRIA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1991 Released: 2003

This is a long overdue reissue of the beautiful album by Austrian trumpeter / composer Franz KoglmannFind albums by this artist, one of the most important representatives of European Free Jazz scene. The album includes two separate sessions, one with a quartet, which includes the wonderful veteran British clarinetist Tony CoeFind albums by this artist (definitely one of top world clarinet players), guitarist Burkhard StanglFind albums by this artist and bassist Klaus KochFind albums by this artist, and the other a duet with pianist Misha MengelbergFind albums by this artist. Most of the music is composed by Koglmann with a few compositions by other arranged by him. The album presents a wonderful atmosphere of melodic approach to modern Jazz, mixed with improvised passages and highly individualistic soloing. All the musicians perform beautifully, especially Coe, who has been my favorite for decades. This album is accessible to most Jazz listeners, well beyond the Free Jazz genre, as its gentle approach and deep aesthetics transcendent musical borders. Superb stuff!

JOHN ZORN ~ COBRA
HATOLOGY 580 (Barcode: 752156058021) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1985 - 1986 Released: 2002

This is a long overdue reissue of the legendary album by American musician / composer / bandleader John ZornFind albums by this artist, one of the most iconic figures of the late 20th Century Avant-Garde and music experimentation scenes. "CobraFind albums with this title" is one of the earlier monumental works by Zorn, which established him as a member of the "major" league of contemporary composers, such as Morton FeldmanFind albums by this artist, Frederic RzewskiFind albums by this artist, Karlheinz StockhausenFind albums by this artist and other icons of the "new" serious contemporary music. Many of the compositional devices used by his contemporaries are present here, as the music is basically a freely improvised collage of sounds made by electronic, electric and acoustic instruments and human voices. In places it is similar to musique concrète, in others to an ambient soundtrack, and so on, changing constantly. However, what sets it apart from most Avant-Garde music is an intrinsic connection to Jazz and Rock, evident clearly at places, especially in phrases played by the electric guitars (played by Bill FrisellFind albums by this artist, Arto LindseyFind albums by this artist and Elliott SharpFind albums by this artist. This album includes two quite different versions of the music, the earlier one recorded live and the slightly later one recorded in the studio. It´s fascinating to compare the two, as they are truly revealing as to the process of music creation in an improvised environment. This is not an easy listening experience and it was never intended to be one – total open-mindedness is absolutely required, but the intellectual reward is exhilarating and elating. Come on you brave-hearted…

TRAPIST ~ HIGHWAY MY FRIEND
HATOLOGY 586 (Barcode: 752156058625) ~ AUSTRIA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2000 Released: 2002

The trio TrapistFind albums by this artist led by Austrian percussionist / electronic artist / composer Martin BrandlmayrFind albums by this artist with guitarist Martin SiewertFind albums by this artist and bassist Joe WilliamsonFind albums by this artist is one of contemporary Improvised Music most respected outfits. This album, their debut recording, captures them live performing their music using their respective instruments in a most unusual way as well as electronics and computers. The result is an experimental and strange amalgam of noises and sounds, which represents the extreme Avant-Garde of not only Jazz but also Rock and other contemporary genres. Completely devoid of any structure or concept, this is more like a group thought process expressed in sounds. Listeners looking for melody and harmony will have to look elsewhere, but the adventurous and courageous ones might find here just what they´re looking for.

DAVE LIEBMAN ~ COLORS
HATOLOGY 600 (Barcode: 752156060024) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1998 Released: 2003

Although rarely in the limelight, American saxophonist / composer Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist has been one of the most consistently outstanding Jazz musicians in the last four decades. From his recordings with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist in the early stages of his career and later on as a leader of his own groups, his outstanding contribution to modern music is unquestionable. His stylistic versatility, deeply aesthetic approach to music as an Art Form and obvious virtuosity, all these combined with his charming personality (which I´ve been privileged to witness first hand) amalgamate into a unique and exceptional Artist. This album presents Liebman "in flagrante delicto", metaphorically making love to his instrument while performing a set of solo pieces. Unaccompanied solo performances are always the "naked truth", which exposes the artist totally and is completely unforgiving towards any attempts to fake artistry. Liebman has nothing to hide of course; on the contrary his solo statements are even more powerful than his performances with other musicians. This is his second solo recording, preceded by the album "The TreeFind albums with this title" recorded in the early 1990s. As usual, Liebman forays into uncharted territory with his beautiful vistas, charming the listener like a snake trainer and keeping him in trace. This incredible music, in spite of being potentially difficult, works like a charm and I can´t imagine any sensitive listener not falling under its spell. Brilliant stuff!

ANTHONY BRAXTON ~ PERFORMANCE (QUARTET) 1979
HATOLOGY 610 (Barcode: 752156061021) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1979 Released: 2007

This is a long overdue reissue (actually 2nd reissue) of the legendary album by American musician / composer / bandleader Anthony BraxtonFind albums by this artist, one of the most iconic figures of the late 20th Century Free Jazz and Avant-Garde music scene and probably the most important Jazz pioneer in the post John ColtraneFind albums by this artist era. The album captures a live recording of the Braxton´s quartet at the Willisau Jazz Festival in Switzerland, with him playing saxophones and clarinet, accompanied by trombonist Ray AndersonFind albums by this artist, bassist John LindbergFind albums by this artist and percussionist Thurman BarkerFind albums by this artist. The music includes seven original compositions by Braxton, performed continuously in two extended parts. The level of virtuosity in interplay is simply astounding and this album surely deserves an honorable place in any serious Free Jazz collection. The intercontinental meeting of improvising forces and talents works beautifully, soaring to previously undiscovered heights. This is an absolutely essential example of Free Jazz, for those who are connoisseurs of the genre, which is not to be missed, especially for the third time around.

ANTHONY BRAXTON (+ DUKE ELLINGTON) ~ CONCEPT OF FREEDOM
HATOLOGY 614 (Barcode: 752156061427) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2005

This album presents the compositions by two of America´s most iconic Jazz composers: Anthony BraxtonFind albums by this artist and Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist. Although seemingly totally separated and different, the works of these two composers are reflections of their respective eras. Ellington symbolizes the sophistication of the Jazz Art Form at its peak; at least as far as Jazz composition is concerned, and marks the turning point of Jazz, when its musical qualities finally reached the level of complexity and sophistication of the Classical Music heritage. Braxton symbolizes the next giant step in the development of Jazz, when it finally freed itself from any preconceptions and limitations, concentrating on its intrinsic quality, i.e. improvisation. Side by side, these compositions can certainly compliment each other, especially when performed by an excellent quartet of European musicians, two of which have recorded Braxton´s music before under his supervision: Swiss trombonist Roland DahindenFind albums by this artist and pianist Hildegard KleebFind albums by this artist with Greek violinist Dimitris PolisoidisFind albums by this artist and Austrian electronic musician Robert HöldrichFind albums by this artist. The performances are virtuosic and the music, although difficult and demanding, offers besides the obvious challenges also many hidden treasures associated with contemporary Improvised Music. For serious listeners only!

The two saxophonists share the leadership on equal footing, playing both individually and collectively with passion and almost telepathic rapport. The material, which includes a mixture of tunes written by Liebman and Eskelin with standards composed by Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, Tadd DameronFind albums by this artist, Lee KonitzFind albums by this artist and Cole PorterFind albums by this artist, all freshly arranged, is truly inspiring and moves freely between "straightforward" modern jazz and free improvisation. The technical skills of the musicians are astounding and the collective performances breathtaking. The album is a perfect example of superb contemporary Jazz, which successfully avoids the traps of trying to be "likeable" and stays faithful to the principles of artistic expression and exploration. Liebman´s career is an example of dedication to one´s true vocation and his consistently excellent work over the years is a beacon for future generations of Jazz players, with this album being no exception. JOHN CARTER / BOBBY BRADFORD ~ SEEKING
HATOLOGY 620 (Barcode: 752156062028) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2006

This long overdue reissue of the legendary debut album by the quartet led by saxophonist / clarinetist / flautist / composer John CarterFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Bobby BradfordFind albums by this artist, with Tom WilliamsonFind albums by this artist on bass and Bruz FreemanFind albums by this artist on drums, is a tribute to the great era of American Jazz, when groundbreaking music was being created there on momentous scale. The quartet was operating under the cooperative name New Art Jazz EnsembleFind albums by this artist, typical of the period´s social / philosophical climate of unity and cooperation on one hand and high appreciation of individual expression and genius on the other. The music expands the tradition already established by Free Jazz pioneers like Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist, Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, but is completely unique and refreshing. Carter´s virtuosity (my favorite being his clarinet playing) and compositional skills place him immediately at the spearhead of the burgeoning musical revolution taking place at the time, a position he would firmly keep up for decades to come. The interplay between Carter and Branford is reminiscent of the superb dialogue between Ornette Coleman and Don CherryFind albums by this artist, but the level of telepathic conversation seems to be even more intimate. The most amazing aspect of the album is its total lack of aggressiveness; the music tickles the intellect constantly rather than banging the listener right on his head in an attempt to create a shock treatment affect, an approach often used by other Free Jazz / Avant-Garde players. As a result the music is listenable even to a less experienced Jazz enthusiast, who might find most of other Free Jazz experimentation too overwhelming or aesthetically shocking. In retrospect this album is a Jazz masterpiece in every respect and a worthy addition to every serious music collection. Having it available again is a true blessing and a new chance to get acquainted with a true lost treasure.

MIKE WESTBROOK ~ ON DUKE`S BIRTHDAY

This is a long overdue reissue of the superb album by British pianist / composer / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist and his orchestra, paying tribute to the genius of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist, the great American Jazz composer. In contrast to most tribute albums, Westbrook does not present his interpretations or new arrangements of Ellington´s music, but composes completely new music himself, which relates to the many complex aspects of "Ellintonia" such as harmony and melody, in spirit rather than literally to his music. QUEST ~ REDEMPTION – QUEST LIVE IN EUROPE

The meeting between saxophonist Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist and pianist Richie BeirachFind albums by this artist in early 1970s established not only an excellent musical cooperation, as documented by the albums they recorded together, but also a deep personal friendship. Later the pair joined forces with two Jazz giants, bassist George MrazFind albums by this artist and drummer Al FosterFind albums by this artist, forming a quartet, which was named QuestFind albums by this artist, and which recorded the debut album under that name in 1981. HATOLOGY 644 (Barcode: 752156064428) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1978 Released: 2009

This is a long overdue reissue of the legendary album by American musician / composer / bandleader Anthony BraxtonFind albums by this artist, one of the most iconic figures of the late 20th Century Free Jazz and Avant-Garde music scene and probably the most important Jazz pioneer in the post John ColtraneFind albums by this artist era. The album captures a live concert, recorded in Germany (Braxton was always an icon in Europe, and hardly ever taken seriously at home), with Braxton conducting a huge orchestra performing his compositions. The orchestra includes some of the most important and celebrated Free Jazz players, such as trumpeters Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Leo SmithFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Vinny GoliaFind albums by this artist and Marty EhrlichFind albums by this artist, trombonists Ray AndersonFind albums by this artist and George LewisFind albums by this artist, pianist Marilyn CrispellFind albums by this artist, bassist John LindbergFind albums by this artist and many others. The sound and overall effect of the orchestra performing this music is simply magnificent, and leaves the listener completely dazed. Definitely a masterpiece!

OLES BROTHERS / THEO JORGENSMANN ~ ALCHEMIA
HATOLOGY 646 (Barcode: 752156064626) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

This is the fourth album by Polish Improvised Music heroes, brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (drums) collectively know as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, with the German clarinetist / composer Theo JorgensmannFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live at the legendary Alchemia club in Krakow, which in the first decade of the new Millennium served as one of the epicenters of the Polish Avant-Garde scene, and includes five original compositions: two composed by Jorgensmann, one each by Marcin Oles and Bartlomiej Oles and one co-composed by them both.

This music was recorded just two months after the live recording that produced the "Live In Poznan 2006Find albums with this title" album and covers mostly the same material and yet these two dates are quite dramatically different. The Alchemia concert is a pinnacle of this trio´s cooperation at the time, summarizing a process of development from the first encounter to the close intimacy achieved herein. The relaxed and contemplative atmosphere of this session and the expanded versions of the compositions, which are present on this album, create a magic moment which was encapsulated for eternity. The special ambience of the club itself might be also responsible for the extraordinary amalgam achieved here by the trio.

This music is also much more "organized" than that presented on the earlier recordings, with a clear emphasis on the compositions and structures rather than the on improvised parts that dominate the earlier recordings. Of course there is plenty of improvisation and wonderful expanded solo sections, but the music, at all times, stays within clearly defined melodic and rhythmic patterns, even at the very climax and up-tempo frenzy. This wonderful balance between the freedom of improvisation and the structure, mostly imposed by the rhythm section, is absolutely stunning.

Of course the individual abilities of these extraordinary musicians are at full display throughout this album, as always. It´s worth to listen to this album several times, each time concentrating on just one of the participants in order to be able to fully absorb their individual contributions. But of course only the glorious threesome achieves the full synergy, and the proper way to listen is to try and absorb this synergy into our brains.

This is surely one of the finest examples of the European Avant-Garde scene at the time it was recorded and a true gem of an album, which has but a few equals. The fact that the prestigious Swiss Hat HutFind albums on this label label decided to include it in its roster is surely an acknowledgment of eminence, which in this case was fully earned. The hearsay has it that Hat Hut has another Oles Brothers session in their vaults that remains unreleased – now that is a crying´ shame!

This is a long overdue reissue of the great album by the trio Clusone 3Find albums by this artist, which includes saxophonist / clarinetist Michael MooreFind albums by this artist, cellist Ernst ReijsegerFind albums by this artist and drummer Han BenninkFind albums by this artist. The trio plays their interpretations of standards composed by Irving BerlinFind albums by this artist, definitely a "strange" choice by musicians usually associated with Free Jazz / Improvised Music. Although Berlin´s memorable melodies are being stretched and stripped down to the bone by the trio, their magic is still there for the trained ear. Enthusiasts of the genre will find this both fascinating and stimulating, as these are superb players and improvisers doing what they do best. Recommended!

MIKE WESTBROOK ~ WESTBROOK-ROSSINI
HATOLOGY 661 (Barcode: 752156066125) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1986 Released: 2008

British pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist has been a most prominent figure on the European Jazz and Avant-Garde scene since the 1960s and his enormous contribution to music is immeasurable. His numerous recordings, varying in scale from solo piano to large orchestras have always been a source of inspiration and full of deeply aesthetic statements, often combining music with European literary legacy. This recording, which is somewhat unusual for Westbrook, finds him interpreting classical music, namely excerpts from operas by Italian composer Gioachino RossiniFind albums by this artist ("William Tell", "The Barber Of Seville", "Otello"), completely rearranging and altering the source and shaping it into a new mold, mixed with some additions of his own. The music is performed by a septet, which includes Westbrook on piano and tuba, his wife and faithful musical companion Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist on vocals, piccolo and tenor horn, Lindsay CooperFind albums by this artist on soprano saxophone, Peter WhymanFind albums by this artist on alto saxophone, Paul NiemanFind albums by this artist on trombone, Andy GrappyFind albums by this artist on tuba and Peter FaircloughFind albums by this artist on drums. The overall effect is absolutely stunning, full of brilliant ideas, breathtaking performances and a dash of humor, which often characterizes Westbrook´s work. Stylistically the music covers everything from New Orleans marching bands to a New York loft Avant-Garde performance, with a truly remarkable fluidity and brilliance. This is a treat for true connoisseurs of madcap but genius music, intellectually challenging and culturally transcending the borders of time and space. A true masterpiece! The original release of this album was unfortunately unavailable for ages and the new edition is a godsend for music lovers.

VIENNA ART ORCHESTRA ~ THE MINIMALISM OF ERIK SATIE
HATOLOGY 671 (Barcode: 752156067122) ~ AUSTRIA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1983 - 1984 Released: 2010

The Austrian modern Big Band / ensemble Vienna Art OrchestraFind albums by this artist is probably the most ambitious gathering of European Jazz musicians ever attempted and one of the most (probably the most) successful effort of this kind. Led by the charismatic composer / arranger / bandleader Mathias RüeggFind albums by this artist, who is a Master of his craft and who writes most of the music performed by the ensemble, the Vienna Art Orchestra is a revelation. The scope of music created by the Vienna Art Orchestra in the last three decades amounts to a gigantic body of work unparalleled by any other of his contemporaries. The orchestra members are all top Austrian Jazz players, as well as many guest musicians from other European countries. This very special project finds the ensemble reworking a set of compositions by the brilliant French composer Erik SatieFind albums by this artist. Satie´s short (minimalist) compositions, as beautiful as they are, are expanded and rearranged by Rüegg and become magnificent, presenting a perfect amalgamation of Jazz and modern Classical Music. The band includes the incredible vocals by Lauren NewtonFind albums by this artist, in addition to numerous superb musicians, such as saxophonists Harry SokalFind albums by this artist, Roman SchwallerFind albums by this artist and many others. The music is absolutely breathtaking and brilliant from start to finish; every moment catches the listener completely unprepared and leaves him absolutely stunned when the album is over. This is an utmost case in point of the European way to do things, which places all American Big Bands miles in the rear. An absolute must to any serious Jazz listener and an everlasting example of musical ingenuity. Essential!

MIKE WESTBROOK ~ STARCROSS BRIDGE
HATOLOGY 754 (Barcode: 752156075424) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is a solo piano album by British pianist / composer / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist. This album was recorded at the same venue in Paris, where Westbrook recorded his previous solo piano album "ParisFind albums with this title" eighteen months earlier, this time without any people in the audience. It presents fourteen pieces, grouped into three chapters and a postscript; some composed by Westbrook or co-composed by him and his wife Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist, others coming from such diverse sources as The Beatles or familiar Jazz standards. The music was edited and mixed by the lamented Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and offers a wonderfully detailed sound quality.

Westbrook solo piano recordings, starting with the album "PianoFind albums with this title" recorded over four decades ago and now expanded by "Paris" and this album, are a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with the most intimate side of Westbrook the pianist. His work with small and especially so with large ensembles are first and foremost a showcase of his compositional achievements and his role as a pianist is often overshadowed by the intensity of these works and perhaps also a tendency to put other instrumentalists (or vocalists) in the limelight. The solo piano recordings are therefore the most exposed instances of Westbrook´s piano playing and as such most revealing.

The choice of material obviously reflects Westbrook´s admiration of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist and of course his love for his wife and musical partner Kate Westbrook. In many respects, at least to me, this album is a reflection of his life and his musical path, seen in retrospect and expressed with extraordinary finesse and emotion. Age does this to you, grabbing you by the throat and forcing you to look back at your life and take an account of it. I can hardly imagine a more beautiful way to do this than what Westbrook manages to do here.

The way Westbrook touches the keyboard is also quite extraordinary. The use of silence and pause makes all the difference and he is an absolute Master of timing, which results in the music being as much a consequence of the notes he plays as of the silent moments separating them. The "slow motion" effect he uses here so brilliantly achieves the same effect as watching a movement in slow motion – it allows a much higher resolution of the separate notes and their mutual relationships, which would not be possible when the notes follow each other in rapid progression.

There is no doubt that Westbrook, despite his advanced age, is till very much a leading force of the British / European Jazz scene and his prolific and blissfully diverse recordings being released at a steady paste are constantly a source of musical Artistry of the highest caliber, for which we are all thankful. God Bless!
