This is the 6th studio album by British Rock keyboardist Don AireyFind albums by this artist, primarily known as a member of the iconic Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, where he replaced Jon LordFind albums by this artist in 2001. The album was recorded with vocalist Carl SentanceFind albums by this artist, guitarist Simon McBrideFind albums by this artist, bassist Laurence CottleFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon FinniganFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven tracks, ten songs and one instrumental, all originals co-written by Airey, Sentance and McBride. This Extended Edition includes a second CD with live material recorded by the same band in Hamburg, not including any of the songs from the studio album.
Not surprisingly, the album sounds quite similar to Deep Purple, a mixture of Classic Rock and melodic Hard Rock, brilliantly performed by all these seasoned instrumentalists and with superb vocals by Sentence. All the songs on the album are just perfect for this kind of music, and although they sound as if originating some fifty years earlier, this is exactly what some of us like to hear occasionally.
Airey plays some brilliant keyboard parts as does McBride, again in perfect tradition of the 1970s, and these musicians know exactly what they are doing, note after note. If someone likes the music of Deep Purple, it is simply impossible not to like this stuff. And of course they are every bit as good live as they are in the studio!
Overall, this is a perfect extension of the music of Deep Purple, and for the many fans the band still has around the world, this is exactly what the doctor prescribed. Excellent musicianship and vocals make this a true delight from start to finish. A taste of grandmother’s cake? Who cares, if you were born at the right period, you know what I mean…

This is the debut album by the British Jazz duo, comprising of trumpeter / composer Tom ArthursFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Richard FairhurstFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, five of which are original compositions by Arthurs, two by Fairhurst, one is co-composed by the two and finally one is by German saxophonist / composer Lothar OhlmeierFind albums by this artist.
This intimate and absolutely beautiful album is one of several recordings involving these two brilliant musicians, which are all exemplary. Both are among my favorite cotemporary British Jazz musicians and excellent composers, who manage to continue the legacy of the previous generation, which established the British Jazz sound in the 1960s and 1970s. Arthurs proudly carries on the sonic tradition of Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Fairhurst that of John TaylorFind albums by this artist, and as such they simply can’t go wrong as far as my ears are concerned.
The difficult and unconventional piano / trumpet duo works absolutely perfectly here, despite the complexity, both harmonic and rhythmic, of the music, which can be also heard on their second duo album “Postcards From PushkinFind albums with this title” and their trio album “One YearFind albums with this title”, which are also absolutely delightful. They have both recorded extensively with many European Jazz musicians.
It took me a while to find a copy of this album, which is a great example of the “Art of the Duo”. I think it is still available, so my warm recommendation is to grab one ASAP, as you simply can’t go wrong with these two young pillars of the British Jazz scene, especially if you haven’t heard anything by them so far. Once you hear it, you will be hooked, I promise!

This is the second album by splendid British Jazz duo comprising of trumpeter / composer Tom ArthursFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Richard FairhurstFind albums by this artist, which presents an ambitious Jazz & Poetry project of compositions based on poems by the Russian literary genius Alexander PushkinFind albums by this artist. Commissioned and recorded by the BBC, the music was composed by Arthurs, but includes obvious improvised stretches. Of the seven pieces included on the album, one is a trumpet solo and the remaining ones are duo performances based on six fragments of Pushkin´s poems.
Since his arrival on the scene Arthurs rapidly achieved a reputation of a brilliant player and composer, backed up by a series of impressive recordings, of which this one is only a tip of an iceberg. His tonality and phrasing often display a fond memory of the work by Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, but having said that, he certainly has his very own voice. Arthurs seems to feel perfectly comfortable in any Jazz idiom, both the restrained melodic context and a completely improvised setting, which of course makes him one of the most versatile trumpet / flugelhorn players out there.
These intimate duets are wonderful examples of Jazz minimalism, where less is more every inch of the way. Both musicians obviously share a telepathic communication, which only happens amongst the best out there. The composed melodies and the improvised parts flow completely naturally and merge the two instruments into one voice. The wonderful natural ambience of the St. Giles Cripplegate church (located in the heart of the Barbican, London) adds its beauty to the tones made by the musicians, creating an unforgettable overall result.
Of course music like this requires the listener to immerse himself totally within the sound waves; nothing less will do. But the resulting aesthetic reward is sure to follow suit, fulfilling and overwhelming. Minimalistic environment with a stunning depth is all this is about.
Perhaps not for everyone, but this music should not be missed by any serious music connoisseur, especially by those particularly attached to British Jazz. This album proves beyond any doubt that the British Jazz scene still has a lot to offer, even if the pioneering generation of its Godfathers is slowly disappearing. Young Lions like Arthurs have a heavy responsibility to keep the splendid tradition alive and judging by his achievements he´s certainly up to it.
A beautiful, delicate, sophisticated gem of an album – a must have!

This is a debut album by the AwatairFind albums by this artist Jazz trio consisting of Polish saxophonist Tomasz GadeckiFind albums by this artist, Ukrainian bassist Mark TokarFind albums by this artist and Polish drummer Michal GosFind albums by this artist. The album, recorded live, presents four tracks, three of which are compositions by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and one is an original improvisation credited to the trio members.
For most Jazz listeners the late John Coltrane period, when his music moved into "interstellar space", remains well beyond their grasp to this very day, over half a century later. Coltrane´s visionary approach to music in general, and his output closely preceding his untimely death is even more unapproachable to musicians, trying to produce anything similar to his unearthly accomplishments.
In view of the above this album is threading a thin line between homage and a self parody, which characterizes most similar projects. Gadecki, who undoubtedly is one of the most interesting Jazz personalities on the Polish Jazz scene, has a fabulous record of creating some of the most ambitious and consistently excellent Polish Free Jazz projects, takes a great risk here, and I am relieved to say that he and his colleagues manage to produce a homage rather than a pastiche.
Gadecki´s playing on this album is nothing short of phenomenal. He is able to produce a range of sounds from his instruments, which can be surprising even to veterans of the genre. His explorations are diverse, original and heartfelt all the way and his technique and stamina are extraordinary. He is amicably supported by the rhythm section, which is supportive and sensitive, but less impressive.
Overall this is a fascinating listening experience, which manages to keep the listener on his toes for the entire duration. Having said all that I still think Coltrane and his late period music is a holy grail that should rather be left alone as a symbol of human Genius.

In retrospect the album is visionary and educational, allowing a glimpse at a time when musical dreams were realized. This pioneering effort is a wonderful legacy for generations to come and includes many unforgettable moments. Unavailable for decades, this CD reissue is a wonderful opportunity to get familiar with a piece of musical legacy, which remains untouched by time. Absolutely not to be missed!

This live recording is one of several releases based on the private archives of legendary drummer Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist, which finally see the light of day. Although not intended for a formal release and suffering from "bootleg" sound quality problems, the musical importance of this material is so significant, that it overshadows any technicalities and is essentially a Godsend. This album brings a live recording of Baker´s revolutionary Jazz-World Fusion ensemble Air ForceFind albums by this artist, which he founded following the demise of CreamFind albums by this artist. Air Force recorded only two albums during its short life-span, and any additional material by the band is invaluable. Baker assembled a formidable group of top British Jazz players of the period, augmented by African vocalists and drummers. The fact that this album features the talents of the legendary saxophonist / organist Graham BondFind albums by this artist is alone worth the price, but other great players are also present: organist / guitarist Ken CraddockFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Steve GregoryFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Bud BeadleFind albums by this artist, bassist Colin GibsonFind albums by this artist and others. The material is similar to the material present on the two Air Force albums, but several surprises are heard here for the first time, like the group´s version of Cream´s "Sunshine Of Your Love". Most of the pieces include extended improvised parts, with the saxophonist taking solos in tandem. Definitely worth investigating, provided you´re not squeamish about sound quality.

This is the debut album by Polish ensemble Bunch Of Chairs OrchestraFind albums by this artist, which is basically a core string quartet comprising of violinists Malgorzata MuszynskaFind albums by this artist and Nelly GutowskaFind albums by this artist, violist Justyna JaniszewskaFind albums by this artist and cellist Malgorzata MasluszczakFind albums by this artist, and eight additional instrumentalists playing on selected tracks. The album presents eleven tracks, all original compositions, six by Masluszczak, four by Janiszewska and one by Neil FornalikFind albums by this artist, who is the ensemble’s guitarist and primary soloist.
The music is a set of melodic themes, tastefully arranged for the ensemble, offering a wide stylistic range with a strong Jazz atmosphere on the very entertaining side of the genre. It could be as well considered background cinematic music and for a lack of a better definition I’d put it under the Smooth Jazz label, without any intention to undermine its aesthetic value. The compositions are all coherent and pleasant, the arrangements intelligent and the performances excellent, and I am sure many listeners might enjoy this music without any reservations.
Overall, although not my cup of tea exactly, this is a tight, elegant production of entertaining music, which listeners from the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum might enjoy, without destroying their grey cells.

The addition of vocalist Sonja KristinaFind albums by this artist, a remarkable singer with a unique voice, turned Curved Air into an outstanding creative musical unit. This album is considered to this very day one of the strongest debut Prog releases ever and the instrumental "Vivaldi With Cannons" turned into a Prog anthem. The original album was the first ever vinyl picture disk. A true Prog classic.

It presents eight original songs, written by Gregory, Jobson, Wedgwood and also Kristina, who wrote the lyrics to two songs written by others. The music offered a unique amalgamation of British Folk, Classical Music, Electronic Music, Rock and Jazz influences, unmatched by any of their contemporaries and despite the departure of the two songwriters responsible for the majority of the material present on the first three classic albums, the material this album offers is on a par with its predecessors. Sadly this lineup proved to be short lived and disbanded shortly after the album was released in the summer of 1973.
In 1974 Curved Air reunited and recorded one live album called simply "LiveFind albums with this title", which featured the original lineup except for the bassist and a year later Kristina and Way managed to put another lineup together and recorded two more albums: "Midnight WireFind albums with this title" (1975) and "AirborneFind albums with this title" (1976) before disbanding for many years to come.
Sonja Kristina remains to this very day one of the most distinctive Rock vocalists. She managed to maintain a steady, although less glamorous career over the years, producing a substantial volume of excellent music. She also fronts the reformed edition of Curved Air.
Overall this is one of the essential British Classic Rock / Prog albums, which lost absolutely nothing of its strength over time and still sounds fresh and moving today. When originally released in 1972, the album established Curved Air as one of the most important and innovative British Prog groups at the time and proved that the band was constantly evolving and exploring new territory. This album used some of the most advanced and complex electronic music elements thanks to Monkman´s interest in the subject. Of the triptych created by the first three albums this one is by far the most coherent and perfectly put together one.
Sadly, just a few months after this album was released the three founding members of the group: Way, Monkman and Pilkington-Miksa decided to leave the group and go their separate ways. Kristina and Wedgwood carried the group´s name into the future, and the band would go into several reunion project in the years that followed.

It embodies the Zeuhl spirit, presenting music which combines elements of modern European Classical music, Rock and Jazzy improvisations. The band often played at the same venues as MagmaFind albums by this artist of course. The great instrumental work and the vocalese female vocals are, as usual, quite irresistible. This is also one of the rarest albums around, with the original vinyl only pressed in 300 copies and now being and ultra-rare collector´s item. This new edition adds a great bonus track, but most importantly brings to life one of the greatest European Prog gems. Absolutely essential for every Zeuhl fan!

The music is splendidly recorded and offers a true feast to Jazz piano lovers.
Separated by a generation age gap, Fairhurst (born 1975) and Taylor (born 1942) are able to bridge that gap without a hitch, playing in perfect harmony both technically and spiritually. Their treatment of the Evans compositions is absolutely breathtaking and manages to preserve the delicate climate and lyricism of the original compositions and yet transform them to a more European Jazz sensitivity. But the entire selection of tunes is brilliant from start to finish and a true delight to Jazz connoisseurs, who might try and guess who plays what, which for a trained ear is not that difficult.
The idea of this project was born when Fairhurst was invited to take part in the Steinway Two Pianos Festival in London in 2010 and asked John to join him, and continued when John asked Richard to take part in his 70th Birthday Celebration concert in 2012, which allowed them to collect enough material suitable for a recording session, which resulted in this album. Sadly less than two years after this album was recorded John departed prematurely and the album was released posthumously.
Overall this is a classic example of Jazz piano duet performance and the "Art of the Duo" idiom and a beautiful memento of John´s artistry. For the many followers of Taylor´s music this is an absolute must of course, but Fairhurst is also to be complimented on his brilliant playing, which is definitely worthy of being closely followed! A true gem!

The music is an absolutely stunning example of Nordic Jazz, with a slight touch of Fusion, due to the utilization of electric bass and keyboards. The music is strongly melody based, with the omnipresent Nordic melancholy and introspection, but ventures into open, more freely improvised explorations on the instrumental tracks. Winstone fits wonderfully to this musical environment both as a vocalist and a lyricist, and the cooperation is perfectly organic and as a result also extremely effective. Her vocal and improvised vocalese are absolutely top notch.
The instrumental pieces provide an opportunity to the quartet members to explore more adventurous direction, but overall the entire album is beautifully coherent and definitely offers a clearly defined musical aesthetics. It is interesting to hear this music in retrospect, especially in view of the later career of the members of the group, including ECMFind albums on this label recordings.
Overall this is a lost treasure and an absolute gem for all Winstone fans, British and Scandinavian Jazz enthusiasts and all people with ears in their heads. Not easy to find but worth the effort – absolutely stunning stuff!

In retrospect the album sounds a bit naïve today, but all things considered it still is a great piece of music and a wonderful document of the times, definitely worth revisiting.

Overall, this is an excellent time capsule of the British Folk-Rock movement, which ruled the British Isles music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s, to be later largely forgotten. Any previously unreleased material by Fairport Convention is always a pleasant surprise, so just grab a copy!

In retrospect this is a classic album of the British Folk-Rock legacy and with the added value of Sandy Danny´s presence an extraordinary piece of music history, worthy of an honorable place in any serious record collection.

The music is a nice and easy version of Smooth Jazz, with great melodies and perfect execution, copying the American model note by note and trick by trick. Mya has a soulful voice and Huber sings / raps no less soulfully and the rest of the band members are all excellent professionals.
Although not really my cup of tea, one has to admit that this album ticks like Swiss clockwork and pulls all the right strings on the emotional scale, and if one has to listen to this kind of music, this is something I can wholehearted recommend. At least it has melody, harmony and musical sense in comparison to what passes as music these days.
In short if you like Soul / Pop / Jazz music with lush melodies, this is something you should not miss!

The group is evidently not trying neither to copy the original Prog sound and attitude, nor the New Prog derivative attempts, and wants to make their own stand, which of course is commendable.
This album marks further change in the group´s sound, which is again mellowed, the Heavy elements appearing only occasionally and the vocals become audible, although still purposely distorted. The melodic content also becomes much clearer and more elaborate.
The fact that Kairon; IRSE! manage to re-invent their music time after time speaks volumes about their ambitious approach to music and a constant need to progress, which after all is the essence of Prog, and basically all music. The music does get a bit loud at times, and the volume knob is there to solve the problem, if it ever arises.
Overall this is obviously worth checking out, especially for the brave-hearted Prog followers, who are ready to try something new and unexpected.– again well done!

The group manages to create a completely unique "wall of sound" effect, which combines Heavy Rock / Psychedelia / Ambient influences and emerges as one of the most interesting discoveries of the 2010s Prog. The group´s originality escapes the accepted stylistic labeling, although the "shoegaze" idiom is commonly used to describe their music, which I personally find quite ridiculous. The group is evidently not trying neither to copy the original Prog sound and attitude, nor the New Prog derivative attempts, and wants to make their own stand, which of course is commendable.
The music is based on melodic background, which only rarely comes to the surface of the music due to the intense racket the guitars produce, but sharp-eared listeners won´t miss. Strangely, the massive attack of sound is not aggressive and can be easily solved by turning the volume knob slightly counterclockwise, to reveal the diverse sound layers hiding behind it. The vocals are hardly audible and become a part of the overall sound, which work fine for me.
Overall this is obviously worth checking out, especially for the brave-hearted Prog followers, who are ready to try something new and unexpected. The group released two more albums after this one, so there is obviously a consistency and continuity here – well done!

This is a criminally overdue reissue of the two albums recorded by the British Jazz flautist / saxophonist / composer Harold McNairFind albums by this artist for the RCAFind albums by this artist label, which have been unavailable for over forty years now. McNair, born in Jamaica, was one of many brilliant West Indian musicians to arrive on the British scene in the 1950s and 1960, greatly contributing to the creation of the modern British Jazz, which was at its peak when these two albums were recorded. Although McNair played the saxophone superbly, his flute playing was absolutely amazing and extraordinary, making him probably the best ever British Jazz flautist. He died from cancer in 1971 at a ridiculous young age of thirty nine, a tremendous loss of an amazing talent, lamented to this very day by those who knew him and his work. His rather limited recorded legacy is now radically expanded with the reissue of these two albums.
The eponymous album was recorded by the Harold McNair quartet, with pianist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist, bassist Spike HeatleyFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony CarrFind albums by this artist. They perform nine pieces, five of which are originals composed by McNair, three are standards and one is a song written by the Folk-Rock singer / songwriter DonovanFind albums by this artist. McNair´s performances on this album are perfect from start to finish. He uses the flute on most of the tracks and his immediately recognizable style is simply overwhelming.
The "Flute & NutFind albums with this title" album features McNair accompanied by a Jazz Orchestra conducted by John Cameron, performing eight pieces orchestrated and arranged by Cameron, three of which are McNair originals, one a Cameron original and the remaining four are standards. In retrospect this is the best album McNair ever recorded, with his flute (and occasional saxophone) sounding absolutely marvelous and the beautiful arrangements adding a spectacular effect to the entire production.
McNair recorded only one more album as a leader after this, called "The FenceFind albums with this title", before he died, which was released on the B&CFind albums on this label label. Parts of the first album included here were released posthumously by the same label as another eponymous album, and included also live material recorded at the Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist´s club.
Beautifully remastered by Michael J. DuttonFind albums by this artist, these two albums sound fresh and wonderful, as if recorded only a short while ago. Musically they are some of the best Jazz flute music even captured and are an essential piece of the modern British Jazz legacy. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

A brilliant instrumentalist he was one of the busiest studio musicians and took part in countless recording sessions, including those by famous Rock acts. He was a permanent member of DonovanFind albums by this artist’s group and recorded many albums with him. Of course he was also active on the Jazz scene, both as a leader and sideman. He recorded several albums, of which this is the last released while he was still alive, shortly before his life was tragically cut short by lung cancer at a ridiculously young age. His last eponymous album was released posthumously. This album is distinctly on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, but nonetheless offers great musicianship and the familiar Brazilian flavor, which is always great fun to listen to. The last track, which features Pastorius, is particularly interesting to his many fans, as his playing here is absolutely stunning.
Overall, fans of Jazz-World Fusion with Brazilian flavoring should love this album, as all his other recordings, and of course he is an absolute genius as far as mixing the Brazilian elements with Jazz is concerned.

Airto and Flora (separately and together) were for many years the most important representatives of Brazilian music outside of their native country and contributed immensely to the creation of the Brazilian-flavored Jazz-World Fusion, recording dozens of dazzling albums in that genre, with many of the world’s best Jazz musicians.
Airto is a brilliant drummer and percussionist and Flora is a breathtaking singer and both have been among my favorite musicians since many decades. I have had the pleasure to meet them many times of course. Therefore, any archival material released with their music is always a great joy.
This live recording catches them with an exceptionally tight quintet, which plays like clockwork, and enables everybody to show their best. Flora’s vocals are brilliant as always and the band offers great saxophone and keyboards parts and a brilliant rhythm section work, including a lengthy showcase of Airto’s solo performance.
Overall, this is a wonderful time capsule, which preserves the spirit of Brazilian Jazz-World Fusion at its best, and as such is absolutely worth being released now, despite the fact then the sound quality is somewhat muddy at times. A superb reminder of the great talent of this Royal Jazz Couple.

With four Brazilian musicians on board, the music offers a brilliant Jazz-World Fusion tribute to Brazilian sources. Two of the tracks are trio performances, four others are full quintet performances with Purim on vocals and one is a solo piece by Airto.
Alves proves to be a brilliant pianist, truly shining in the over twenty minutes long rendition of “La Fiesta”, but his performances on all the tracks is nothing short of phenomenal. Another RTF piece “Light As A Feather” also gets a fourteen minutes’ treatment, which causes goosebumps to appear on every listener’s skin, probably even in case of deaf persons.
Although Airto and Flora recorded several live albums together, this is undoubtedly their absolute best, in every respect – the exceptional material, brilliant performances and sublime sound just all fall together perfectly.
Overall, this is a surprising reminder of how great Airto / Flora and their cohorts sounded live, which of course I have experienced in person many times, but never heard on records in such glorious manifestation. For the couple’s many fans, this is an absolute must have, a sublime mixture of Jazz and Brazilian music, which sound still absolutely gorgeous, now thirty-three years later.

Overall, fans of Jazz-World Fusion with Brazilian flavoring should love this album, as all other recordings by Moreira, Purim and Farrell, together and separately. The Brazilian pair are absolute geniuses as far as mixing the Brazilian elements with Jazz is concerned.

Threadgill needs no introduction to any serious Jazz connoisseur; suffice to say that from the early days in his hometown of Chicago with the AACM members and later with the many incarnations of his AirFind albums by this artist ensemble he established for himself a position of one of the most iconoclastic musicians and outstanding composers around. His virtuosic playing and excellent compositions are always a source of great musical joy. The Italian independent record label Black SaintFind albums on this label was founded by the music critic / author / producer Giacomo PellicciottiFind albums by this artist in 1975. It was taken over by the producer Giovanni BonandriniFind albums by this artist in 1978 and a year later (1979) a sister label, called Soul NoteFind albums on this label, was established. The twin labels were run by Giovanni and later his son Flavio BonandriniFind albums by this artist, until they were sold in 2008 to the Italian KEPACH Music Group, which already owned the CAM JazzFind albums on this label label, and which also bought another Italian independent record label Dischi Della QuerciaFind albums on this label.
The mission of the Black Saint / Soul Note labels was to record and document the Free Jazz / Improvised Music / Avant-Garde scene, mostly from the US but also from Europe, which continued between mid 1970s and late 1990s and produced a staggering collection of almost 550 albums recorded by world's most important Jazz innovators active at the time, providing an opportunity to American (mostly Afro-American) musicians, who would have never managed to make these recordings at home, ridden by racism, alienation and closed-mindedness. Without these two labels most of this fantastic human creativity would have been never documented.
However, the Black Saint / Soul Note Box Sets produced under the CAM JazzFind albums on this label moniker are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard to the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires us to treat our cultural legacy with respect and loyalty.
These Box Sets have no booklet which presents researched historical background and exact discographical information of the albums included, and most importantly an overview of the music and its meaning and contribution to the Jazz Art form. Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, the information is in most cases too small to be readable at all. In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap!

This instrumental album by Israeli guitarist / composer Yair YonaFind albums by this artist is extremely difficult to categorize, as it is truly cross-genre. Yair´s composition move freely between Folk, Country and contemporary Classical music, but they are all beautifully melancholic and full of interesting melody lines. A host of guest musicians help along, mostly playing string instruments, which are used both in the background and as in full-fledged string arrangements. Yair plays a plethora of acoustic guitars; 6 and 12 strings, slide, bass and others. The overall effect is quite effective and certainly worth listening to. Recommended to connoisseurs of more eclectic and demanding music, which requites attentive listening.
