The music continues the direction pioneered by Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, with modal compositions and usage of electric instruments, but is spiced it with the addition of African rhythms and funk (to be expanded in the next edition of his group and the recording of the legendary Head HuntersFind albums with this title album), creating a highly expressionist soundscapes of rare beauty. It is commendable that two separate Majors (ColumbiaFind albums on this label and Warner Bros.Find albums on this label) managed to come to terms and release these albums in one Box Set, which is a rare phenomenon indeed. The albums are remastered and include a plethora of bonus tracks, which makes this particular Box Set one of the best ever. This incredible collection of music is simply bigger than life in every respect. There are very few artists, who managed to produce over a span of over five decades such consistently superb material and stay relevant and up to date, if not lead, the changing styles, fads and fashions. Simon managed to do all this simply because he always stayed honest and loyal to his own aesthetics and Artistic vision, ignoring in a way the musical world that gradually deteriorated around him. He was always a one man island of sanity, perfection, elegance and morality, unshaken and untouched by age and circumstance. As these albums show, Simon was always on the move, never resting on the crest of his success. He was one of the first American artists to discover and incorporate World Music into his Art, not as a passing fad but as part of his creative personality. South American music, African Music, Reggae and other World Music influences became over the years an integral part of his musical personality, mixed with the American Folk tradition which was his "Alma Mater". Of course we must not forget about Simon´s part in the Simon And GarfunkelFind albums by this artist duo, one of the finest American acts in the 1960s, which continued to perform well into the 21st Century. Over the years Simon performed with some of the best musicians in the world and from all over the world, which is well documented in this Box Set. There is no doubt that some of the most beautiful and meaningful songs ever written are included in this Box Set, being a preserved capsules of our Culture. Getting this Box Set might be the best money spent on music ever.

The group was a quartet, pioneering instrumental Rock and their hits influenced more young (at the time) people to pick up the guitar that any other group in music history. They were also the backing band of singer Cliff RichardFind albums by this artist, which at the time meant more or less to be at the top of the world. These albums present The Shadows on their own, separate from their association with Cliff Richard, playing mostly instrumental pieces, covers as well as original compositions. Their distinctive style and sound remain fresh half a Century later, still sounding pretty unique today. The group´s lead guitarist Hank MarvinFind albums by this artist developed a completely inimitable style based on clean guitar sound with lots of echo and vibrato, which was later copied by millions of guitar player the world over. Musically these albums are of course on the easier side of the spectrum, with pretty melodies and catchy riffs, but listening attentively there is a lot of interesting stuff happening between the players, which is worth listening to, especially from such time perspective. These albums do not include the great hits of the band, which were released as singles or EPs, and are available elsewhere. They include the last album by the seminal group The MoveFind albums by this artist, the first album by the group Electric Light OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. ELOFind albums by this artist), which coexisted simultaneously with The Move in a "split personality" havoc with the same band members (Wood, Jeff LynneFind albums by this artist and Bev BevanFind albums by this artist) being in both groups, two solo albums by Wood and one album by Wood´s next group WizzardFind albums by this artist, spanning the period between 1971 and 1979. This selection is quite bizarre and misses the point by a mile, with the Move and ELO albums completely out of place in this Box Set. Wood recorded four solo albums, three albums with Wizzard and one with the Wizzo BandFind albums by this artist; some of these could have easily fit the bill to be included here replacing the Move and ELO albums. One we ignore the actual albums selection, the music included here is truly superb and pays tribute to one of British Rock´s greatest talents. Wood had a completely unique approach to Rock, which displayed elements of drama, theatrical expressiveness, satire and cabaret like presentation, all of which was eons ahead of its time. Forty years after it was recorded this music still sounds wonderfully weird and completely different from anything else. Wood´s ability to play almost every instrument he could lay his hands on is also pretty amazing. Overall this Box Set is a great opportunity to revisit some great music, for those of us who lived while it was happening and to discover it by those born too late to enjoy it in real time. Hopefully another Box Set will complete the Wood legacy properly. In the meantime enjoy this iconic zany / brilliant piece of Rock history. Highly recommended! The album presents eleven tracks, all of which are originals by Morrison. This was the 3rd album Morrison released in the 1980s and his last album released (originally) on Warner Bros.Find albums on this label label. Musically the album offers Morrison’s usual mix of Celtic, Blues, Folk, Gospel and Jazz influences, but since it offers several instrumental tracks, which is not typical, the Jazzy undercurrents are more dominant than ever. But he delivers, as usual, a mixture of cross-genre songs, all blessed by his outstanding ability to weave beautiful melodies and write heartfelt lyrics, like only a few others Artists are able to do. Overall, this is a piece of music that is worth being remembered, and although Morrison’s recorded legacy offers a few dozen releases, he never recorded a bad album and everything he ever put out is worth an honorable place in a decent record collection. It is one of those Artists you can never have too much of…

JIMMY WEBB ~ ORIGINAL ALBUM SERIES RHINO 081227955878 (Barcode: 081227955878) ~ USA ~ Classic Pop Recorded: 1970 - 1977 Released: 2015 This Box Set collects five (second to sixth) albums by the great American singer / songwriter Jimmy WebbFind albums by this artist, released between 1970 and 1977. Webb is one of the most influential figures on the American popular music scene, thanks to his phenomenal success as a songwriter. His albums, however, never really achieved much commercial success or recognition, which is a great pity as they are full of beautiful melodies and poetic lyrics. This is an excellent opportunity to re-discover them. Webb is also a very sensitive singer and his interpretations of the songs made famous by others, are often deeper and more interesting. The original albums are expanded with bonus material, which is rather immaterial as it consists of single versions or promo edits of the tunes already present on these albums. In order to read about the lineups and the significance of these albums please click on their titles to switch to their detailed descriptions. The booklet accompanying the Box Set includes a short essay by pianist / composer / writer Bob GluckFind albums by this artist, which also includes a few quotations taken from his book "You Will Know When You Get There: Herbie Hancock and the Mwandishi Band". The essay is pretty basic, which is rather sad as a serious analysis of this music would have been in place. I guess that there wasn´t any budget for a more extensive write-up or inclusion of live recordings by the band, which would have justified the existence of this Box Set and somehow compensated for buying this music one more time. Of course this is momentous music, which deserves to be heard and if this Box Set gets to be listened to by a younger generation of listeners, who missed this music when it was happening in real time, its goal was achieved. People who already own the original vinyl LPs or the earlier reissues (which are still available) can easily skip this. Overall this is a rather dodgy reissue / repackaging effort of fantastic music and hopefully will serve a greater good by just being out there for the asking.

During that same period Mendes also released albums for A&MFind albums on this label Records, mostly with a vocal group, which were much more popular and commercially successful. The Atlantic albums are more Jazz oriented and are one of the earliest examples of Jazz-World Fusion. Mendes gained popularity as one a several Brazilian artists, who swept the American music scene in the mid 1960s, popularizing the wonderful bossa nova movement. He combined his own composition with those of dozens of great bossa nova songwriters in Brazil, popularizing them in the USA. His various group included mostly Brazilian players, such as bassist Sebastiao NetoFind albums by this artist and drummers Chico BateraFind albums by this artist and Chico De SouzaFind albums by this artist, but he was often supported by top American Jazz players like trumpeter Art FarmerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Phil WoodsFind albums by this artist, flautist Hubert LawsFind albums by this artist and many others. Sometimes he also used extensive orchestral arrangements, which of course sounded pretty kitschy at times. In retrospect Mendes and other Brazilian musicians / composers were responsible for opening up the American musical scene to new sonic and rhythmic vistas, which also invigorated the American Jazz scene immensely at the time. These albums include many of the classic bossa nova evergreens, and still are great fun to listen to, even if they sound somewhat outdated due to relatively simplistic production and problematic sound quality. For bossa nova fans these are absolute classics, others might like to take a trip down the nostalgia lane; whatever the reason, this music still has a lot of charm and zest. Recommended! The fifth album included here, a double LP originally, "Terra BrasilisFind albums with this title" from 1980, presents a new look at some of Jobim´s most popular songs, rearranged for a Jazz combo and strings, which includes many "definite" versions of those songs. Both albums were arranged by Ogerman. Overall this is a very strange selection of material, which is far from ideal as a package, but nevertheless includes some absolutely divine music, which should not be missed by any serious music lover. As such, the album was often referred to as “the lost Miles Davis album”, until its release thirty-four years later, although some of the material was used on the last Davis’ album “Doo-BopFind albums with this title”. The album presents eleven tracks and features various studio musicians and singers, some of which are co-credited as authors of the music, in addition to Jazz musicians appearing on some tracks, like guitarist Mike SternFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Bob BergFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Adam HolzmanFind albums by this artist and others. The album cover features one of Miles Davis’ paintings. The music has very little to do with conventional / traditional Jazz per se, and marks Davis’ interest in Funk, Soul and Rap. The overall result is an amalgam of various Pop trends, spiced up by Davis’ incredible (as always) trumpet playing on top. Warner Bros. decision to scrap the album was completely justified at the time, as releasing the album would have damaged Miles’ Jazz reputation, surely in the eyes of his followers, which were not prepared for such radical change in style and sound. “Tutu” offered a much milder and more Jazz oriented alternative and opened the way to the “new” Miles Davis, and the albums that followed created a new image, which was embraced in time by most of his followers. Additionally, the album suffers from some production / sound problems, which were solved on those later albums. Overall, the album emphasizes the pioneering spirit of Miles Davis and his vision, which was always way ahead of the music scene, as in this case. His trumpet playing is as Godly as ever and most of the music here reflects perfectly the ever-evolving path he threaded, often quite alone. The album definitely deserves to be a part of the definitive Miles Davis collection!

His idiosyncratic voice knows no equals to this date and his heartfelt singing lost nothing of its magic touch. He was accompanied by the absolute crème de la crème of instrumentalists and his albums were carefully arranged and produced. In retrospect these six albums are all absolute gems, which lost nothing of their power of expression and intrinsic delicate beauty during the years that passed since they were recorded. Taylor´s music impersonates American Classic Rock at its best, incorporating, mostly subconsciously, elements of Country & Western, Blues, Jazz and other indigenous American music sources with Pop and Rock, creating a unique style of his own, but one that corresponded to the music made in America at the time by many other Artists like Crosby, Stills & NashFind albums by this artist, Joni MitchellFind albums by this artist, Carole KingFind albums by this artist, Carly SimonFind albums by this artist (to whom he was married at the time), Simon & GarfunkelFind albums by this artist, Stevie WonderFind albums by this artist and others. His solo albums never achieved commercial success, despite the fact that they were all excellent, which is a great pity. Reid´s completely original timbre of voice is one of the most unique in Rock history and his sensitivity and intelligence as a musicians were truly above most of his contemporaries. Reid incorporated in his music Blues and Soul influences, creating a long string of memorable performances over the years. He also cooperated with many first-rate musicians over time, like Graham NashFind albums by this artist, with whom he co-wrote songs and who produced his fourth album. When listening to these albums in retrospect it becomes obvious that success is blind as a bat, and in countless cases it prefers worthless twits to hidden geniuses. At least this music is now available again for future generations and hopefully it will be discovered by some and even properly appreciated. This is, after all, a great chapter in Rock´s history. Side Note: The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label and the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. LED ZEPPELIN ~ THE COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS WARNER BROS. 081227943899 (Barcode: 081227943899) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2016 This is an expanded reissue of the 1997 first edition of the music recorded by Led ZeppelinFind albums by this artist, the greatest Rock group of all times, for the BBC, entitled simply "The BBC SessionsFind albums with this title". This new edition adds a third CD to the original double CD release, which includes nine tracks, eight of which are previously unreleased. The package also includes new expanded liner notes, which include the original brief essay and a detailed list of all the six sessions the group recorded for the BBC and an index of songs, many of which appear several times on these three CDs. There is not much new one can say about this music. Five of the six sessions were recorded in 1969 (between March and June), following the release of their debut album and before the release of the second album, spanning just three months of the life of the group, which in most cases would have meant very little, but in the case of Led Zeppelin showed an almost daily progression of the band, which developed their style from Blues-Rock to a sophisticated, soaked in improvisation, full fledged Rock virtuosity. The last session recorded in April 1971, following the release of their fourth album, finds them completely transformed into the greatest Rock band ever, in the span of just two years. The newly added tracks are all worth they weight in gold as everything ever recorded by Led Zeppelin and the hordes of the band´s fans will embrace them wholeheartedly, however this release raises a set of questions, which someone should answer and be held responsible for: Why didn´t the original release include all this material? Why do we have to pay again for the two CDs we already have to get the third one with the new material? Why wasn´t the new release put together to present the six sessions in chronological order? Why the graphic designers forgot to put the track list on the packaging and it only appears on a sticker? Why did they also forget the barcode? And why oh why do they keep doing it again and again and again…? In short Warner Music Group, like all the Majors, simply doesn´t give a damn about the fans or anybody else for that matter, as long as the money keeps streaming in. Pathetic!

Following his iconic debut "Astral WeeksFind albums with this title" and its follow up "MoondanceFind albums with this title" Morrison recorded this album in a much more relaxed atmosphere, keeping the mood and instrumentation of "Moondance" intact, but easing up on the intensity. The album collects a few older songs Morrison wrote earlier on and others, which were newer but were not included on the first two albums. The Jazzy arrangements utilizing brass and a Funky rhythm section are already his trademarks, which will continue for decades. Morrison´s vocal performances are, as usual, completely unique and incomparable to any other vocalist active at the time or since. Of course it’s the strengths of the material that makes every album by Morrison, this one included, an instant classic. His somewhat throaty delivery and his modulations create a one of its kind sonic experience, which is absolutely mesmerizing and his melodies and lyrics are all a class of their own. In retrospect this album is somewhat forgotten and neglected in the overall sizeable and incredibly rich Morrison´s legacy, which is a pity, as it is a charming gem of an album with so much great music within it. Hopefully this new edition will remedy the neglect and return it to its proper and well earned status. The remastered sound and the bonus tracks are a very good reason to make this album a part of everybody´s music collection, as usual better late than never. Do not hesitate!

The last track, which features Pastorius, is particularly interesting to his many fans, as his playing here is absolutely stunning. Overall, fans of Jazz-World Fusion with Brazilian flavoring should love this album, as all his other recordings, and of course he is an absolute genius as far as mixing the Brazilian elements with Jazz is concerned.

The two albums he recorded with Beck and his first two solo albums are still among my favorite Rock albums which I like to revisit from time to time. Stewart´s sensational career spanning more than five decades is an exceptional story of 20th Century music and he still manages to move his audiences now, past his 70th Birthday. Old Rockers die hard and he is one of those who keep the memory of past decades alive. When Stewart started to record the "Great American SongbookFind albums with this title" series, he was viscously ridiculed by "critics", especially those from Jazz circles, who considered his interpretation of standards to be a profanity. In truth Stewart sang these standards better than most contemporary American Jazz singers. Stewart proved over time that he fits comfortably into a wide variety of formats and genres within the Rock and Pop idioms. His sensitivity to melody and his ability to play around with his voice are truly remarkable and basically unparalleled by any other vocalist. Therefore his position in Rock history is well deserved and fully justified. This wonderful Box Set is an obvious labor of love, which happens only thanks to dedicated people, who are willing to spend endless hours and move mountains to do what they think is the right thing. In this case producer Andy ZaxFind albums by this artist, who listened for endless hours to the original recording tapes of the albums made by Stewart starting with his third album "Every Picture Tells A StoryFind albums with this title" from 1971 and right through the album "When We Were The New BoysFind albums with this title" from 1998, collecting all the unreleased material from these sessions and presenting them all here, 63 tracks spread over four CDs, all beautifully remastered. Stewart sings his heart out all the way through, as he always does, with his beautiful and unique throaty voice never letting the listener down. Mind you these are outtakes, alternate takes and other material which is supposed to be of secondary quality and importance, but you would never guess this is the fact, as they are simply all classic Rod Stewart at his best. The CDs are beautifully packaged in a digibook format with a great booklet describing the music track by track and including many photographs. Stewart´s fans will find this a must of course, as all this material is nowhere else to be found, but honestly this is great Rock music which all music connoisseurs should find interesting.

Additional guest musicians are also present, playing mostly brass and percussion instruments. Although the two previous albums (Air ConditioningFind albums with this title and Second AlbumFind albums with this title) are both masterpieces, this one surpasses them both and is considered the strongest of the three. Way and Monkman (as usual) composed the music and it includes some truly visionary effects, like tape loops of Sonja’s voice and inventive use of synthesizers. Definitely a classic of the genre and one can certainly say that they went with a bang! Future incarnations of the band would be nowhere near the original even though the band tried to re-form several times.

The addition of vocalist Sonja KristinaFind albums by this artist, a remarkable singer with a unique voice, turned Curved Air into an outstanding creative musical unit. This album is considered to this very day one of the strongest debut Prog releases ever and the instrumental "Vivaldi With Cannons" turned into a Prog anthem. The original album was the first ever vinyl picture disk. A true Prog classic.

Recorded shortly after Hancock left the Miles Davis group, it contains music he wrote for a TV series, rearranged for a jazz sextet. The album presents twelve songs, nine of which were co-written by Stewart and Savigar (one also by Swinford) and three are arrangements of songs by other songwriters. The songs are connected into a continuous stream of sound without the usual pauses between them. I first fell under the spell of Stewart’s idiosyncratic voice when I heard him fronting the Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist group in 1967 and this “love affair” is still very much on. His long and convoluted career produced many albums of various quality, but his vocals always were, and still are, completely amazing and lost nothing of their uniqueness and power, which is pretty astounding. Personally I most enjoy his early albums and The Great American Songbook series, but honestly Stewart never sung a wrong note in his life. He is a superb interpreter of songs written by other great songwriters, and in my book he stands proudly next to another British Rock icon, Joe CockerFind albums by this artist, both born only a few months apart. This new album, created amidst the pandemic, is one of the best efforts of his late career. The songs are all solid and well written, especially the ballads, and are a true joy to listen to. On a few songs the contemporary arrangements are a tad artificial, and Stewart still sounds the best just accompanied by a piano, like on the title song. His heartbreaking balladry is still completely unappalled. Overall, for an artist with six decades of musical legacy, Stewart still sounds as sweet and sour as he ever did and combined with the fine songs he sings here, this album is pure unadulterated musical delight. Hats off!

The band decided to take this a step further and augmented the concert footage with fantasy sequences, behind-the-stage scenes and at-home glimpses of all four heroes, creating what might be considered as one of the first major scale video-clips. Regardless of the fact if this additional material is great cinematography (a debate that belongs elsewhere), the overall effect works very well and most importantly depicts the era where Rock musicians were almighty Superheroes. But of course the film also includes a brilliant performance and some of the best Rock music ever recorded. In contrast to other Brazilian musicians / composers, who represented certain Brazilian localized styles, like samba or bossa nova, Nascimento always presented the essence of Brazilian music and above all its spirit, full of melodic, lyrical melancholy. His exquisite melodies are often among the finest pieces of music created by man. From his early days Nascimento was connected with Jazz and his early albums are all superb pioneering examples of Jazz-World Fusion. These later albums, included here, are still very jazzy and feature many distinguished Jazz musicians from Brazil and other parts of the world. These albums were recorded while Purim was at the peak of her popularity in the US, and she flirts with some Smooth Jazz and Latin Jazz material, in addition to her usual Brazilian Jazz, but they are nevertheless still absolutely gorgeous. Some of the best US Jazz musicians at the time accompany her on these albums, including of course her husband drummer / percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, bassist Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist, keyboardists George DukeFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist and numerous others. To this very day Purim is one of the most important Jazz vocalist of all time, a pioneer of the Brazilian Jazz wave that swept the world in the 1970s and a very gifted songwriter as well. She is one of my favorite vocalists and I am incredibly happy to have had the opportunity to meet her several times. Overall, these are excellent vocal Jazz / Jazz-World Fusion albums, which are absolutely an essential addition to every Vocal Jazz collection and which lost absolutely nothing of their brilliance over time. The reissue is a most welcomed opportunity to grab a copy of the them. Purim’s many followers need no encouragement of course and many young Jazz vocalists can learn a lot from these recordings. Sublime stuff!

IDES OF MARCH ~ FRIENDLY STRANGERS: THE WARNER BROS. RECORDINGS WOUNDED BIRD 6007 (Barcode: 664140600720) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2018 This is a remastered / expanded reissue of the entire material recorded by the American Rock / Brass Rock band Ides Of MarchFind albums by this artist, which includes their first two albums “VehicleFind albums with this title” and “Common BondFind albums with this title” and numerous singles released on Warner Bros.Find albums on this label Records. Fronted by a charismatic vocalist / songwriter Jim PeterikFind albums by this artist, who wrote most of the band’s material, the band included a brass section, which gave them the Brass Rock sound. Some of the material uses orchestral arrangements. Following the first two albums, Ides Of March released two additional albums on RCAFind albums on this label and disbanded in 1973, but reunited in 1990 and are still active today. The music is a mixture of Pop, Rock and Brass Rock, with truly excellent songs by Peterik, who has the ability to weave wonderfully melodic songs, often more ambitious than the usual Pop material, especially when arranged with extended Brass Rock attires. Although rarely mentioned today, these two early albums are a wonderful reminder of the incredible level of American musicianship at time. Fans of early ChicagoFind albums by this artist and Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist albums should really enjoy this music, in all its splendor, which is completely absent on contemporary music scene. Overall, this is a wonderful reminder of how American Rock music sounded by the late 1960s / early 1970s, with Brass Rock being one of its most ambitious manifestations. Since Brass Rock recordings are relatively uncommon, this reissue is definitely a splendid opportunity to revive an interest in the genre’s history. Wholeheartedly recommended!
