TONY WILLIAMS ~ PLAY OR DIE
MOOSICUS 1214 (Barcode: 885513121424) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2022

This is a reissue / remaster of the little known album by American drummer / composer bandleader Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist recorded in Germany during his trio tour, which also included keyboardist Tom GrantFind albums by this artist and bassist Patrick O`HearnFind albums by this artist. The album presents five original compositions, two each by Williams and O`Hearn and one co-credited to all three musicians. The album was released by a small independent Swiss label and was never reissued since 1980, when it was recorded and originally released.

The music is typical power Fusion, that Williams played with his ensemble LifetimeFind albums by this artist, dominated by the keyboard / synthesizer sound and superb bass work by O`Hearn, who played a key role in Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist ensembles in the late 1970s. Williams adds his energetic and technically brilliant drumming for the entire duration, as expected.

The compositions are a bit sketchy and the trio’s limited instrumentation influences the result, which is a bit lackluster at times, mostly due to the inadequate work by Grant, but Fusion lovers should find this stuff interesting, especially since it was out of circulation for over forty years.

Overall, this is a long overdue reissue of a “lost” album by one of the greatest Jazz / Fusion drummers of all times and in view of his relatively limited recorded legacy as a leader, this reissue is definitely welcome, despite its limitations.

BILL BRUFORD / EARTHWORKS ~ LIVE AT THE SHAUBURG BREMEN 1987
MOOSICUS 1215 (Barcode: 885513121523) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1987 Released: 2022

This is an archival live album by the British Jazz drummer / composer / bandleader Bill BrufordFind albums by this artist and the first edition of his sensational quartet called EarthworksFind albums by this artist, which also included saxophonist Iain BallamyFind albums by this artist, pianist Django BatesFind albums by this artist and bassist Mick HuttonFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded by Radio Bremen in November 25, 1987, and offers ten tracks, all original compositions by the quartet members.

Bruford founded Earthworks in 1986 after spending almost twenty years as member of cutting edge Progressive Rock bands like YesFind albums by this artist (of which he was a founding member), King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, GenesisFind albums by this artist, U.K.Find albums by this artist and his own band called simply BrufordFind albums by this artist, returning to his Jazz roots. Earthworks comprised of the crème de la crème of the young British Jazz scene at the time and took the local as well as international scene by storm.

This live recording finds the quartet in absolute top form, over a year after their debut album was recorded and following extensive touring, which allowed them to develop the material and their unique musical approach. In contrast to expectations and speculations, Earthworks was a bona-fide Jazz quartet, which did not follow the Fusion path, which would have been more natural as a continuation of Bruford’s musical path up to that moment. Bellamy and Bates arrived from the sensational Loose TubesFind albums by this artist Big Band, which was one of British Jazz most surprising ensembles during the 1980, and Hutton was already a highly sought after young Jazz bassist on the local scene. Together they were simply unstoppable and the level of their performances was absolutely sensational. They were able to create a complex fury of sound, which was completely unprecedented on the British Jazz scene, and Bruford’s drumming behind Earthworks in as absolute peak of his career.

Overall, this album is a “missing link” in the Earthworks discography, from the period between the debut and the second album “Dig?Find albums with this title”, and of course an essential part in the Bruford discography, which none of his many fans will want to miss.

OREGON ~ 1974
MOOSICUS 1218 (Barcode: 885513121820) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2021

This is an archival live album by the legendary American quartet OregonFind albums by this artist, recorded in Germany by Radio Bremen. It presents the original lineup of the quartet with guitarist Ralph TownerFind albums by this artist, oboe and English horn player Paul McCandlessFind albums by this artist, bassist Glen MooreFind albums by this artist and percussionist / sitar player Collin WalcottFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents nine tracks, all composed by Towner, most of which are well over ten minutes in duration.

Oregon were undoubtedly one of the most eclectic, unique and revolutionary cross-genre American ensembles, which managed to combine Jazz improvisations with World Music, strongly influenced by Indian music, Classical Music, Avant-Garde and New Age and even Psychedelic and Space elements. The four members of the band were virtuosi on their respective instruments and their collective performances, which I managed to hear in person many times over the years, were simply magical.

Not surprisingly, Oregon achieved acclaim and Artistic recognition predominantly in Europe, where they toured extensively. Following the early years spent with VanguardFind albums on this label Records in the US, they later released their albums on several European labels, including ECMFind albums on this label, IntuitionFind albums on this label and CAM JazzFind albums on this label. The members of Oregon recorded and performed also as solo artists and members of other ensembles.

The music on this album is a wonderful document of the early period of Oregon, and offers a relaxed environment, which inspires the musicians to improvise intensively and extensively on the beautiful themes, which is much different to the same music appearing on the early studio albums. For Jazz-World Fusion enthusiasts this is some of the finest and most sophisticated embodiment of the genre. The enthusiastic audience seems to be well aware of the greatness of the hour.

Overall, this is a superb document of the Artistry represented by one of the finest American Jazz-World Fusion ensembles ever, captured in an ideal aura created by attentive and enthusiastic audience. For the many Oregon followers, this is an absolute must and a true revelation.

MICHAL URBANIAK ~ SOUND PIECES
MOOSICUS 1223 (Barcode: 885513122322) ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2023

This is an expanded 3CD reissue / remaster of the two albums, “Paratyphus BFind albums with this title” and “InactinFind albums with this title”, recorded for the small German label SpiegeleiFind albums on this label by the ensemble headed by Polish Jazz saxophonist / violinist / composer / bandleader Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist. The ensemble included also Urbaniak´s wife at the time, vocalist Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Adam MakowiczFind albums by this artist, bassists Pawel JarzebskiFind albums by this artist (on the 1st album) and Roman DylagFind albums by this artist (on the 2nd album), drummer Czeslaw BartkowskiFind albums by this artist and Yugoslav percussionist Branislav KovacevFind albums by this artist. The 1st album included five tracks, four by Urbaniak and one by Makowicz, and the 2nd album included seven tracks, all composed by Urbaniak. Both albums are now combined as the twelve tracks of CD1.

CD2 and CD3 of this album present three tracks each, recorded live by Radio Bremen during a club performance on January 21, 1972, a few months before the two studio albums were recorded, and later released in 1973. The material covers the same material that was later recorded in the studio. The lineup playing live is the same as on “Paratyphus B”, except for Kovacev, who is not present.

“Inactin” has several similarities to the live album Urbaniak and his ensemble recorded in 1973 in Poland, released as part of the legendary Polish Jazz series (Vol. 36) and entitled "In ConcertFind albums with this title", which in retrospect was one of Polish Jazz most significant and pivotal recordings and a giant milestone towards the discovery of Jazz-Rock Fusion on the local scene. Those two albums share several of the compositions and almost identical core lineup and most importantly the unique stylistic approach, which mixed Jazz, Rock, Electronics and Free Jazz in a way never previously attempted.

The Spiegelei contact, which produced the two albums, happened as a result of the success Urbaniak achieved in Europe touring there extensively in the early 1970s, which culminated with his appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971 and winning there a first prize as instrumentalist, at the time still playing the saxophone. The switch to violin, which was Urbaniak´s original instrument, changed his career dramatically and marked the new period in his career. The entire period marks a turbulent time for Urbaniak and Dudziak, with their dramatic emigration to USA soon after.

The music Urbaniak´s group created was definitely one of the most innovative and adventurous experiments done at the time, surely by any musicians originating from behind the Iron Curtain. The freedom of expression, which originated in the Free Jazz, mixed with the use of electric instruments and electronic voice enhancements, emerged as some of the most exciting sounds then, and to same extent even today, almost five decades later. Urbaniak used Polish folk motifs and uneven meters to make things even more exciting and Dudziak´s visionary usage of the human voice was eons ahead of its time. In retrospect her performances on this album remain unmatched to this very day, again five decades later.

In retrospect the two Spiegelei albums and the three albums Urbaniak recorded for ColumbiaFind albums on this label in the USA during the years immediately after his arrival there remain to this very day as his strongest statements, with the body of work created by him and his groups in the early 1970s being unsurpassed.

The album´s liner notes are pretty sketchy and such significant reissue surely deserves much better. Nevertheless, this is an iconic piece of music and as such deserves to be listened to today, after being unavailable for a scandalously long period of time.

Overall, this album is a dramatic statement in Jazz history, serving as a beacon to the fact that by the time it was recorded, Jazz development moved from America to Europe, never to return again. This music is so much advanced over anything happening beyond the pond, already at that time, and the fact that it originates from Easter Europe, from behind the Iron Curtain, proves that it has been finally liberated from American supremacy, or even perhaps enslavement. Any Jazz lover, who is not aware of this music, and sadly a vast majority is in that position, has very little understanding as what Jazz Music is all about.

VOLKER KRIEGEL ~ SCHONE AUSSICHTEN
MOOSICUS 1308 (Barcode: 885513130822) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1982 - 1983 Released: 2019

This is a reissue / remaster / expanded edition of an album by the iconic German Jazz / Fusion guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded with the participation of the top German Jazz / Fusion musicians active at the time: saxophonist Frank LoefFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Wolfgang SchluterFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Thomas BettermannFind albums by this artist, bassist Hans Peter StroerFind albums by this artist, percussionist / drummer Ernst StroerFind albums by this artist and drummers Junior WeerasingheFind albums by this artist and Michael Di PasquaFind albums by this artist. The original album presents eight original compositions by Kriegel and Hans Peter Stroer and was released in 1983 on the MoodFind albums on this label Records label. This reissue is expanded by three tracks, which were recorded in 1982 as soundtrack for an experimental short film.

The music is an excellent example of the advanced Fusion music that was created in Europe in the early 1980s, which incorporated complex rhythm changes and World Music influences, advancing the genre into new areas. Although featuring Kriegel’s brilliant guitar playing, it presents an ensemble sound rather than emphasizing the guitar as the leading instrument.

Overall, this is wonderful European Fusion album, performed by top German Jazz musicians active in the 1980s, as well as an important addition to the recorded legacy by Kriegel, which is carefully curated by his archive, which hopefully will be released in its entirety in time. For guitar lovers and European Fusion enthusiasts this is an absolute must!

VOLKER KRIEGEL ~ BITON GROOVES
MOOSICUS 1309 (Barcode: 885513130921) ~ GERMANY ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1982 Released: 2019

This is an archival 2CD album presenting studio recordings by the iconic German Jazz / Fusion guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. These recordings were done at the Biton Studios in Frankfurt between 1974 and 1982 and released on five LP albums on the studio’s own label, which are all remastered and included in this reissue. These albums were released as library music for use by Radio / TV / Film industry and did not specify Kriegel’s name or any other details, since he was at the time under contact with MPSFind albums on this label Records. The album presents thirty-seven original compositions, most by Kriegel and some by his band members, which were of course the same musicians that recorded with him the albums released by MPS over the years: keyboardists Rainer BruninghausFind albums by this artist and Thomas BettermannFind albums by this artist, bassists Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and Hans Peter StroerFind albums by this artist, percussionist Peter GigerFind albums by this artist, and drummers Klaus WeissFind albums by this artist, Joe NayFind albums by this artist and Evert FratermanFind albums by this artist.

Despite the fact that this music was never intended for commercial release and were not available to Jazz / Fusion fans at the time, it is a remarkable collection of excellent compositions, all superbly executed by Kriegel and his ensembles. The tracks are on average under three minutes in duration and the performances obviously do not feature extensive soloing, but the compositions are all first rate and Kriegel’s guitar artistry is documented here at its peak.

Overall, this is wonderful European Fusion album, performed by top German Jazz musicians active in the 1970s / 1980s, as well as an important addition to the recorded legacy by Kriegel, which is carefully curated by his archive, which hopefully will be released in its entirety in time. For guitar lovers and European Fusion enthusiasts this is an absolute must!

VOLKER KRIEGEL ~ MILD MANIAC
MOOSICUS 1310 (Barcode: 885513131027) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1977 Released: 2019

This is a reissue of the fifth album by the legendary German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, originally released on the MPSFind albums on this label label in 1974 (it was Kriegel’s fourth album for the label). The album was recorded by a quartet called SpectrumFind albums by this artist, same as the title of Kriegel’s debut album for MPS, which also included keyboardist Rainer BruninghausFind albums by this artist, bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and drummer Joe NayFind albums by this artist, with percussionist Peter GigerFind albums by this artist appearing as a guest. The album presents six original compositions, five by Kriegel and one co-composed by the quartet members. This new remastered edition adds five bonus tracks recorded three years later (1977), all recorded live. One is a TV appearance and the rest are from a concert performance by the Mild Maniac OrchestraFind albums by this artist, Kriegel’s group active at that time.

The music is a superb example both of Kriegel’s unique genius as a player and composer and the European Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was developing rapidly at the time, on both sides of the Iron Curtain, with Germany as one of its focal points. Kriegel found ideal partners in this wonderful team of German musicians, although his ensembles over the years included often multinational collaborations.

The compositions are quite complex and multilayered, requiring very attentive listening in order to be fully appreciated. Kriegel switches between acoustic and electric guitars with ease and elegance, as expected from a true Master and his idiosyncratic stylistic is immediately recognizable to those familiar with his recordings. There is an aura of playfulness and mystique in this music, which makes it completely distinctive from everything that was being done at the time.

Kriegel’s tragically premature death in 2003 put an end to his wonderful career as musician and later author and illustrator, but his archives hold some incredible unreleased treasures, like the bonus material on this album (which was previously released on LP), which is being released on the MoosicusFind albums on this label label, which brings great joy of his many followers.

Overall this is a superb piece of music, which deserves to be remembered and is an immensely important document of the European Jazz-Rock Fusion legacy, which of course deserves an honorable place in any serious record collection. A must!

They perform four original compositions, two each by Kriegel and Bettermann.

Kriegel, who sadly departed way too prematurely in 2003, was one of the most original Jazz / Fusion guitarists on the world scale and one of the most important German Jazz musicians. His albums, most of which were released on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, are all absolute gems and reflect splendidly the development of the local scene. His ensembles always included top German musicians and his compositions were ideal vehicles for the musicians to play their hearts out. His completely unique guitar style remains as one of the unparalleled highlights of European Fusion.

This album is one of four releases (so far) of material from Kriegel’s personal archives by the MoosicusFind albums on this label label, which are great historical documents and all offer wonderful musical experiences.

HR BIG BAND ~ KRIEGEL TODAY!
MOOSICUS 1313 (Barcode: 885513131324) ~ GERMANY ~ Big Band Jazz

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2020

This is a live album by the German HR Big BandFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Frankfurt Radio Big BandFind albums by this artist), conducted by American pianist / composer / arranger Jim McNeelyFind albums by this artist. The album is a tribute to the great German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, one of the key figures of the modern German Jazz, who died in 2003. Three guitarist were invited to play the solo parts with the orchestra: German John SchroderFind albums by this artist, Dutch Jesse van RullerFind albums by this artist and British / German Martin ScalesFind albums by this artist. They perform eight compositions by Kriegel, arranged for the Big Band by McNeely.

The HR Big Band is one of several German Big Bands, such as the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist (from Hamburg) or the WDR Big BandFind albums by this artist (from Cologne), which function side by side with the regional state broadcasting corporations active in Germany, being decentralized by law and remaining as one of the last bastions of independent publicly sponsored cultural organizations, adding a tremendous input into European Jazz in particular and European Culture in general. The musicians employed by these Big Bands have ideal working conditions and are free from economic struggles, which take a heavy toll on most freelance musicians. Also many projects, like the one documented on this album, would have never happened in a purely unsponsored commercial environment and the existence of these bands is simply a cultural miracle.

The music is absolutely sensational, and this new presentation emphasizes what a genius composer Kriegel was and how eternal his music is. The material was originally recorded for four albums by Kriegel: “SpectrumFind albums with this title” (1971), “Inside: Missing LinkFind albums with this title” (1972), “Lift!Find albums with this title” (1973) and “Mild ManiacFind albums with this title” (1974), all released originally on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label Records label. The fact that the music originates from over four decades earlier, makes one wonder if we are making any progress at all these days?

These Big Band arrangements of the original music, which was pioneering Fusion at the time, is an absolute masterpiece, since in most cases when Big Bands attempt to play Fusion, they botch it up completely, but on this album the music works out perfectly, against all odds. Guitar fanatics can expect a major feast with three great Artists playing their hearts out!

Overall, this is a true gem, which deserves to be heard by all Jazz (and genuine Fusion) enthusiasts, Jazz Big Band lovers and just music lovers in general, as it is accessible to a wide spectrum of listeners. The level of musicianship is absolutely stunning and the music is magical and even if you never heard about Volker Kriegel earlier on, which is a shame of course, make amendments now!

AIRTO MOREIRA & FLORA PURIM ~ LIVE AT JAZZFEST BREMEN 1988
MOOSICUS 1314 (Barcode: 885513131423) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1988 Released: 2021

This is an archival album by Brazilian drummer / composer / bandleader Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist and his wife, singer / songwriter Flora PurimFind albums by this artist, recorded live with their quintet, which also included keyboardist Marcos SilvaFind albums by this artist, American saxophonist Gary MeekFind albums by this artist and bassist Robert HarrisonFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten tracks, eight of which are original compositions / songs by the quintet members and two are Brazilian standards.

Airto and Flora (separately and together) were for many years the most important representatives of Brazilian music outside of their native country and contributed immensely to the creation of the Brazilian-flavored Jazz-World Fusion, recording dozens of dazzling albums in that genre, with many of the world’s best Jazz musicians.

Airto is a brilliant drummer and percussionist and Flora is a breathtaking singer and both have been among my favorite musicians since many decades. I have had the pleasure to meet them many times of course. Therefore, any archival material released with their music is always a great joy.

This live recording catches them with an exceptionally tight quintet, which plays like clockwork, and enables everybody to show their best. Flora’s vocals are brilliant as always and the band offers great saxophone and keyboards parts and a brilliant rhythm section work, including a lengthy showcase of Airto’s solo performance.

Overall, this is a wonderful time capsule, which preserves the spirit of Brazilian Jazz-World Fusion at its best, and as such is absolutely worth being released now, despite the fact then the sound quality is somewhat muddy at times. A superb reminder of the great talent of this Royal Jazz Couple.
